Maryland:

 

Maryland players and coaches talk about wanting to push the tempo beyond what Big Ten teams like (Iowa might beg to differ), but this is in some ways a very Big Ten team. Without Thomas, and Brown's breakout potential aside, it is a collection of very good players hoping that adds up to greatness.

Another core player for the Thunderbirds is Nebraska product Harlene Sidhu, also playing in her last season of eligibility. Sidhu’s basketball IQ is amongst the highest in the CIS, and she continues to excel in her post play. Last season she played with power and consistency, averaging 15.1 points per game, 8.2 rebounds and an outstanding 50.7 per cent field goal percentage — good for 10th in the CIS — in the 29 games she played. Her height and willingness to work constantly gives her the space needed to knock down long range or inside shots.

 

Sidhu is proud of how the team played this pre-season, but recognizes the team’s lack of consistency in the final minutes of their games, “We all need to be making smart plays and continuously be aggressive,” said Harlene.

Couple of interesting exhibition games this past weekend.

 

Penn St. needs a second half rally to defeat D-II Indiana University of Pennsylvania 75-71. And BYU our second round opponent in last years NCAA tournament lost to NAIA Westminster College of Salt Lake City 59-54.

 

Another interesting game of note. The Utah Utes who visit the "Bob" to take on the Huskers Nov. 23rd lost their exhibition game last night 67-61 to DII Alaska Anchorage.

Michigan St:

 

The Lansing State Journal previews the B1G.

 

Outlook: Star Jordan Hooper is gone, but the Cornhuskers have a strong cast back in a quartet of seniors (Cady, Laudermill, Jeffery and Sample) and a junior point guard in Theriot. That group should have Nebraska, a preseason top 25 team, in contention for a Big Ten title. Nebraska has question marks outside its strong group of returners with seven newcomers to the program.

Ohio State:

 

Wondering how Ohio St was going to do with so few players?

 

The Buckeyes are so short-handed that McGuff even reached out to one of last year's starters, Amy Scullion, who redshirted after tearing up a knee her freshman year and decided to call it a career at the end of her junior season so she could bow out with her classmates. Even though she's in medical school at Ohio State, she'll practice and play when she can fit it in

From the Columbus Dispatch they preview the Big Ten women's conference and explain a little on how they see each team performing this season. They have the Huskers sitting in 3rd.

 

Nebraska: The defending Big Ten tournament winner has four starters returning led by junior point guard Rachel Theriot and senior forward Emily Cady. Co-conference player of year Jordan Hooper is a major loss.

 

 

 

1. Can the rest of the Big Ten keep newcomers Maryland and Rutgers from dominating the conference?

Iowa and Nebraska have the offensive chops to make title runs this season; Michigan State plays Rutgers-style defense, which means the Spartans are a contender.

Northwestern:

 

Coach Joe McKeown picked up his 600th career victory with a win over Kent State (ironically, his alma mater) last night.  The Wildcats are 3-0, but have only played against Chicago State (CHICAGO IS NOT A STATE ), Hampton, and Kent State (KENT IS NOT A STATE ) so that they have not really been tested yet.

I like this team, Except for when they play The Huskers. I thought that they would do better than they did last year. Just didn't get some breaks, So maybe they can improve on it and have a better year.

Not B1G related but still worth mentioning. Teammate of the year or should I say "week" award goes to USC freshman Chyanne Butler. The freshman from Orange County CA, has left the team due to the "lack of playing time" after 4 games.

Last Saturday, Northwestern upset #18 DePaul at their place in a 97-91 fifty-minute thriller.  The 'Cats are currently 5-0 heading into their matchup in Blacksburg tomorrow night.

The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team suffered a major blow as coach Bobbie Kelsey said Saturday that fifth-year senior Michala Johnson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Johnson, who earned first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors in her first season with the Badgers last year, suffered the injury early in the game at Miami on Thursday

Wow, that's too bad.  She is a great player.  We are right on the edge of whether she can get a hardship year.  (If she's played in less than 20% of games she can get one)

Rachel Banham is eligible for a medical hardship waiver that would allow her to play for the Gophers women’s basketball team next season, a University of Minnesota spokesperson said Friday.

 

 

 

NCAA bylaws state that a player can compete in only 30 percent or less of a team’s scheduled games to be eligible for a medical waiver, which allows for another full season. Including the Big Ten tournament — which counts as only one game — Minnesota has 31 games on its schedule. Thirty percent of 31 is 9.3, but since the NCAA rounds up decimals, Banham is allowed as many as 10 games — which she played.

 

To receive the waiver, Minnesota needs to submit documentation and a request but wouldn’t do so until the end of the season. Banham is mulling her options, the university spokesperson said.

So in the first first article the guy writes that Theriot is shooting 96 % from the charity line. The he writes that Michigan's Siera Thompson is shooting a league leading 96% from the charity line HUH!!!!! And I'm guessing NorthWestern will be better than 9th. And how much longer will Bobbi Kelsey be around at Wisconsin?
