NUdiehard Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 A few days ago I was flipping through the channels when the student section for the Kansas Jayhawks showed up on the screen. The students were going absolutely berserk during PRE-GAME introductions. Naturally, I automatically assumed this was a replay of a big time conference game from last year or some prior year. Yet, when I hit the "info" button on the remote, I was shocked to see that I was watching a live broadcast of an EXHIBITION game. The camera kept panning to the students, and the students were relentless in their enthusiasm and energy. When the game started, Kanas got a rebound and turned it into a transition bucket. It was nothing spectacular, not a thunder dunk or even a dunk. But the students went into an absolute frenzy. This continued throughout the time I watched. I will admit I did not watch the whole game, or even a majority of the game (I just couldn't get myself to devote 2 hours to another teams pre-season exhibition game), but it was clear from what I watched that the student section at Kansas "just gets it!" They treat ANY game, even an exhibition game, like it is the biggest game of the year. It did not matter that the game didn't even count for the record book. It didn't matter that the opponent was WAY overmatched. It didn't matter that everyone in the building knew it was going to be a blowout. They were supporting the team and players like it was a championship game. That energy had to be contagious, and it has to rub off on players and recruits. The Nebraska student section was good last year. But there is still a whole nother level out there for you if you want to go and strive for it! Quote
49r Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 They were just expending some pent-up frustration over having such an incredibly craptastic football team to root for. hhcmatt, Jadler, Silverbacked1 and 3 others 6 Quote
bobcat402 Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 If we can keep up our current progression, by next year we may develop the beginnings of a student section like that, student sections aren't built over time. Pitt, Kansas, Duke, sometimes Maryland those Student Sections took time to develop and create a reputation, and prestige. Quote
Nighthawk Posted November 7, 2014 Report Posted November 7, 2014 Was it just that it was an exhibition game or that it was a non conference/non Creighton game that made it seem like the student section was small. The sections behind the benches looked full from where I sit in the 200 level...but the area over by the band was pretty sparse. Quote

Let's see how they show up November 16. When I was a student in the Doc years, there were some non-conference games that less than 50 students showed up in total! Quote
uneblinstu Posted November 7, 2014 Report Posted November 7, 2014 I wouldn't expect the student section fill up except for Creighton, maybe Cincy and most conference games (once school is back in session. Quote

Seems like the ones at KU and NC (although it's questionable how many of them passed the test to get student tickets) and Duke and a lot of the top schools are full most of the season. Will be interesting to see how the place looks come the 16th for everyone. 10 thousand plus isn't a number to sneeze at when looking at the past attendance of being around the 5-6 thousand area. Right, but you haven't been able to buy a pair of tickets on huskers.com for Northern Kentucky for quite some time now. I did just check if singles were available, which it appears that some are. That must be what Sharpe was talking about. Quote
jimmykc Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 You should see the enthusiasm of the student section at KU football games. Of course both guys usually stop off at a bar before the game starts. Nighthawk, Silverbacked1, 49r and 2 others 5 Quote

They stopped selling season tickets, but they held back some tickets to sell on a single-game basis. For example, there are still tickets available to buy for Central Arkansas, Incarnate Word, etc. It's not quite correct to say that the whole season is sold out. Quote
