Finally, in case you were wondering:

Not to put a damper on things or anything but...the students won't be sitting as close in the front row as that picture was taken. From all of today's pics it appears that the pull-outs on the student side were pulled all the way out in the 'flush' 10 row arrangement. When game day comes around and the 8 row arrangement is used to allow students to stand, it won't be pulled out all the way. So whatever distance 2 rows takes up. I'm guessing another 4-5 feet further back for the students.

Toured PBA tonight for the first time since its been mostly completed. A couple thoughts here. To put it simply, a great facility. Nothing is left out. The building has everything. From student entrance to players entrance to coaches locker room to drink prep room. Yes, a room labeled 'drink prep room'. Attached to the locker room, complete with ice machine, pull out hose with several huge tub sinks. It's the Gatorade prep room. I guess all arenas might have one, I had just never thought of it until tonight.

The 3rd level is way way way up in the air. If you're up there you're going to have a great perspective. But man that is high in the sky.

I took some pictures and made some observations. One topic of concern has been exactly how close to the action will the students actually be. We've heard numbers. 6 feet. 8 feet, etc. I sat in that front row and it feels pretty close. They did have the pull outs all the way out in the 10 row orientation with a railing in front of the first row. For the games there will be no railing and there will only be the 8 rows. I don't know how the pull outs work. I don't know if when they pull them out to the student orientation if that means the front row ends up further back then where it was tonight or if it comes out to the exact position it was tonight. I did some measuring. I paced off the distance from the railing in front of the first row to the back of the bench and came up with 12 feet. The first row is another couple feet back from the railing so maybe 14 feet total if you're in the front row. I really hope the students don't go even further back with the 8 row orientation. If they are you're talkin close to 20 feet back. Having said all of this, it still feels close and maybe it feels closer once things such as Gatorade coolers, equipment, or a 2nd row of bench gets put behind the current bench.

I did take my shoes off and waddle out on the floor with all the kids. I made my freethrow and avoided any more strenuous activity.

Pictures coming.

Off topic to a point...but what has everyone thought of the concert announcements to date? I'm kind of 50/50 split on them.  I think they are great for the arena and great for the city and for anyone that wants to see the bands...however on the flip side there has been no announcement that has really excited me personally. I'm still waiting for the first hard rock/metal concert to be at the arena.

Ask and ye shall receive

LOL!  Please don't tell me you view that as hard rock.  I'm still waiting.  I'm talking the stuff they play on the Blaze at a minimum.

Obviously pulling your leg.

I'm sure Slipknot (or whoever) will make it here soon enough if they can fill up that size arena and can be booked.

Nice work, aj.  How did you get in early?

Also, it looks like the floor is unfinished the way they have it.  Isn't there some sort of border that they could put around the edge of it so that it doesn't look like a raw edge where you can see the underlayment?  Like a red border with a beveled edge that goes down to the concrete?  Something odd about the way there's just no finished edge to that.

space between students and bench

I've seen pictures of this section that show a riser in front of the first row when it's pushed in for the student configuration (they are in the renderings and seat charts, too).

To be honest, I don't think the front of the student section is going to be much, if any, further back than it appears here.

haha!  yeah I kind of figured that was the case. People keep saying "can fill up that size arena" and "what rock bands can fill a 15,000 seat arena".  I know you didn't say that last quote but it was brought up on facebook.  My response was I really don't see Jeff Dunham selling 15,000 seats...and from what I heard for the Women's basketball they have a curtain that they can drop to cover the upper part of the arena. So I doubt that selling out of the arena is that big an issue.

Yes the rail in front of the first row goes away with the student configuration and they place a step down riser as you have described.

Last night was the Mortensen construction open house. One last chance for all the workers to stroll through before the opening. I happen to be related to someone who worked down there so I snuck in. I would imagine a beveled edge would be added to the outside of the flooring. I had more pics but they wouldn't upload fr some reason.
