No. 15 Big Red Brace for Bears in Battle of Unbeatens

The No. 15 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena for a tilt with the Northern Colorado Bears, Sunday November 30th. Tip-off between the Huskers (5-0) and the Bears (4-0) is set for 2 p.m. at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Nebraska trailed by as many as 16 points, but rallied down the stretch for a 71-66 women's basketball win over UCLA Friday afternoon to complete the sweep of three Pac 12 teams scheduled for the non-conference.

Rachel Theriot scored 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Big Red to their fifth straight win. Emily Cady added 18 points,Tear'a Laudermill added 15 points and Brandi Jeffery gave the Huskers four players in double figures with 11 points.

Meanwhile the Northern Colorado Bears (4-0) are enjoying their best start to a season since becoming a Division I school.  The Rams came from behind in the second half to win in the final minutes against Nebraska/Omaha Friday night to secure the win 67-58.

The Rams are coached by a bevy of former Kansas State coaches. Kamy Etheridge is now the head coach with Shalee Lehning, Deb Patterson and Kelly Moylan as her assistants. The Bears start four seniors and a junior. Seniors D’Shara Strange 16 ppg and Stephanie Lee 15.5 ppg lead the Bears in scoring. Kourtney Zadina a sophomore from Seward one of the first off the bench is averaging 9.3 points per game.

The Huskers have met Northern Colorado now 4 times through the years and have won every game played. Expect all players suited up for Nebraska to see extensive playing time.

22 – Amber Van Deudekom – 5’11 - Sr. - F – 3.8

Emily Cady will face former Seward High Bluejay now UNC Bear Kourtney Zadina. Kourtney was a sophomore when Emily was a senior at Seward.

Teara' Laudermill is Nebraska’s No. 1 active career three-point shooter with 109 makes.

Emily Cady and Hailie Sample have joined each other in the Huskers’ starting five for 105 consecutive games.

Nebraska’s top guard off the bench through the first four games, freshman Natalie Romeo missed the UCLA game with a stress reaction in her foot. She is not expected to play against Northern Colorado.

GAME NOTES:

This game was on the schedule before these UNC coaches were hired. Had it not been, I guarantee you we wouldn't be playing them today.

With all the shenanigans Coach Yori had to put up with in her early years with this coaching staff, I sure would love to see the Huskers get them down, step on their neck and not let up. You know like the game where they had a 25+ point lead on us, took out their starters, put in the bench only to put the starters back in a few minutes later and press full court because the margin of victory was diminished from where they wanted it. Or the scheduling conflict we had to go through with them in the WNIT tournament. Or all the negative recruiting we had to go through with them over the years.   Where do I stop?

Can you tell I don't care for this coaching staff!

..........But it won't happen our coach is above all that crap.

I agree on the coaching staff.  Deb Patterson is probably the coach I dislike the most.  In addition to the events that Row 6 talks about there was also the time that KState beat us in the last moments and Debby basically lead a little circle jerk at mid court and taunts our fans.   Or the time she was ejected and stood back in the tunnel and coached until the refs noticed her and told here to desist and she gave them the bird as she headed to the locker room.

I would wear that as a badge of honor Fast. You got under her skin and that is alright in my book.:)

Connie says it like it is, which I respect.  She said she  got out-coached today, and she was right.  I don't like the former K-State group, but they were outstanding today.  Really took us out of what we wanted to do offensively.  We got nothing coming out of timeouts.  They took advantage of match up problems.  We had to go big in the first 10 minutes of the second half after the postups; they then adjusted to that by taking us off the dribble.

It goes down as a "w" but it didn't look like we were prepared. Play like this next Wednesday against Duke and it will be a long night. Looked like we were a step slow in defending the paint and lost at times on the offensive side. The Huskers usually zip that ball around the key but this afternoon they would catch it and hold it letting the defense catch up before moving it on.

Lost count how many times we got caught behind a screen and lost our player cutting through the lane. We missed way to many layups, we've got to start connecting on those gimme buckets under the basket.

Not too often Rachel winds up with 25 points and only 1 assist. Emily finishes with a double double. both Hailie's and Tee's stat line's can be and should be a lot better. Sure could have used Natalie Romeo hope she ain't out too long.

Connie said that they had a practice last night after they got home from Cali and that was it for game prep of No Colorado.

But Northern Colorado played UNO Friday night, so they didn't have much time to prepare either

They were just out of sync, and looked tired from the trip to west coast. Missed lots of shots they usually make.

May have put the bench in too soon....(maybe  should have waited until second half).., and then had trouble regrouping, after NC got fired up.

Nice to see Smith finally get a little time on the floor. She looked nervous and a little lost.....but that's to be expected.

Hallie only took one shot.

Ugly but will still counts as a win. Move on to the next one...and get ready to rock !

No Colo. had Saturday where as the Huskers were on the road.

Do you suppose NC had this game circled on their calendar, and were maybe a bit more prepared?  I'm also concerned that maybe teams have decided to try and get Sample in foul trouble early, knowing that causes problems with our defense.  Hopefully the girls are getting in some shooting time before Wednesday.  I also wondered why Connie was subbing so freely in the first half.

My friends associated with the NC program said that they indeed had worked on Nebraska prep for awhile, so yes, your supposition is a good one.   It had to hurt them to come out nervous and get down 26-5.  Plus of the first 12 fouls, 10 were called on them.

However, as Connie said, the game ended up being about matchups, and we didn't come out well in those.  In her own words, she lost the chess match.  Other teams will use this film.  However, we have good coaches, and will adjust.
