Nebraska(11-8) vs. Michigan State(13-6) Game Thread
brfrad replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
All in all not a bad half. Tied to MSU, with White only playing 10 minutes due to fouls, and Shields with 13 minutes. I will take it. Nice job by Tai when Shavon and White went out. Extended our streak of 50% shooting halves, shot 51.9% from the field in the first half. The really nice thing is that we only attempted 8 shots from 3. -

Well, now we are at least even on travels Valentine wasn't happy...was it a charge? I think travel, which it clearly was. -

We do belong with this team. Confidence is pretty high. Need to keep playing defense and rebound. Only 1 offensive rebound for MSU so far. -
I did look it up for fun. #3 is impossible. I don't even know if Shamus would know it. 6 is not quite as hard.
-
I'd probably chalk it up to good intent but poor planning. Nonetheless, I'm sure there's going to be a ton of media coverage bringing awareness to the cause during the game and (in Miles' words) "at the end of the day" that's all that matters. It is Coaches Suits and Sneakers Awareness Week.

There's a chance we have success getting to the rim on MSU. Wisky did today and shot 36 free throws and they really aren't too much different than we are I didn't get a chance to watch their game. If we can get to the rim, that would be very helpful. Ted Valentine was one the refs. That probably explains it a bit On the negative side, the refs won't let us shoot 36 free throws in East Lansing.

My understanding it that all we need to get into the NIT is a winning record. They still have to get an at large bid.
-
I have a feeling we are going to need to hit a bunch of outside shots if we want to stay in this game. We are not going to be allowed to penetrate and score at the rim. I say we still try it, but I have a feeling MSU is going to pack the lane, and say if you are going to beat us, you are going to have to shoot the ball from deep. The keys for us are defensively shutting them down, keep them off the offensive glass, and if we get to the rim we have to convert.
-
A lot will depend on the performance of the 1 bid regular season conference champions in their conference tournaments. They receive an automatic bid into the NIT if they don't win their conference tournament. Nebraska is 176 in the RPI. They jumped 20 spots with a road victory against an average Illinois team. Samford is still under 200 in the RPI.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 8, Issue 19 - @ Illinois

We are really loving the rim during this 3 game winning streak. I have looked at the numbers. During our 3 game losing streak, we shot from 3 point range, 38% of the time, and averaged 69.0 points. During our 3 game winning streak, we shot from 3 point range 27.3% of the time, averging 84.0 points. We also have crashed the boards, rebounding 42.7% of our missed shots. We have also been helped by the fact the last 3 teams don't have a formidable inside player (of course, Northwestern didn't either). Now, we come to a huge 4 game stretch, with some talented front courts (outside of Michigan). It would be nice to see us putting it together and win 2 of these games. Tai has improved in almost every category. He is shooting 40.6% from 3 and 81.0% from the free throw line. He still makes bad decisions at times, but has played with great confidence since the Cincinnati game. -

I'm confused!! How are we winning this game, Lee Barfnecht? I didn't think we had any Big 10 talent? Maybe against Samford, we just weren't playing well at that time. This team is showing how good it can be. Need to see how we play against a competent front court. -

That's the 2nd time we got beat after a missed free throw. Can't happen. -

We have to get back on defense. Played a great game so far. Need to finish this final 1:40. -

If you can hold the offensive guy, I could play defense. Illinois completely mugged White on that last play. -

There was far more of a foul by Illinois than Tai trying to block the shot. -

Morrow is going to be a stud on the boards and as a rim protector. Came from out of nowhere on a run out for Illinois. -
Game Day Essentials: Game #19 at Illinois
brfrad replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
We have a great chance if we can hold them to 25 points again. -
I should have mentioned both were on the road. I think coach might have loosened the reigns on the boys after the 1st game.
-
I know comparative scores don't always work out. We gave Iowa a game losing by only 11 on the road. Even had it down to 8 late in the game. They just went into Michigan State and destroyed them, the game was never in doubt.
-
I probably should know this but I can't seem to find anything. Outside of the press guide, is there any site on the net that keeps track of history of Basketball programs? I guess specifically, is there anywhere on the net that you can find out a teams record against other schools and what the scores were? This is the first year out of the past 30 that I have yet to pick up a press guide. You can actually download the media guide in PDF form https://admin.xosn.com/pdf9/4015812.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=100 We won 1/1/1921, we lost to them two days later again on the road.

My favorite stat of the game, Nebraska 16 offensive rebounds. Minnesota 22 TOTAL rebounds. -
I would be ecstatic if we go 4 - 2. I would be happy if we go 3 - 3. I think we go 2 - 4.

The Northwestern game is going to frustrate me all year. That is a game where we just lacked effort. -

I guess a good time to have a scoring drought is when you are ahead by 30 + points.
