Big Red Joust with Scarlet Knights Saturday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home to take on Rutgers Saturday in the first-ever trip to Lincoln for the Scarlet Knights. Tip-off between the Big Red and Rutgers is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Huskers have won back-to-back games after notching their first road win of the season with an 83-78 victory at Penn State on Wednesday. Sophomore shooting guard Natalie Romeo erupted for a career-high 32 points, including a school-record eight three-pointers against the Lady Lions.

Freshman forward Jessica Shepard added her third Big Ten double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds to power the Huskers inside.

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Coach C. Vivian Stringer brings her 21st Rutgers team to Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday for the Scarlet Knights’ first-ever visit to Lincoln in women’s basketball. Stringer, who is in her 45th season as a head coach owns 964 career victories.

Preseason first-team All-Big Ten selection Kahleah Copper leads the Scarlet Knights. She is averaging 17.2 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. Rachel Hollivay (6.7 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Briyona Canty (5.2 ppg) provide plenty of experience to the Rutgers starting five, as does Tyler Scaife. She is averaging a team-best 17.9 points and 3.4 rebounds.

One of the Big Ten’s best defensive teams, Rutgers has allowed just 54.9 points per game while holding the opposition to just 35.8 percent shooting from the field and 31.3 percent accuracy from three-point range.

Offensively, Rutgers averages just 63.0 points per game, but is shooting a healthy 45.6 percent from the field, including 35.5 percent from three-point range. The Scarlet Knights hit 4.2 threes per game. Rutgers owns a plus-2.9 team rebounding margin and a plus-0.5 team turnover margin. The Scarlet Knights commit 3.8 more fouls per game than their opponents, while the opposition has outscored RU by 1.2 points per game at the free throw line.

Rutgers won the only previous meeting in the series with Nebraska.

4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 5.4

4 - Briyona Canty - 5-9 - RSr. - G - 5.2
5 - Shrita Parker - 5-7 - So. - G - 4.6

Rutgers is making its first-ever trip to Lincoln.

Nebraska administrative assistant/video coordinator Katie Adams was a four-year player for Coach C. Vivian Stringer at Rutgers, helping the Scarlet Knights to the 2007 NCAA Championship Game as a junior.

Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame head coach C. Vivian Stringer has led Rutgers to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in her 20 previous seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

Jessica Shepard earned her sixth Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award last week.

Rachel Theriot ranks No. 18 in career points at Nebraska with 1,211. She needs 32 points to catch Brooke Schwartz on NU’s all-time scoring list.

Natalie Romeo ranks sixth nationally with 3.3 threes per game while leading the Huskers with 52 threes on 43.7 percent shooting (20th nationally) from long range.

Natalie Romeo ranks third among sophomores in Nebraska history with 52 and needs 15 more to match NU career three-point leader Jordan Hooper’s 67.

Jessica Shepard reached the 100-point (5 games), 200-point (11 games) and 300-point (16 games) scoring marks faster than any Husker freshman in history. She owns 318 points and only six freshmen in school history have reached the 400-point mark.

Nebraska only has 6 more home games after this one.

GAME NOTES:

                                             BEAT RUTGERS!

I'll go first...you guys can hammer on me if you wish. Guessing out loud.....

It looks like a 52% Rutgers to 48% NU game. But figure in the home court give 2% back to NU...so it's close to a toss up ?

We must slow down their forward Cooper, their best overall player, She can do it all. Quick, athletic. If we can slow her considerably, that alone could make the difference. Not sure we have anyone that can do it consistently. Cooper is their best rebounder too. Could play for most any other team.

The second player to stop is guard Scaife, an equivalent to the best guards of Penn St. Probably better. Same as above...slow her scoring and that alone could make the difference.

Rutgers plays their starters most of the game and doesn't sub much. Cooper and Scaife pretty much are their big scoring.

Rutger's is not as big as Penn St, so we might be able to do a little better hitting the boards.  Most of their team is quick and athletic. Their center is good rebounder, fair shooter.

If we can some how wear Rutgers down, that would help our cause, especially late. (that where us playing fast has it's advantages. But can't turn the ball over doing it.

We absolutely MUST stop our turnovers. Can't have more than, say 10-12 max.....it's a difference maker...we nearly lost at Penn St because of it.

They will probably go after and foul Jess a lot, it will probably be ugly. Same with most anyone else with the ball.  Ref's must call Rutger fouls or it also could also be the difference maker too. With luck, maybe foul a couple of them out? Make them go to their bench.

Their defense will probably be better than Penn St....and with more fouling.

May do the same to Nat. If we can get a least two more big scorer's in RT, Clark, Havers, or RB43 or?...10 or more points....and everyone off the bench must score...and rebound. Maddie looked rusty last game..still not healed up.

If RT can have one of her typical games and hits for 15-20...it will make a big difference.

Need to shoot near 40-45% or better. A 30's % game would be a killer

We know Jess and Nat can score. Others must too. Turnovers will loose this game. REBOUND!

This game is big going into the rest of B1G schedule...and our RPI for NCAA. Some how we need to win 9 (I think) more games ....including a B1G tourney win(s).

Rutgers is a very athletic team and they don't hesitate to take shots. If they're open, chances are the shot's going up. Huskers need to rebound the ball well on both ends of the court, stop dribble penetration, limit the turnovers and make free throws.

Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer won't be at the game today:

Assistant coach Timothy Eatman will take over head coaching duties for the Rutgers women’s basketball team’s game at Nebraska as head coach C. Vivian Stringer attends to her mother, Thelma Stoner, who has fallen ill in recent weeks.

“Unfortunately at this time my family and I must surround my mother with love and support during this difficult stretch,” said Stringer. “I have full faith in Coach Eatman, the staff and the Scarlet Knights to carry on in my absence

Lucky to be within 2 at the half, Rutgers a lot better off the glass, & Huskers have missed a lot of shots.

Should be an interesting 2nd half. Rutgers has had probs with players fouling out so maybe in 2nd half.

If you could see it live you would understand why they foul out. Hopefully the it will shape up that way the second half
