Arguments like that put Collier and Doc in serious doo-doo with the Omaha blue crowd of that day. I mean, like seriously vicious recrimination stuff. I remember being shocked over such things at the time.

The two Division 1 teams in Omaha don't play each other? What's the story on that? Looks like the Mavs will be traveling to such nearby places as Boulder, Minneapolis, Bozeman, Phoenix and Laramie. As a taxpayer in this state . . .

Gotta Ask! Any News on Basketball Practices?
Swan88 replied to Red Don's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yeah, it's sorta like Kansas and Wichita State. All fans of both teams root for and love the other team. Oh wait . . . -
Here is a report from a Kansas State message board poster on Jeriah Horne: Saw Horne play in 2 and a half games on Saturday . . . it is very tough to categorize him as he is a versatile and multi-skilled player, I think that will serve him very well at the high major level. I do believe the 6'6" 220 measurements for him are accurate. When operating on the block he knocked down a few nice jump hooks out to about 7 ft and finished a couple reverse layups in heavy traffic. He does have a good faceup jumper and I saw him hit 3 3's on the day and when a defender crowds him on the perimeter (usually a big), he does have the ability to put the ball on the floor, get to the rim and finish. He's also got a nice feel and court vision for passing the ball, he plays unselfishly and looks for open teammates. He did try to force a few passes that just weren't there or he was a little off target, but overall, his good passing ability is an aspect of his game that I was glad to see. He is not a tremendously quick or explosive athlete, but when matched with opposing 4s and 5s (this is primarily what I saw him guard) he does a good of anticipating passes and getting into the passing lane, resulting in multiple deflections and steals. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty or throw his weight around in the paint, but I wouldn't necessarily say physical play is his bread and butter. However, I do have to say that I was very impressed with the way he attacked consensus 4* 6'9" 250 Tyler Cook in the title game. Cook absolutely owned the paint in the semis (34 pts), but Horne took it right at him in the post and got him in foul trouble, which really kept Cook a non-factor in that title game. Run GMC came up a little short against the St Louis Eagles, 60-53, but Horne battled hard, got to the line a lot, and finished with 16 pts.

Phil Beckner named the next assistant coach at Nebraska
Swan88 replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I especially like #59-61. Read them and see if he nailed it. If there has been a constant with regard to our struggles in the Doc/Miles eras, it has been poor shooting. Wow. Now that's an impressive list. This guy knows what he is doing. And he has the right priorities. I can see why Tim Miles and others who know him well are very high on him. -
Phil Beckner named the next assistant coach at Nebraska
Swan88 replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Phil Beckner looks like a high quality coach and a high quality person. Looks like a solid hire. Obviously, this isn't a sexy hire. But then, the last one of those didn't work out so well. He looks like a typical Miles type of guy: smart, hard worker, high character, knows his stuff. Too bad Miles didn't pick this guy several months ago. -
Getting a bit worried about recruiting
Swan88 replied to lanigan123's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Or . . . the Huskers could follow the Iowa approach--lock up two in-state guys like these: --a high school power forward from Spirit Lake without any stars: none from Rivals, none from ESPN, and none from Scout. --a high school small forward from Dubuque with Rivals three stars and 133 ranking, a Scout three stars with no ranking, and no ranking or stars from ESPN. Would that make us feel better? Now, don't get this wrong: I'm sure there were late offers and interest from quality schools before each committed and that each is an excellent prospect. But imagine the consternation on this board and the hee-haws from other-school fans, if that were the case for us: "That's worse than Doc," would be the cry. -
Getting a bit worried about recruiting
Swan88 replied to lanigan123's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
What?! There are only about a hundred of them left?! And, oh wait, we already have one of them committed to us?! And we need two more? Looks like the math is right on track for Husker recruiting. Hey, lets enjoy the journey a bit. Life is full of risk, but it will work out. This worrying for-the-heck-of-it is a drag. -

Getting a bit worried about recruiting
Swan88 replied to lanigan123's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Commits for the 2015 class that occurred in the 2014 calendar year, according to Rivals, are as follows: 7/31/14 Michael Jacobson committed 8/31/14 Glynn Watson committed 9/22/14 Edward Morrow committed By comparison, we have Isaiah Roby already committed. So, this topic string is at least a month or two premature. -

Good for you.

Ok. Good for the Jays. But . . . optimism always abounds in the summertime when every team is still undefeated. That's true for the Jays. It's true for the Huskers. And it's true for everyone else. Yet, I can't imagine the grief Huskers would be receiving if a 2.5 star Composit Rating freshman is our "best defender" and a juco "no one has ever heard of" is probably "the most athletic guy on the team." What about that nearly-five-star seven footer; and what about those sat-out transfer world-beaters? But, hey, that's why they play the game. And that's what keeps us all coming back. And that's what keeps message boards like this humming.

Developments like this are why college basketball is so captivating. It's like our Tarin Smith from last year. Both Smith and Thomas are athletic, and both had recruiting advantages: Smith played on a high-profile high school team, and Thomas had an extra year in prep school. Yet both were under-the-radar: e.g., both committed late in the process, neither had many high-level alternatives, and each held less than a three-star Composit Rating by Verbal Commits (2.7 for Smith and 2.5 for Thomas). Yet both in the summertime received high praise and talk of considerable playing time. Smith fit into a position of great need--but he couldn't produce reliable scoring and transferred to a mid-major school. Who knows what the deal is or will become with Thomas. It will be interesting to see how his situation plays out.

I've been to many of those Omaha summer league games over the years. The players might be the greatest thing ever, but it's difficult to project those intra-mural scrums into high-major competition. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How have the Husker summer league exploits looked by comparison?

You mean Creighton? By the way, Creighton's new logo is a bit . . . hmmm . . . will take some getting used to.

Robin Washut has a premium article on Arlando Cook. Here is a quote from the article, as to whether NU is a legitimate contender for his services: "They actually really are," Cook said. Also, says he won't take official visits or narrow his list of schools until Spring.

Which of those 12 schools shall not be named?

Robin Washut recently posted an in-depth article on Jeriah Horne. It's a premium article and well-worth the price of admission. Here's the last line of the article, a quote from Horne: "I am definitely going to give Nebraska a look."

FAU Sophomore Transfer G Malcolm Laws is N
Swan88 replied to AuroranHusker's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Wow. Wonder what the back-story on this walk-on transfer might be. Is it a Burno connection from before the departure, in light of the player's Orlando home town and Florida Atlantic history? Edit: Oops. Didn't see the two entries above before posting this. -
Lee Barfknecht has an article on Michael Jacobson in today's Omaha World Herald. You'll want to read the entire article. Here are a couple blurbs: Michael credited his father with sparking his basketball interest. “My dad has always been there and taught me basketball and taught me to love the game,” Michael said. “We’ve always played one-on-one, but he’s getting a little old now.” [i'll bet Dad loved that "old" line--not.] Nebraska assistant Kenya Hunter said Jacobson has shown well in early workouts. “Mike has a chance to be pretty good,” Hunter said. “He’s one of our best inside guys in terms of mobility and understanding how to play. I like our team in general. The ball is moving.” [What's the definition of, "The ball is moving"? It sounds good.]
