The talent is there, as evidenced by last season, for us to make it to the NCAA tourney.  I do think we're that good.  I suppose we can't totally compare last year to this year and assume the same results or better, because of factors like different opponents (home and away) different schedule, different coaches and different players.

I think we're in a mental rut, and it can happen to a lot better teams than us.  It happened to Wisconsin last year, on a much smaller scale.  We keep looking to Miles to come up with an offensive strategy to fix our offensive woes, and yeah it's his responsibility to figure it out, but I agree with Norm in that in reality there is only so much a coach can do.  Too many passed up shots indicates lack of confidence.

we have talented players, but unfortunately they are shooting much worse than last year and turning the ball over at a higher rate.

3 pt % last year. 33%.

this year. 29%

turnovers per game last year 11.

this year. 13.

steals per game last year. 7

this year. 6.

that doesn't seem like a huge difference, but it is when you consider that we've lost 3 games by 5 points or less.

regardless of what happens the rest of the season, next year should be our best chance to make a run. I think everyone will be back including petteway.

Kudos Norm, for this thread!   :)   A lot of great discussion and thoughts, all of them positive (not a 'negative nancy' among them). I'd give everyone contributing an automatic +1 if I could.

(I really didn't mean to give "Dimes' that down arrow (finger-twitch))  B)

I'm sure the coaching staff is tearing their hair out (all except Harriman, of course) trying to figure out how to right the ship and  get back to a higher level of play.   Defense has been stellar, but no matter how good it is, Defense won't win the game if you can't score!

Saw on FB a comparison for tonight's game and noticed our offense is ranked 296 by Kenpom.

That makes us the worst offense(statistically) in comparison to other power 5 conference programs.  Next closest is Texas Tech at 278.  I would much rather have a great defense over a great offense.  But, perhaps Miles screwed up in the offseason in hiring Molinari as opposed to someone who could breath some life into the program on that end of the floor.  I don't doubt that Molinari knows a thing or two about running an offense but everything that I read centered on his defensive coaching.

The numbers back up what you're seeing on the court: a mess

Did we overcompensate to start the season? Do we come out next year focusing on offense and then ratchet down on the defense as the season wears on?

For NU next season's offense seems to improve on talent with the addition of a pure shooting threat in White, ball-handling with Watson & rebounding with Morrow Jr. Will be very interesting to keep tabs on offensive efficiency next year in context of the past 3 under Miles & Co.
