The Cincinnati and Miami games are scary right now--we could get blown out in each, Both of those teams are playing exceedingly well and are definitely prime time opponents. Not sure we are ready for prime time just yet. We have a chance in each of the rest of the games. So, I'm saying 3-3.

Like it or not, Tim Miles continues to insist that big body Borchardt will be needed--and used--on occasion this season. -

Granted, some negative things can be said about Glynn's game. But last night's performance isn't one of them. The little defender against Glynn last night is Benny Parker-esque. That defender applies incredible on-ball pressure. Yet, despite the pressure, Glynn produced last night 14 points, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 4 rebounds (all defensive), 2 of 2 from three, 5 of 11 from the field, 2 of 3 free throws and 2 fouls, all in 22 minutes. Like all the scholarship freshmen, Glynn is improving rapidly, and every game is a learning and growing experience. These are exciting times! -

Ed just now called for a foul without moving at all, Scheesh. -
Parkview Christian seems to get some pretty good coaches. Their football coaches have been Scott Frost's parents. Also, a couple years ago Parkview had some pretty good foreign basketball players that were not allowed to play by the NSAA or some other governing authority--eligibility reasons, I believe.

Watson played only 15 minutes last night because of foul trouble. Ed Morrow played 17 minutes before fouling out. The one truly disappointing fact from last night's game is that both Watson and Morrow saw foul-limited minutes. Those two, along with McVeigh, need to be getting big minutes in early games to force their learning trajectory steeply upward.

This Rothstein tweet, retweeted by HHC, explains why Benny and Tai are starting and will continue to play major minutes during the early portions of this season:
-
Max Bielfeldt's line: 1-5 from the floor, 0-1 from three, 3 rebounds (2 off., 1 def.), 3 fouls, and no free throws, assists, blocks, turnovers or steals in 16 minutes of play.

Dimes said above: "Minor Trap game alert - They're going to throw zone, some press, and a slower pace at us. This is one of those games where if you're not careful all of a sudden it's a game with 8 minutes to go." Prophetic!

Hooper says this above: "Glynn Watson grew up just a little bit tonight." This observation applies to all the freshmen and is, in my judgement, the key observation and reasons for high expectations for the future of this season and these young players. What I saw last night during the final eight minutes is an athletic and confident and proficient Watson at the point (let's give him some shot-tutorial time with Norm to imorove the arc), a high IQ McVeigh, and a wonderful talent in White. And that's from first-time guys in a hostile environment. Especially from Watson, I saw great improvement over this season's games already and prospects for better-than -advertised results in the future. -

I saw only the last 8 minutes or so. During that time: Watson was impressive--can create his shot at any time, and he shot a high % toward the end McVeigh was impressive White was impressive--actually, very impressive as a scorer Don't like seeing travels by Tai when he starts a dash for the basket before starting to dribble--if, over the years, he made those drives, instead of turning it over, we'd have won a few more games Shavon frequently took the ball inside but rarely tried to finish--what's with that? Didn't get to see much of Morrow--foul trouble Looked like their defense packed it in, and we turned it over a lot -
Last 12 minutes: Walk-ons and freshmen

One theory: he takes the minutes of whoever is in foul trouble. Based on what happened in the exhibition game, he might get a lot of those minutes. -
Last 12 minutes: Walk-ons and freshmen
Swan88 replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
My recollection from reading the NCAA Bylaws on this subject a year or two ago is that Tanner can keep his Regents Scholarship, even if he plays this year, without it counting against the 13 scholarship limit because: 1. He achieved that Scholarship without regard to athletics in any respect--he came to the University as a regular student on an academic scholarship and did not join the team until tryouts occurred well into the academic year; but 2. Had he come to the University as a preferred walk on, then his Regents Scholarship would probably have counted toward the 13 limit as soon as he steps on the floor--the real issue, I believe, is whether the awarding of the scholarship has anything to do with athletics, which the Regents Scholarship does not. -

So, here is a technical question we've all batted around before: Since Tanner Borchardt is attending the University on a Regents Scholarship (must be plenty smart to achieve that scholarship), which he obviously achieved without regard to athletics, and since he will be logging minutes on the court this year, does his Regents Scholarship count against Nebrasketball's 13 scholarship limit? -

Morrow's fifth foul came while setting a screen. He absolutely decked the poor defender from the other team. Have you seen the replay of when Kenny Bell clocked a football defender with a block--and drew a flag for unnecessary roughness? Well . . . Morrow's last foul is a basketball version of that play. -

Bakari does seem like a redshirt candidate. However, I thought he looked good running the point at the end of the game. Several times he drove the ball into the lane from the wing, looking to kick the ball out to an open man, but then (in the blink of an eye) he put the ball in the hoop while defenders were looking to stop the kick-out pass: very clever ball handling. -

Here's a theory: the first session includes the Nebraska starter types, while the second session excludes the upper class starter types. Consider this published information: First session: --Huskers won 89-67 --Shavon had 19 points, Andrew had 16, Ed had 14, Watson had 13 --Huskers had 23 assists, of which Benny had 7 --Wyoming shot 39% --Husker won the rebounding war by 52-35 Second Session --Huskers end up "edging" Wyoming on the scoreboard --Glenn Watson led Nebrasketball's scorers with 20 points --Nick fuller played --Bakari Evelyn played --Wyoming's Josh Adams scored 22 points --Huskers shot 50% from the floor and 40% from three --no mention of Shavon, Andrew or Benny Both Sessions Combined --Huskers shot 40% from three

I say we are "there" now. Here's why (based in part on what we saw last night): 1. In today's shorter-clock era, we have at least three players who can create their own shot and score at a high percentage: Shavon is Shavon + another year of maturity; Andrew, with length and quickness, can either create a three or drive to the middle with a step back jumper at any time; and Glenn can create a shot from the point whenever needed (that floater from his baseline drive last night was a thing of beauty). And Andrew is an offense step-up from Terran, with a higher percentage-in-a-pinch scoring. 2. As Norm explains elsewhere, we have high level talent in the house right now, and we have more high level talent committed for next year--and the next. Highly rated talent can always bomb, but it's nice to have those guys, instead of hoping that our under-the-radar discoveries are truly under-rated. They are high-character and high-inteligence guys as well. 3. With all the angst over no-quality-bigs and only a few guys over some arbitrary height (e.g., 6'8"), I'd suggest that Ed is the proto-type Tim Miles big: whatever he lacks in without-shoes height, he makes up for in explosiveness, athleticism, bulk and grit. 4. This team will take time to grow. But the elements for being "there" are already "here." Edit: Oops. Fixed it. Thanks MandR [or you could have just let it pass and no one would have been the wiser and spared me the grief of admitting an error and trying to fix it]. Much appreciated.
