Big Ten team news...(Hoopla's picks complete p. 17)
redsteve replied to whoopdeedoo's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
If both of them have been given the proper training and coaching for the last couple of years, they could help filling right away into Issies old spot. Both have decent size and quickness. But I suspect not much 4 play in the paint coaching. Not as a center but versatile forward play. Wouldn't be to surprised to see maybe Moriarty start/play the 4 next year. Really want to see Potts play here..from the little i've seen on video.....she could be another 4-Issie type with learning/coaching up...maybe? Have to remember Issie (and Jazz) were part of the Aussie national teams for a couple of years before she/they ever got here to play US college basketball. They played in some international tournaments. Way higher level than US club H.S. teams. They had way more high level training on skill sets, position play, team schemes in offense and defense, etc etc etc. They are long time dedicated basketball players. We'll miss them a lot when they finally move on. High quality people and players. The type you want on your team. -
There must be something that makes three players want to leave. and like Cazz says...maybe cleaning house is the answer but for a young proven quality player (RS freshman) like Wilke to leave? Sometimes a new coach and an existing player just aren't on the same wave link... so to speak. Be nice to be a fly on the wall...as has been said a million times.

OT (Barney Cotton w/Sip, Jake, and Bill)...
redsteve replied to whoopdeedoo's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
Always thought a lot of Barney. He did about everything (position coach) that he was asked. Player on offense and defense, head coach, position coach, offensive coordinator, etc etc etc. Brought his kids here to play. True Husker for life. High character guy. Hope he recovers and enjoys his retired life. He said in the interview he really misses working with the players. No surprise. -
Like most here, not an Iowa fan. But as a fan of basketball they really were impressive. Last night they were on fire. They executed like clockwork from the get go. Clark had 40, which is not rare, but the supporting cast was on fire too. Everything worked or them. And they played together as a team really well. OK, it's the last time I'll compliment them. Volleyball...does Iowa have a Volleyball team ?

PORTAL: Pretty sure the women’s basketball portals are open March 13 - May 11, so some decisions must be made on who's leaving NU (for whatever reason), and who's not. if you need position players you can't wait (if you need to pursue someone) There's already good players available. Go talk to Ruhl if you need help. Louisville took advantage of it last season, and were able to draw in good players, as did other high level teams. If we do in fact lose the Aussies (and Sam of course), there's no time to wait. If we don't stick our foot in the portal, in that case it's a head scratcher. Three new and unknown freshman....new to college level play, probably will have a learning curve that could take a lot of games.

The B1G is representing itself exceptionally well this year.

We must recruit (or transfer) players that play fast, and are excellent ball handlers. Have thought that a long time. Watching WNIT, and NCAA's is really apparent how fast many better teams play. We look a like we're a couple of steps slower. And not many good teams rely on the 3 to keep them in the game. Sure many shoot some 3's to, but most with quick kids attacking the paint (in many ways) in concert with some perimeter shots. All have serious defense schemes, and play D hard. Utah, Louisville, and of course Maryland, So Carolina, etc etc, all have fast paced play. All are effective the paint, as well as sort 10-15 foot shooters. LSU is all score by their bigs at the basket. Felt bad for the Utah player that could have won the game against LSU. Has two free throws with about 3 seconds left and she air balled the first, and missed the second. You could see in her eyes she was paralyzed with fear and completely choked. Broke down on the bench and was crying. Anyway, hear that Coaches? :)

We're a long way away before next season and lots of water will go under the bridge. So won't give a lot of thought about it....lots of time until next summer/fall. A lot will happen in between time. But like said, will Coach visit the portal ? We need another Issie type forward... finding another with her type of skill set are far and few between. Maybe a freshman will emerge. Will have to be a lot of chips falling in the right places, or we could have a tough next season. Every team loses players, and gains new ones every year..... no matter what, we'll be a different team. .....If the Aussies don't come back, we'll be real different. Might even be one to maybe enter the portal ? But will watch for the next several months for the pieces to fall into place. It's pretty unpredictable putting a team together for next all season. Last year was more predictable...had mostly the same people coming back.

Don't care when or where it happens. Before, during, or after a game. This thug stuff (mens or womens) must be put to a stop. Have no use, or tolerance for it. It's gone to far. Throw a few off the team, out of games. Out of leagues, or tourneys, and it will work its self out quickly. The Memphis Schutes may have been charged with assault ? If so...good.

Tough loss. On the one hand we fought hard, but just seemed to be a little off shooting. 38% The loss of Sam and Allison ultimately probably made some difference. It's tough that we lost two key players this year. So we had to adjust, and others did step up when needed. Lots of headaches this year, heads in your hands... and stuff happening by the refs, etc etc. But tons of fun things to. Had some good wins against good teams. But we were determined tonight and gave it all the team had. KU got a couple of breaks in the later part of the game that helped them. The women deserve a lot of credit for their hard work, and toughness by putting it all on the line, no matter what..all year. They have put on a great show. Hope the aussies can come back ! I've certainly enjoyed it all....already doing mental gymnastics on what next years line up might look like. GBR !!
-
Missing Sam and Allison W unfortunately, may be the difference. Hopefully both the Kendall's, Hake, and Maddie hopefully can fill the gap. The bench has been looking improved recently. Or it might be a long night. To bad it's not on a neutral court. We definitely have a good chance. The super 16 is down to the better teams. We're one of those teams, and on any given night we're pretty darn good.
-
Yes, too bad we don't have another tough center that can play the position with the grit she has. She leads our team..... and the entire Big Ten in rebounding. And is second in big ten with double doubles, 15...one behind Catlin Clark. Even with getting double teamed much of the time, she's near the top of the team in scoring. Also in blocks. The center for Kansas is about 6-6 so will be a tall order for anyone to slow her down.
-
Kansas will be out for revenge. Plain and simple. They're at home. A tough place to play in any event. We'll need all hands on deck and at full go.
-
We're the first team in the WNIT SUPER 16 !!

