Norm Peterson Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 I am greedy. I want Kevin Thomas too!!! I'm wondering whether it makes sense to take more than one more player in this class. As things stant at this instant, we'd have three ships to offer for next year. If we add an Atewe, that takes us down to two, unless we have some unscheduled attrition. I'd like us to have three spots to offer for next year because I think we can get in on the more elite players for next year instead of the sloppy seconds for this year. Think Fuller, Webster and Hawkins for '14. It might be a couple of bigs and a point or something like that, but that level of player (or possibly even better because we've offered some VERY good players and one or more of them might pan out, you never know.) Anyway, my thought process is I'd prefer to bring in one more guy this year and save the rest of the spots for the 2014 class.

Nothing against the kid...but it wouldn't surprise me to see Parker leave. Not sure where he fits in with Webster and Biggs coming in the next 2 years.

Same type of player to me. Not saying Atewe can't/won't be better... Just not sure how he's the type of player we haven't been able to land in 10 years. Considering the caliber of the schools that recruited the two....I wouldn't call them the same type of player.
Norm Peterson Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 True, we need point guards who can score and Benny hasn't shown that. Not sure Biggs is any better, though. We'll see. I just really want to see at least three spots available for 2014 recruits because I think that offers the best opportunity for upgrading the talent and if we sign Atewe, then we'll need to have some additional attrition because that would only leave 2 spots.

I know they have gotten in on some of the big name kids but where we sit with them come next fall is huge. Lets say we save one and dont get anything more than a couple 3 star players because we strike out on our top guys. Thats a second year we've hamstrung the team but not filling a roster. Im not saying we are in on kids this year that would be worth using all 5 schollies but it again goes back to my original line.
MandRHusker Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Guess i don't want to be short on bigs Norm. I think we will see at least one and maybe two leaving the program after this year. Benny was mentioned and I'm still wondering where Rivers fits after this year. Maybe I underestimate the progress he is making. I think Thomas can help us. He has length, can rebound and has a smooth shot. Regarding Biggs, he can score. Much stronger in that category than Parker. Much more athletic and assertive. A great penetrator with Gallegos ups. I am not sure how much progress he has made in learning to run the team. In the one practice I saw Biggs looked more like a scoring guard than a point guard. One practice is probably not enough but it is all I have to refer to.
Silverbacked1 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Okay here we sit with only 7 scholarships and of that only 4 who are 100% healthy, and we are talking about kids who are playing a lot leaving? If we talking about being a better team can we really talk about running guys off? Wouldn't it be nice to have a Benny Parker and David Rivers to come off the bench to help? Isn't that what depth is about? I would think that we would want as many of the guys here that will make it tough in practice and push guys so only the best are on the court, not just who we is healthy or next on the bench? I guess I really don't see anybody leaving, because they think they will play here or at least compete for a spot. Isn't that what we really want here? Lots of guys who have to fight to play each game, because the guys behind you might be as good? doc1394 1

I'm just specualting that those two players may make the decision themselves because they see diminished playing time. I hope it doesn't happen but it does happen on a regular basis in D1 ball.

Most guys dont expect to lose playing time to freshmen when they've been getting a lot of minutes and experience and the freshman coming in isnt exactly earth shattering in expecting them to start and be a star from day one.
MandRHusker Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Well, either way I hope we have room for Thomas. I'm just not confident we will have three big bodies ready to play next year without a fourth big man on the team. One other thing about Atewe. A recruiting analyst from Rivals said some schools who would have pursued Atewe may have backed off because the NCAA is investigating his school regarding scholastics.

