The situation i was describing was after a made basket.

When you see a timeout after a basket and they don't set up a press...that really drives me nuts...because...if you are going to fall back into a half court defense, you should be able to call that from the sideline... Calling a timeout to set up a press prevents the offense from getting a quick inbounds and allows all defensive players to get into place.

who knows, he might be selling shoes somewhere, now. Just because he has had success at Illinois and Kansas, does not mean he would have done it here. Some jobs are tougher...and there are very good coaches whose career died because they couldn't win at a place that is tough to win.

Couldn't watch game, but saw the final and the stats...Awesome win...thanks Jack

Why announce top 16 teams in February?
Blindcheck replied to jimmykc's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
The Football playoff committee ranks the top 25, when they only need 4 teams for their playoff. so, the committee should rank about the top 100 because they need 68 total teams (36 at large bids) -

And if you are going to do it...the most interesting part are last four in, first four out, etc. Everyone already kind of knows the top 16 -

Ed Morrow is our most important player.
Blindcheck replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I think there are four players this year...that losing any of them makes it much more difficult to win Morrow Watson Jacobsen Webster Morrow and Jacobsen..because they complement each other so well...both benefit by having the other down low...both get rebounds and put backs..because both are doing their jobs. there are times when morrow gets a rebound and scores, but the hard work to get that board was done by jacobsen...and vice versa. -
Looks like we have another candidate.

Boy, do we miss Morrow. -
I played for a coach that was man to man all game long...except we would zone inbounds plays under the basket.

Jacobsen moved to the left on the fake which helped open up an even easier lane to the easy lay up.... in the heat of the moment, Tai and Roby might not have known that Watson had fallen down...they were both switching as instructed. The only thing I would have done different was stick Jacobsen in the lane.

Probably the one guy who might have earned some more minutes in the second half by his play in the first half was Fuller. -

he did make it from the right hand side...but had tai left the other guy, he would have made it from the left hand side....it was two on one once Watson fell down -

had he chose the guy open under the bucket...the guy he covered would have been the one open under the bucket (just on the other side)...damned if you do, damned if you don't -
I think the year we win the NCAA tourney game....it will come from nowhere... like an 8-10 record in the conference and win the Big ten tourney to sneak in as 13 seed and boom we get that win and nobody saw it coming...

The Final play...Watson fell/slipped...Tai had to choose which guy to cover and left one guy open. Miles had jacobsen on the inbounder...I wish he would have had him in the paint. -
It all depends on what you are willing to give up. If you are willing to live with more easy baskets at the rim...then you can take away the wide open 3...if you want to stop the drive, you will leave yourself vulnerable to open 3. I think sometimes you just need to mix up your defenses...sometimes take away the drive..other times stick to the shooter...It is very tough to take away both options....but by varying what you take away...the guy who is driving might anticipate the help and throw the ball right to our guy that has stayed on the shooter.....

Help defense is a must in college basketball, but every player has to rotate and often, when you see a guy closing out late to a player hitting the wide open three...it might not be because he helped, but because others didn't do their job in the help situation and he either helped too much. I have always coached man to man defense with help, but if one guy doesn't follow the "rules" you see wide open shots...and often the guy scrambling back to cover the wide open shooter is not the guy who should get "yelled" at...but someone else didn't rotate properly and the guy diving back is trying to recover because not everyone rotated properly. Also, I had guys that were told not to leave their man...in situations where there was a specific player that you didn't want to get an open shot.

The thing that drives me nuts about travelling that isn't called is when a player takes that extra step and the defensive player gets called for a Block..The defensive player had good position until the the offensive player is allowed that extra step..

I understand your point of view...but if you keep stretching the rules...the most talented player has a huge advantage. I like it when the most skilled talented players have the advantage..those that work on their game... Calling Travelling rewards Basketball Skills.
