My guess is Miles is giving him another year to "showcase" some upside. Heck we didn't even fill the open scholarship we had for this year so why would it be a big deal to wait and see if the light comes on in a last chance season. If it works out great but if not he transfers and you have the extra scholarship for the spring going forward. Also another reason you have to assume no one was asked to leave was the APR and keeping the levels up with all the previous turnover. You have to expect it will happen if you're Miles so if you can build up a years level for the future by giving it another year you do it. fair point, kamdy. I still think being gone would have been less a function of coach prodding and more of a probability that Serge would have realized he was in over his head, open schollie or not, and would have opted to preserve his clock by dropping down in competition. The fact that he hasn't done that I take as a sign that coaches are telling him he may yet make a player.

KenPom 2013-2014 KenPom Rankings Thread

I was on the same wavelength, tcp. I was thinking if we can slip past UMass, we probably lose to New Mex, but are likely even money with or better than whoever we'd face in game three. Key will be getting past UMass. Do that and we finish in the top half of the tourney. the neat thing is that even a loss to UMass gets us into a winnable bracket. While I'd love to upset the Minutemen obviously, it's not necessarily a bad thing if we drop straight into the losers bracket after round one. i can't believe how geeked this team has gotten me for this season already. hey, on a side note Norm, you notice the absence of the patented "drought" in the last game? Something to watch with this team. -
My worst score *ever* in this competition. And I frigging love it. I hope I faceplant 15 more times this season.

I have to get my mind out of the old days of 55 point ball. Edit: Apparently it's cool for this game, though. NU-65 WIU-49 -
KenPom 2013-2014 KenPom Rankings Thread

looking like our bracket for the charleston tournament might be the nastiest. that one's going to be a good learning experience however it goes, but I think we should be good enough to pull down at least one win. -
Mikki's a great comparison, since it took him awhile to grow into his game. Centers have to be looked at a bit differently than other players. If Serge had zero upside, I think he'd be gone already. I'm willing to trust the staff and wait on him.

I deserved that and I know you enjoyed it.

hey, we're in a 100-way tie for 17th in CBS sports rpi! heh heh. -
I don't want to upset those people that say they can spot a players potential after about 10 minutes. That is way too small a sample size for me and I haven't seen enough to make a statement on Sergej's potential for this year and certainly not long term. In limited time without checking the stats I saw 1 maybe 2 rebounds where he secured the ball high & the running hook was a solid move. So I'm deferring to Coach Miles and those who see him everyday in practice for this one. Sorry no help here. Well, it's kind of a help, because it tells me you saw some positive things small sample or not. Mostly that was a cry for a second pair of eyeballs, because I wasn't trusting my own on Serge. Thanks for giving it a shot, though.

Thanks for the update. My understanding is that this is a team we shouldn't take lightly (really, we shouldn't take any team lightly, but you know what I'm saying). You doing a write up before the game?

If anyone's played a video game, they'll understand this post. What we think is this thing called quickness, is probably more accurately attributed to knowledge. You're playing God of War on hardcore, and getting your tail handed to you. Why? Because every move you make is improvised in unknown terrain. But as you fail, you gain knowledge of the terrain, and what you need to do in it to succeed. Eventually, if for nothing more than memory, you pass the level because you finally know what to do at each step of the way. Your time is also much faster than when you're having to think through things. This is what I saw last night. Some players that had started to integrate the proper moves in known terrain. It makes you look a lot faster than you did when you were struggling to think about what to do on the fly. We're not quicker, per se. We're more experienced and more drilled in how to play ball. Strength, on the other hand, is another egg. I do think we have some players who are stronger, but I would expect no less between the freshman and sophomore season. I'm still pretty giddy after last night's win. We clearly had a productive offseason.

it's hard to know why miles has him locked down this much, but i'm wondering if he's just a really slow learner. I've seen some flashes of skill from him and not sure why he can't hold down 3-4 minutes in a pinch. maybe Dean can comment on this, since Miles isn't exactly prone to explain it in depth.

i'm sure agau understood that was the price to pay to go to a top program. in the meantime, he can watch us rise up from a distance.

i'm actually happy for you, nustudent. kinda fun being in the glass half full camp again, yes?

benny flashed what's going to be his trademark this season. he's going to wind up a designated defender that can score. he's too quick to not put on the court given the rules situation this year and he showed he's improved his drive to be able to finish amongst bigger players. interesting thing is what we saw tonight he showed sparks of last season, if one were willing to look.
