Huskers Shoot for Road Win at Penn State

The Nebraska women’s basketball team travels to University Park, Pa., in search of its first road win of the season on Wednesday, when the Huskers take on Penn State. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Lady Lions is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska improved to 10-1 at home with a 73-57 victory over Illinois on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Jessica Shepard powered the Huskers with 29 points, a career-high 19 rebounds and three assists against the Illini to capture her sixth Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award. Jessica, leads the Huskers with 19.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

Senior point guard Rachel Theriot added 17 points and seven assists in a strong effort, while Natalie Romeo pitched in 10 points while playing outstanding perimeter defense.

The Lady Lions, who return four starters from a squad that went 6-24 overall and 3-15 in Big Ten play last season, are 0-7 this season away from home, but a solid 6-2 on their home court at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Teniya Page leads the Lady Lions with team-best averages of 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while adding 4.6 rebounds per contest. Page has knocked down 41 percent of her threes on the season. Brianna Banks, a UConn transfer, has contributed 13.4 points per game. Lindsey Spann, who was Penn State’s top returning scorer from a year ago, has added 12.5 points

As a team, the Lady Lions are averaging 70.3 points, but surrendering 70.7 points per game, which ranks 13th in the Big Ten. Penn State is being out shot from the field (.412-.410), three-point range (.351-.316) and the free throw line (.721-.681), while being out rebounded (39.8-38.6). Penn State does own a plus-1.9 team turnover margin.

In Penn State’s six wins, the Lady Lions have shot better than 40 percent from the field in every game and carry a combined plus-9.3 rebound margin. PSU also has attempted an average of 10.5 more free throws than its opponents in Lady Lion victories.

In their nine losses, Penn State has been out rebounded by an average of 8.2 boards per game, while shooting 5.6 fewer free throws per game than the opposition. PSU has shot worse than 40 percent in six of its nine setbacks.

Penn State leads the all-time series with Nebraska, 5-3, but the Huskers are 3-3 against the Lady Lions as Big Ten foes.

12 - Lindsey Spann - 5-6 - So. - G - 12.5

Jessica Shepard earned her sixth Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award last Monday.

Jessica Shepard had 29 points and a career-high 19 rebounds against Illinois Sunday for her seventh 20-point scoring effort and sixth double-double.

Rachel Theriot ranks 10th nationally with 6.7 assists per game.

Rachel Theriot is averaging 12.5 ppg as a senior, and ranks No. 18 in career points at Nebraska with 1,211. She needs 32 points to catch Brooke Schwartz on NU’s all-time scoring list.

Rachel Theriot has produced four career games with 12 or more assists and is the most by a Husker in history.

Natalie Romeo ranks 15th nationally with 2.9 threes per game while leading the Huskers with 44 threes.

Natalie Romeo ranks fifth among sophomores in Nebraska history with 44 threes, and needs five more to match Lindsey Moore’s total of 49 for fourth on NU’s sophomore season list.

Natalie Romeo has been Nebraska’s Big Ten Player-of-the-Week nominee four times this season.

Jessica Shepard reached the 100-point (5 games) and 200-point (11 games) scoring marks faster than any Husker freshman in history. Shepard owns 289 points and needs 11 more to reach 300 quicker than any other Husker. Only six freshmen in school history have reached the 400-point mark.

Allie Havers 17 blocked shots and 16 assists are both the top season totals of her career.

GAME NOTES:

                                                                  BEAT PENN ST!

This isn't going to be a "gimme" game. Lions have some real talented quick guards, and decent forwards. Have a big ....about 6-6 big ...shot blocker. Could be a fairly high scoring game.

Quick guards can be a problem at times. Drive to the basket...and quick down the floor. Don't want to get into a track meet with them. Not sure how deep they are. But can score as a team...guards in particular.

We need to play defense at least as well (or better) as against ILL. Penn St will probably go after Jess, so we'll need to distribute the ball, and score away from the basket to draw out the post defense. .........3's please.

We've talked about Allie's experience before she got to UNL. She would have benefited (to the benefit of UNL).... from years of Bball club play before she arrived, rather than playing three sports....which I'm sure she probably enjoyed.

Been said before too...she would have also benefited from a red shirt year. Gain strength, learn the college game requirements, and learn Connie's system.

Would guess some of those coming in next year in the same boat...might use some of the same considerations.

Too late for all that, but Allie has now "blossomed" and will continue to improve...she seems to have more confidence. Has got more blocks than all of last year.

She's one of the few (and Rachel T) on team that shoots the 10'-15' jump shot pretty consistently. Need more that can do that.... rather than clogging up the key and get blocked/crashed. Maddie maybe?

Agree totally.  Coach Yori's program is all about year to improvement.  Sometimes players coming in don't have the patience for this approach.  Want opportunities immediately and then leave when they don't get them.  Happens in all sports.

Not an easy subject to analyze. Maybe better fit for another topic post anyway.

UNL Football and men's basketball, and even our women's volleyball seems to be somewhat of an exception (to wm's Bball)....lots of red shirts. Another long story though.

(in volleyball the team is so loaded with talent...newcomers... maybe the individual can see they're not ready to compete at this level. But also know volleyball recruits are told they may be red shirted. But, some figure out they may never play much and leave.)

For us (wm's Bball) it's kind of a catch 22.  Player may not want to red shirt and sits on bench because she may not really be ready to play much. So transfers because she isn't playing much...even though not ready. But, could be like Allie and contribute more in future years.

Don't fully understand why it's so prevalent on women's basketball. NCAA rules make it too easy? Scholarship structure different?

I'm curious, and I don't know the answer to this question, but how many transfers are actually due to lack of playing time? If you remove transfers due to homesickness/family issues, academic issues, coaching changes, institutional issues (North Carolina and Illinois come to mind), how many are due to lack of playing time? I can't blame a kid if they get homesick or are overwhelmed academically, or the coach that recruits them leaves, or the program starts to fall apart.

BTN Student announcers are not very good, video camera work also not as good a previous BTN Plus presentations.

(Wish I could sync the Huskers.com audio to the BTN video)
