Huskers Tip with Lopers Sunday in Lincoln

The Nebraska women’s basketball team tips off its 2015-16 campaign by taking on Nebraska-Kearney in its exhibition opener at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m.

A new-look Nebraska team will hit the floor for the first time together, with senior All-America candidate Rachel Theriot leading the way for the Huskers. Nebraska will take on NCAA Division II Nebraska-Kearney for the 14th time in the past 15 seasons. The Huskers and UNK haven’t played since the 2013-14 season.

Plenty has changed for both teams since taking last season off from competition against other. Rachel Theriot is the only Husker that has played against UNK. UNK has a new coach this year in Sandy Creek High School and Hastings College alum Carrie Hofstetter.

Nebraska has won all 13 of the previous exhibition meetings with UNK.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers

43 - Rachel Blackburn - 6-3 - Fr.
32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr.
4   - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr.
24 - Maddie Simon - 6-2 - Fr.
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr.

Nebraska-Kearney Lopers

1 - Bri Starks - 5-11 - Sr. - G/F
23 - Kelsey Fitzgerald - 6-0 - Jr.
OR 25 - Imani Kyser - 6-0 - So.
10 - McKenzie Brown - 5-10 - So.
12 - Alexa Hogberg - 5-5 – Jr.
15 - Laramey Becker - 5-8 - Sr.

Nebraska newcomer Kyndal Clark and UNK newcomer Teri Oliver went head-to-head as All-Missouri Valley Conference players in 2011-12, when Clark was a freshman at Drake and Oliver was a junior at Southern Illinois.

With one week left before the start of the exhibition season, Nebraska women’s basketball season ticket sales had reached 3,891, just 11 tickets shy of the all-time record of 3,902.

UNK guard Courtney Aitken was a freshman guard on Nebraska’s 2012-13 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team.

Is Maddie Simon starting instead of Romeo?

Simon and Romeo do not play the same position (even though Simon is listed as a guard I would really say that she is more of a guard/forward combo, similar to Sample from last year- Romeo is a pure guard).  If the "Probable Starters" is correct then it would be that Clark is starting instead of Romeo.

Natalie got herself into a little trouble last spring. I will be surprised if we see her play tomorrow at all. May not be a good sign for Maddie also. Two years ago Hannah Tvrdy started both exhibition games and didn't see much playing time after the regular season started.

Should be interesting to watch if you're interested in watching local talent from the past couple of years. Nebraska/Kearney has seventeen listed on their roster, 9 of those players are from the state of Nebraska. Including Courtney Aiken the one time Husker. Carrie Hofstetter their head coach is from Sandy Creek and one of her assistant coaches is Sutton native Jamie (Van Kirk) Rapp.

Yes, Romero may be paying a bit of a penalty for the previous issue.

But it's petty clear Yori wants to get the newbies playing time. No time like the present, to play against opponents we hopefully will have the luxury of doing some experimenting.

As I said, and for others here, I can't be at the game.

In any event, I hope we have some eye witnesses here, reporting of the game, and how we did today.

And if possible some thoughts as to where we might be able to go as a team. (granted it's just the first experiment for Connie.)

Especially interested in Jess, and Rachel B inside......and Maddie, and Clark, and Rachel T.......well everyone

Go get them ladies !!!

There is a lot of reasons to be excited today.  First and foremost is the fact that the Lay Huskers season is starting.  Secondly, It would appear that Clark and Sheppard are healthy enough to start.  I am extremely interested in seeing (whether hearing as I will not be at the game) how well Clark is able to move on the court, how she adjusts to Connie's style of play and how well she jells with her team mates.  If she is able to remain healthy enough to run the court, I believe she will be just as valuable of an addition to this years team as Sheppard will be.  The addition of another consistent 3 point shooter should open up the lane for Sheppard and company and her years of experience as a good college player can only help this young team.

So it was OK for Romeo to play in Australia and not in an exhibition?  Not sure I understand.

Might had to do with the lack of available guards for that trip  But I agree. The sooner the consequence is given after the behavior, the better.
