I think so. Likely bolstered by the Tradition Coalition. Ultimately it’s not my money if things go south, so I’m not all that passionate about this one way or the other. The notion that Trev would be poached by a big time school is premature in my opinion. Hopefully everyone wants him soon, that would be great for us. I just can’t see some SEC school clamoring for an AD who retains 3 win football coaches and throws away seasons despite strong evidence against doing so. Big football schools would have made him fire the coach or flat out canned the AD. Regardless. I think Trev is going to be here a while and I welcome stability. It would be great if Trev was here the next 8 years and got our men’s programs competitive again. Perhaps it may be premature but it could work out very well in the end.

Just real clown stuff from the University. Our men’s sports have never been this bad ever. Understand that Trev didn’t cause it, but maybe let’s be a little more practical until we aren’t the gutter dumpster of men’s P5 sports before we lock up an AD who hasn’t really proven anything to a mega contract. I mean he made a terrible decision on retaining Frost and letting Kalen DeBoer go only to have to throw an entire season away and fire Frost early for a big penalty. Now I am optimistic about the Rhule hire, but it’s too early to tell. Giving Fred another year (to me) was a huge risk that quite frankly wouldn’t fly anywhere else. Like Fred and the current team a lot but if he goes .500 or worse again this year it was a horrible decision. Hopefully Rhule and Fred get it going. But until they do, I don’t see any reason to lock up Trev (like that anyway). I like Trev, too. I just think it’s silly. My two cents, I’m sure others will disagree.

As someone who was behind making coaching change earlier this year, I am excited for this commitment. This kid can flat out hoop. If Fred can parlay the upcoming season into a success, this will be an excellent building block moving forward.

They would be the most intriguing backcourt around for sure. That’s a lot of threes that are going to get chucked up though. When they are going in, look out. When they aren’t, there’s not enough defense there to prevent from getting rolled on. It would be entertaining no doubt though.

You hate to see it.

The fact that we have invested so much makes it sting even more. We have an amazing arena and practice facility. We have a fan base that sells out the arena. Bramlage is a dump compared to the PBA. We erected practice facilities at a similar time and by all accounts Hendricks is far superior to Ice. The expectations clearly aren’t that difficult here. We retained a 40-83 coach with a .228 conference winning percentage and it wasn’t even a question. Why? Because we finished .500. We have had 3 winning seasons out of our last 12. Doesn’t seem to be a sense of urgency to change that either. The decision was made to retain Fred. I’m 100% in his corner to get this turned around. I’m hoping we get some transfers, turn the corner and never look back. But from a 10,000 foot view, this program is a total mess and it’s going to take some serious soul searching to fix it. Now excuse me while a grab a box of tissues, a gallon of Häagen-Dazs, and depressingly cry as Creighton makes the Elite 8 tonight.

Totally. Kansas State expects to be successful in basketball and that’s the difference. I don’t think they would put up with how bad we have been lately.

I would like to see this kid here. I watched him play in a game earlier this year, really like his game.

I know this isn’t popular, but I don’t support Fred being here another year. I foresee another .500 or below year. I think by bringing him back, we lack sense of urgency and are essentially just throwing a year down the drain. Very similar to bringing back Frost when every possible fact and metric pointed to it just wasn’t going to work out. It likely will put us at least two years out from being a good basketball team and I would argue that this next season should be the rebuild year. That said, the decision has likely been made so there’s no point whining or dwelling on it. So what does Fred need to do next year? To me he needs to go above .500 in conference play and get to 19 wins. If we don’t quite make the NCAA tourney, I’m fine with that. This would mean we are a bubble-type team and would be hosting an NIT game. If these metrics were met, I’d look to extend Fred’s contract and give him a slight pay increase back up to $3.5 million. This would mean that we have played mostly quality basketball for 1.5 seasons which to me is in line with expectations here.

I didn’t post last night because I was just too heartbroken. I thought I would be better today but I’m not. Given Fred’s overall record and the production he’s about to lose, I’m just not sold on retention. It will likely happen, but logically, I don’t think there are a lot of reasons to do so.

I think the only piece that we can heavily rely on for next year is Lawrence. It’s another complete roster rebuild.

Like most of Shatel’s articles, he’s wrong about most of the things he writes about. Rasmussen was a really good athletic director, but I’m not sure that’s the answer here. I would consult him if we decided to hire a new coach for sure though. His NIL point is solid. We should look to improve this if we are serious about basketball.