I can't foresee Rivers leaving after this season. Playing time will be there for him because of a lack of size on this team. As for Parker, he'll be back next year, but I could see him leave after his sophomore season.
hskr4life Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 I could see Menke transfer to Doane. That is probably the only one after this year though... Silverbacked1 1

hskr4life Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 I could see Menke transfer to Doane. That is probably the only one after this year though... You think he could play for them? As good as Doane is, I think with Menke on their team, they are an NAIA National Title Contender. He just adds that much more to a team that Mr. Weeks has already done a fine job with. That combined with the fact that they were player and coach at Beatrice probably opens the door for Menke to transfer at any time. Silverbacked1 1
Norm Peterson Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 A lot depends on whether there's any premature attrition (i.e., guys leaving before they've exhausted their eligibility.) But even if we don't get the 5-star kids who have us listed for 2014, it seems like we sure ought to be able to snag a few guys on the level of Fuller and Hawkins or higher. I think, again, 2014 presents a better opportunity for higher level recruits than what's left in 2013. There might still be a diamond in the rough or two out there for this year but the selection will be better next fall and Miles will have had a full year to try to recruit them.
FredsSlacks Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 I'm wondering if Miles should have passed on Hawkins in favor of a big man. Hawkins looks to be the least impressive on film, and I don't really see how he is going to play much next year. That being said I still think you have to get another big man this year. I'd like to see Kevin Thomas added to this class because he seems like he could start right away at power forward. Webster, Gallegos, Fuller, Thomas, and Pitchford seems like a really solid lineup that could play at a very fast pace and score more than 40 points.

Have you paid attention to his recent games? He may turn out to be better than Fuller. I wouldn't write him off yet, sight unseen.
MandRHusker Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Anyone read the Rivals Atewe interview after his Husker visit? When asked about the fact that K State had secured the pledge of another big man, Atewe said that they were now out of it with him and that he was disappointed that they had not shown loyalty. The only reason I can think of that Atewe had not already committed to K State, and that he would say that K State had not shown loyalty, is if there is an academic issue. I have no inside info but it just makes sense to me. I'm not sure where he stands with academics now but I would not be surprised if we continue to recruit big men and don't see an immediate pledge from Atewe, despite his glowing comments regarding this weekends visit. Despite this speculation, I really hope we get Atewe!

With K-State passing on him and him being blown away by Nebraska I dont see him passing up the opportunity. I think he now realizes that if he waits too long to make a decision and try to visit everywhere that some of his options will be gone when all is said and done.
Silverbacked1 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 I thought I read on here some place that some are backing off of Atewe, because of the prep school he is at is starting to be looked at by the NCAA for not really being above board. Maybe I'm wrong. Isn't the kid from Texas who is sitting out much of the year from this school too? He got in trouble for a private workout or something didn't he. I feel sorry for these kids. Mostly those not from the States who come here to play basketball and are used by adults. Really sad.

I wouldnt read too much into the ordeal with Notre Dame Prep. None of the players that have come from there recently have had any problems. Duke also wouldnt inquire into a players service if the academics werent in order. ALL prep schools have come under fire recently about their academics, obviously some more than others, but until then theres nothing that is really saying Atewe will have any issues academically. MandRHusker Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Silverback, you probably read something from me. Yesterday there was a post by one of the Rivals recruiting analysts who speculated that some schools may have backed off Atewe because the NCAA was investigating Notre Dame Prep. I am certain that KambyMan knows much more about this than I do! Silverbacked1 1
Silverbacked1 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Thanks guys, I knew if I asked it would be answered. Kabango is from Canada correct? Is that where the tie in to Atewe is? Because there is a tie in correct?

TheKamdyMan Posted January 8, 2013 Author Report Posted January 8, 2013 So i just got done talking to my buddy that follows recruiting big time and lives in CT and goes to watch about 30-40 games a year with all the prep schools out there and plans on seeing ND Prep 2-3 times in the next two months. He said the issue with Notre Dame was with last years class. 2 players Myles Davis and Sam Cassell had issues with NCAA requirements and must sit this year. My friend said he doesnt think it has much necessarily to do with the school as maybe the players and they just happened to be at the same time. They are being talked about because again they have a player this year that will probably be ineligible in Jaylen Brantley but apparently hes been an academic risk for a few years which is why he has so few teams listed for him. I guess this is why people are shying away from players because of peoples fear its the school and not just the players failing. Silverbacked1 1
