As I was listening to KFAB this morning, they had a news story about former UNL basketball player Tony Cato.  Here's a link to the story WOWT Channel 6 ran.

For the life of me, I do not remember Tony Cato playing basketball for the Huskers.  Can someone spur my memory?

Regardless, good for him.  The guy shows guts and determination.

Cip,

You appear to be around as long as me....born in the baby boomer era...I do not remember Tony Cato either...nor is Cato found on www.huskers.com except for a track and field player...not a letter winner in bball...and certainly not a star. Some facts appear to be askew.

Still an interesting story...but it makes you wonder.

According to the media guide, there have been no players with the last name of Cato that have lettered in basketball at NU.

He didn't play at UNK either.  Couldn't find an all-letterwinners list for UNO.

So did this guy just make up that he played for Nebraska?

Probably.  He also got hit by some drunk asshole with no insurance and is still partially paralyzed because of it.

Drunk assholes are bad enough but the ones with no insurance really take the cake.

Perhaps Anthony Cato had been more of a practice player for Moe Iba's squad...

Did you say "Gallo" with a "G"?  No, it's Jerry CALLO with a "C."  Jerry Gallo's dead.

That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection.

Did you say "Utes"?

I loved Fred Gwynne.  Especially in that movie.  Did you know he also wrote and illustrated a pretty darned good children's book?

Yeah, just to be clear I was in no way trying to diminish his story, was just asking.

It's a valid point.  Possibly he has received greater charity by making up a connection to the U.  Given his circumstances I don't have a problem if this is the case.
