HHCC Game #5 -Nov 24 vs. Kent State (8:00 PM)
uneblinstu replied to UsAlways_AJS's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
NU - 76 Kent - 59 -
Interesting that in the pregame Miles said he uses the Ken Pom site to help track trends and such and that this game as well as the next three are basically coin flip games. We got the first one. How will we do on the next three? It'd be nice to get at least the two at home and be 6-1 heading into the Creighton game.

CWG, I think once we get into conference play, we won't see those cheap fouls as much on AA and Ubes. -
- Nebraska played with great intensity to start the game, shot the ball well, seemed to take Tulane a little off guard. - NU hit seven 3's in the first half and were only up 5. Good job by Tulane to not let the game get out of hand. - Conversly, Tulane set the pace in the 2nd half and clearly outplayed the Huskers the first 12 minutes or so. - Nebraska got a pretty balanced attack with four players in double figures including two with 14. - NU was pretty abysmal from the line. 11/19 isn’t going to cut it. - Tulane has a nice little tandem with Davis and Callahan. This was a team that came in averaging more than 75 ppg and NU held them to under 60. It didn’t feel like it at times, but that’s a pretty impressive defensive effort from the Huskers. - NU has to do a better job of rebounding, especially defensively. That stat alone kept Tulane in the game. That was the book on the Green Wave. They like to crash the boards, and they did tonight. 11 offensive rebounds are way too many. - I’m a little concerned about the conditioning of this team. They seemed a little gassed at times in the middle of the 2nd half. They got a nice second wind, but that may be something to keep an eye on. - Offensively, they looked a little sluggish too. Not as much movement as we’ve seen in previous games. - This was a pretty solid win. Tulane is a team that probably would be in the middle of the pack in most major conferences. Easily the best team NU has faced so far and they had to battle through some adversity and found a way to make it happen. - The refs seemed a bit over their head as well. That’s all I’ll say about that. - Good to see Shields make it onto the court. He looked like he hadn’t practiced much, a little rusty, nervous too, but he didn’t look out of place. Give him some time and he’ll be just fine. - Nebraska played with great intensity to start the game, shot the ball well, seemed to take Tulane a little off guard.

Just can't see anyone leaving the SEC.

I don't think they'll take them either, i'd just love to see it. I just think they fit pretty well culturally into the Big Ten.

Except that Kansas delivers Kansas City, Mizzou doesn't. Mizzou, if it delivers anything, it would be St. Louis, but that's more of a pro sports town than KC is.
-
Norm, Kansas would bring more TV's than Mizzou would.

This is a huge blow for PSU. He's out for the year.

Penn St, Northwestern, Purdue have a lot of work to do. We play those teams five times. There's some wins there. Iowa and Illinois will be splitable. Unless they get ravaged by injuries, this team isn't as bad as many people are saying it is. At worst, they'll finish where they did last year in terms of wins. I know the top of the league is good. Very good. Perhaps even great, but the bottom will present opportunities for some wins.
-
This team will be very similar in conference record as what they had last year. They'll be right in the 4 to 6 win range in conference.

Nebraska is 3-0. Not many expected that. - UNO was the aggressor early and it showed. They shot well, played with an intensity that NU did not match until probably halftime. I think that aggression also wore down the Mavs as the game went on. - NU shot rather poorly from the perimeter. And they still found a way to get to 75. That's a good sign. - I think we got a glimpse of what Miles wants his offense to be. There was a lot of movement and rather aggressive and they found ways to get some open looks. But for as aggresive as we were, it would be nice to find a way to get to the line some as well. - Benny Parker can be a spark plug. But if he's not going to score points, he needs to do better distributing the ball. I know he had some foul trouble in first half which contributed to that as well. - Andre had a monster day, and he should have as UNO didn't have anyone who really had much of a chance slowing him down. Still, it was good to see him actually finish at the rim today. It was also nice to be able to sit him for quite a while in the second. Had some nice passing out of the post, too. - Also on Andre, he takes a lot of contact and because he's so big, it doesn't move him. I'd like to think that when we get into conference play we'll see more of that, but in a lot of ways, I don't think his line showed how much he really did down low today. - Talley, while he had an off day from the perimeter, he was able to get to the rim a bit. - Ray settled for too many outside jumpers. I'd like to see him venture into the trees a little more and see if he can get to the line. IIRC, when he came to NU, he was known for his mid-range jumper, not his 3 point shooting. Would be nice to see that come back. - Miles on his post game show said the players thought they took UNO lightly. They certainly played like it early. You guys take it from there... - Lots of fouls means lots of Peltz and Tyrance. Tyrance especially really looked like a walk-on at times. Game looked to be moving pretty fast for him. - Ubel is playing pretty well, like a senior should. His back to back buckets after Valpo had cut it to 7 were big. - Not a lot of people believe in Almedia. I thought he played pretty well. He's a pretty solid shot blocker, rotated well on defense and made some really nice passes out of the double team. He just needs to convert. I think that will come, he's got the ability. - Ray looks so much better than he did his sophomore year. He's always had the leaping ability, we saw some of that, now he's knocking down shots confidently. - I didn't know what to expect from this team defensively this year. They seemed to have a good plan vs. Valpo. - Offensively, I'm not sure they still know what they're doing, but they certainly move around a lot more, which is good. We'll see if they can turn it into something effective. Still haven't quite learned how to play vs. a zone. - I really like the maturation we're seeing from Rivers. Will be a vital factor for this team if they want to exceed any expectations. - Parker's gonna be a pretty solid player. - Got a string of a empty possessions in the 2nd half that let Valpo back into the game. - Gotta like the intensity this team plays with. I was afraid they would let Valpo back in the game after they cut the lead to 7, but they never did. - How much of Valpo's shooting woes were an off shooting night and how much was Nebraska's defense? I don't know. But Valpo had very few uncontested looks. I think that let them get beat of the dribble a few times more than I expected, respecting the three. - For as much as Valpo is known for their shooting, I thought they'd shoot free throws better. - NU with another dry spell. No bueno. Can't keep doing that. For all the talk about how good Valpo was, gotta give Nebraska their due for having a good plan to shut them down and protecting the home court. Good win for Nebraska, lots of work still to do. This post has been promoted to an article

I don't see them destroying us. They might beat us, but they won't blow us out.

Thanks guys. Hated to have to miss the game, but that's life sometimes.
