Nebraska @ Ohio State random notes made while watching the game Using a Nike Elite basketball….it would be interesting to compare performances with brands of basketballs….definitely have a different feel brand by brand Why do we roll the ball on inbounds…with 18 minutes left in first half Someday somebody is going to take advantage of that tendency Evans Taylor missed lay up with 16 to go first half…unable to draw foul call by officials, cost a three pointer on the other end…5 point swing. Probably right call…defender went straight up… Mcveigh help defense in middle of lane on possession with 12:45 left first half In comparison, Ohio state man guarding mcveigh nearly dead center in lane while in similar help position Bad camera angles Mcveigh forcing it….needs to let game come to hm Horne looked lost on defense 8 minute mark Jacobsen got away with being out of bounds on his third steal I like the change of pace with the zone. I like the aggression while we are playing it We did leave the corner three open, but they missed it First half 24-30 Tai and Jacobsen played well Evan and mcveigh struggled Overall, could be worse Only allowed 1 offensive board….that suprised me Physical first half, but only 4 fouls on Ohio state Watson got hosed on his third foul… Too much dribbling by Watson and tai early in second half Watson got hosed on his fourth foul too… Two guys bloodied, but no fouls called on Ohio state. Morrow first enters second half at 13:38…too long on bench unless he isn't 100% No fouls on Ohio state in first 8 minutes Miles showing restraint, I would have gotten A Technical by now The 18 foot jumper is a horrible shot Fuller gives solid minutes I think miles need to use him as a spark plug almost every game Maybe just 3-5 minutes a game, but good things tend to happen while he is in the game. Morrow assist, he will be an all big ten player if realizes he can get five assists a game because of the opposing teams need to collapse on him Officiating is inconsistent….on Ohio state defensive end, aggression is rewarded…on Nebraska defensive end aggression penalized I like the timeout with six to go. Two bad possessions in a row, good timeout after those bad shots Ed morrows fifth foul horrible. I hate the restricted area…I don't understand the purpose of it. why shouldn't defense have right to their spot anywhere on the court? Might be the worst officiated game of year Gutsiest win in forever

If there is time on the clock...keep playing. I have no problem with teams continuing to try to score with time left on the clock. I actually think is less of a sportsman thing to do...to hold the ball at half court and let the last 30 seconds run off the clock. Play till the end...if we wanted to have the game only be 39:30, we could adjust the clock to make that happen.
-
Even if you call it a Block...he travels before he shoots the ball, so no basket no matter what. Personally, I would call it a blocking foul...waive off the basket since he put the shot up after an extra step....on the floor.
-
I had that on my list, too...but I think it is called more often now than in the past..the moving pick. I think it needs to be looked at...because it is called inconsistently....sometimes a guy gets a foul for a great screen and on the next possession sets a sloppy pick and gets away with it.

My ideas for experimental rules. Allow coaches to have the option to advance the ball to midcourt on a timeout...but if they take that option, they don't get the time alotted to talk to the players...play resumes immediately. This would speed up the game in the last minute by elminating a couple minutes of no action it would also allow teams to have an actual play at the basket in a last second opportunity It would also force coaches to have plays ready for these instances, rather than draw them up Reviews...when looking at reviews of balls knocked out of bounds Right now if an obvious foul was missed but it caused an opposing player to knock the ball out of bounds, they will award the ball to team that should have been called for a foul I believe the officials should take into consideration that the foul (although not called, and still won't be called) caused the ball to go out of bounds and award the ball to the opposing team even if they were last to touch it. To me it seems crazy, they can look at who touched it last but can't take into consideration that a player slapped a guys wrist causing the ball to go out of bounds No timeouts when players are on the ground Awarding a timeout, they often award it as a guy is getting tied up...and it is tough to guage actual possession in these situations Only award timeouts when two feet are on the ground and no other body parts 5 seconds calls They have eliminated the dribbling/closely guarded call I would like to see the five second count on at all times regardless of being closely guarded you get 4 seconds to hold it, 4 seconds to dribble, 4 seconds to pass or shoot This would force more passing and less one on one dribbling I believe it would force more movement...and you would get away from 4 guys standing on the baseline while a point guard tries to drive to the hoop possession after possession My ideas for points of emphasis Travelling...it needs to be reigned in There is nothing worse than seeing a guy get away with travelling only to be rewarded with a foul by the opposing player...who played good defense but only got caught out of position when his oppponent was granted an extra step The euro step when done right is legal...although it is rarely done right and players are getting an extra step. There are so many times on the Eurostep that the player gathers with his back foot on the ground (which makes it his pivot foot) and he takes two full steps which once the pivot foot hits the ground again it is a travel Often they draw a blocking call on the final step...which punished good defensive position overall footwork on the perimeter is sloppy so many players take an extra step when catching the ball and it puts the defensive player at a disadvantage Block Shots Officials need to pay attention to the action after the ball is hit if a player blocks the shot up top, but follows through and hits the shooter, it should be a foul Blocks need to be clean all the way through.. You see a jump shooter get a call on getting hit on their follow through, but a big guy getting hammered after a guy blocks the shot up high, he rarely gets the call Random ideas
-
When did getting all ball up top on a block...but hammering a guy after the block or nailing him with the body...become Okay. When i played competitive ball...the block had to be absolutely clean...if not, it was a foul...to allow a guy to hammer a guy after he gets all ball is giving him an advantage to go through a player to get a blocked shot.