Thought so for two years ....Moriarity is not seeing the floor enough. She plays fast, can handle the ball and shoot. Sometimes I thought she is just to fast a player for our sort of a half court offense. Anyway...great game Kendall. The other Kendall played well too ! Awesome Issie !! double - double (only player on both teams) UNI just was too slow for us. We play a bit quicker than them. Our height was a factor too. And.....our defense was effective. We defended their inside scorers well. And later we defend their 3. Our home crowd finally got into it and made a big difference. We just play so well at home. Nice job NU fans...and team !! Suppose there's any chance we'll get another home game?
-
Wouldn't be surprised if a WNIT rep. had something to say to UNI at the half. And them getting into the NU bench might have finally trip a trigger for the WNIT. That's an unwritten rule in any sport. The other teams bench is off limits. "Clean up your act or you'll never see a WNIT game again" Maybe not said quite like that but, whatever was said...it was probably close.

Slow starts are a disaster for everyone in the tourneys. .... Quick starts haven't consistently been our greatest asset this year. Really, really hard to comeback against these good teams. The parody is even more evident this year. NCAA's and the WNIT. Good starts are in us, so.....need it, and of course reasonable 3 shooting and rebounding, no turnovers, lots of in the paint points, lots of fast break points, many assists, lots of blocked shots....can't think of anything else right off the top of my head.

Watched the Iowa St game today. They lost by less than 10 I think. It was one of those games where one team gets ahead by 15 early, and from then on they both trade baskets for the rest of the game, and Iowa St never fully overcame the difference. They weren't very successful from the 3...don't know if they shoot it much normally. ?? But did like Iowa St's game style. Played really hard all 40 min., but didn't look like they ever worked up a sweat. Definitely in good BBall shape. Very active guards....all were pretty quick could drive into the paint and ball handle. Fast pace but not chaos. Never sat still on the offense. Constant movement. Anyway, wish we had that sense of urgency all game long. See why they win a lot. Looked a little like Indiana. Michigan plays LSU. next. Expect LSU to real tough for Michigan to able survive. But there's been upsets in all these men's and women's tourneys. Fun to watch :)

Huskers.com says Sunday's game will be on BTN+

Not a pretty win, but a win. In the first half it looked like they haven't played in several months. But got it done in the second half. Finally the coaching staff woke up and changed the pace of the defense. So why we haven't all year? Refs were not great When the other team gets lots of their own offensive rebounds it can mean they aren't hitting their shots. But their big was a bull to their credit. We hit about 45% and they about 30 shooting...the last I looked. OK, on to the next one.

Cut and paste from my other post.... Done some brief research... Missouri State is no slouch. They're well coached (she was an assistant at Notre Dame and Duke for about 10-15 years before becoming head coach at another school before Missouri St) I think she (coach Cunningham) was at Notre Dame as an assistant when Jess Shepard was there..(natl championship). (trivia....she played at and is Notre Dame's all time leading scorer) They have some quick slashing guards, good rebounding. (watched a clip of short video) They have won lots of games this year, and also in their past history. Common opponent : They lost to Drake by a few points. We lost to Drake by about 18. We must be ready for this one. Edit: Watched the player interview with Sam and Alexis last night....not getting a great vib about them being in WNIT. Hope I'm imagining it.

According to Creme, Nebraska was in the second group of 4 teams that were out of the NCAA . Had we won the Minn and Mich St games near the end of the season, and at least one B1G tourney game...... we could have been real close to making it. You can't lose 3 games at the end of season. Just killed us. For what ever it's worth we did have a real tough schedule......but we didn't win some of the games "we should have won" WNIT Almost a sure thing if that's possible to say. But don't want to hex them. We'll see in a few minutes.

2023 F Jessica Petrie 6-2, Australia is Nebraska
redsteve replied to Red Don's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
Does that mean Jazz and Issie will be back ? That's what the second dillon771 says :) doubt it :) But another experienced Aussie is welcomed ! -
The whole post season thing is good reward if you want to call it that, for the team, and the fans. Would guess UNL might "buy" a home game for the WNIT if it's possible to do it. (If we have a proper seed/situation to get the chance) We might be a higher seed in WNIT so..... NCAA's are another story in our case, without a very high seed, almost no chance for home game..... even if we got in for some reason. The last two losses may have cooked our goose. Actually hope the men might get into NIT too. They need the boost for some confidence and pride for all their work. They've came pretty far this year. Hardly a top 25 team, but have made positive strides.