I would give the kid the benefit of the doubt. It probably should have been called a foul...since he displaced Tai, but in my opinon, he was trying to get inside position and got a little over zealous...the fact that he continued to the hoop to try to grab the board leads me to believe it wasn't intended to be a cheap shot, but to get position for a Rebound. -

My guess...is it is still a trust factor...For him to play either Jacobsen or Morrow have to be on the bench. I think right now, Miles trusts Jacobsen and Morrow more....Jordy will earn that trust as he continues to play better...but I think sometimes as fans we overthing substitutions and many times gut feel and trust by the coaches determines who plays..especially in the second half. I do think coaches come in with a game plan on playing time in the first half...but by the 15 minute mark in the second half, I think gut and feel takeover... -

Here are a few things I jotted down while watching tonight. Morrow needs to keep the ball high...in the last two games, bad things have happened when he has tried to dribble it after a rebound Half court shots to end a half can sometimes hurt intensity....the first couple minutes of the second half were important to see the team didn't relax Morrow was playing tight defense on 24 when the ball was on the opposite side three point line, not sure if that was intentional...during that play a drive to the basket Morrow as not able to provide help in time. McVeigh played help defense with both feet in the lane when the ball was two passes away and the ball was below the free throw line...Evans and Roby only had one foot in the lane...but none of the Three were near the middle of the lane....Interesting if this was by design to give them each an extra step to recover on a skip pass to protect against the 3 point shot Confidence...if you ever wondered what a difference it makes....Look at Jack McVeigh...He is a different player than he was 6 weeks ago. -
I personally would like to eliminate the double bonus...and go back to the 1 & 1 Or (1 plus the Bonus as it is sometimes called) It would put more pressure on shooting free throws and make the ends of games more exciting...I personally loved the end of games back in the 80s where there was more fouling to help teams try to catch up...now coaches don't resort to fouling until under a minute....by then it is too late.

The Euro Step is legal...however, often guys gather the ball to quickly and get an extra step..which is a travel. When executed the Euro step is legal...but often players gather the ball where it becomes a travel when they take the steps. A lot of the times, a player gathers with a foot off the floor and officials allow two steps (that is illegal, because the foot on the floor is the pivot foot and it cannot be picked up off the floor and put back down without shooting or passing) A legal Euro Step is when they gather with both fee in the air and the first foot that lands becomes the pivot foot which allows the two steps.... In the Video above, mulitple times the players are travelling and it is not called because of the speed of the move, but the players are often gathering the ball with the front foot in the air and the back foot still on the ground.... Rules Below: . . . A player, who catches the ball while moving or dribbling, may stop, and establish a pivot foot as follows: If both feet are off the floor and the player lands: Simultaneously on both feet, either foot may be the pivot. On one foot followed by the other, the first foot to touch is the pivot. On one foot, the player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in this case. If one foot is on the floor: It is the pivot when the other foot touches in a step. The player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in this case. -

I disagree with your premise...Officials absolutely affect turnover margins and shooting percentages. if they allow one team to grab arms, foul etc...turnovers will happen and shots will be missed. I think at least two or three turnovers by Jack were a direct result of Wisconsin getting away with a foul. There is nothing more frustrating to see a team get away with a violation or a foul that directly causes a violation, foul or turnover by the opposing team.. -

I agree...My thought has always been...Can you coach a team to prepare for the conference tournament. I know their are high school coaches that always seem to find ways to win districts, regardless of record...and the regular season just seems like preparation for the postseason. Thoughts...do you play Morrow enough to keep him fresh...Watson...maybe he sits a game or two to get 100%. If you know the only way to the tourney is winning the conference tourney, do you change the way you manage your roster and your gameplanning over the next couple of weeks? -
I believe that MJ's shot looks like it could be a threat...however, when you take 1 maybe 2 jumpers a game and miss them...small sample sizes set in and confidence can get rattled. He needs to have a game where he shoots till he is hot....possibly in the offseason leagues and in the non conference schedule.

How does next season end (assuming Miles is retained)?
Blindcheck replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I doubt Fred Hoiberg leaves prior to the Bulls being eliminated from the playoffs or the regular season ends. (by his choice or the Bulls) Regular season ends April 12th, A school would have to have a very drawn our search to hire Hoiberg -
I see Talent...but the talent has to continue to improve if we want to see quality results. I do See Iowa as being in the same situation that Nebraska is.

I have always liked Doug Gottlieb. He is one of the more interesting guys on the radio/TV broadcasts. I never understood why everyone was so beat up over these comments. -
I have wondered if they should adopt advancing the ball to midcourt after a timeout (only if you are becoming the offense, the other team just scored or you have gained possession). The caveat I would put if a coach chose to advance the ball, they waive the 30 seconds and play begins immediately....so you can choose to take time to draw up a play or you can choose to advance the ball. Would speed up play if coaches saved these timeouts for this purpose...instead of 2 timeouts at 1 minute plus each...they take 10 seconds and get the play restarted from midcourt. it would speed up the last two minutes of the game if coaches chose to advance the ball.
-
The other thing that teams don't take advantage of to force timeouts in the last 2 to 3 minutes of a game. You are given 5 seconds to inbounds the ball and they usually give you a second or two to get to the ball before they start the count. With a 30 second shot clock, you can run 30 seconds off the clock per possession when you are in the lead...if you take 2 seconds to get to the ball and throw the ball in at 4 seconds, you could run an additional 6 seconds when you are trying to bleed the clock...If it became obvious you are doing this, the opposing coach might choose to call timeouts to eliminate the 6 seconds run off. In the last minute of the game, the clock stops after a made basket, but prior to that rule, you have the ability to bleed a few more seconds here and there...when you are up 12 points, bleeding 6 extra seconds after 5 made baskets, basically eliminates a possession for the other team....or forces them to start fouling earlier. Now, I usually am not a proponent of bleeding the clock too early...this is just an observation when teams are bleeding the clock, why don't they take advantage of the rules to bleed extra time.
