John Cook comments about Maggie Mendelson playing basketball
redsteve replied to HUD's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
On one blocking jump in the middle, Jackson leaped so high that the top of the net, was about even with her arm pits as has been said else where...but she was that high. The whole freshmen class of 5 is absolutely outstanding. They looked like 2nd+ year college players. They all left HS early to enroll in Jan. (like Maggie did) Maggie has improved over last year...volleyball. It's not new to her now. She's up to speed...not kind of timid. Harper Murray may be the next super star. Reminds one of Jordon Larson. Good for volleyball in the state. The outdoor match will be unreal. -
Is assistant coach Tom G. moving on or retiring?
redsteve replied to Neb Nets's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
Did he tell me directly, of course, no, but by the same token, he has already done that in football, basketball and several other mens and womens sports since he came here. Getting assistant coaches, and head coaches replaced. And to turn your statement around, what proof do you have...that he didn't ? Again, it can't be ignored, we know he has already done it in many sports at NU in the short time he's been here. And you say Goehle may be tired of coaching, ...how do you know? If you'all really might think Athletic Director Alberts is doing nothing with the women's basketball structure.....sorry, but just don't buy that thought process. You have to ignore the obvious. That's just the way I see it. Don't want or expect everyone to agree. So it is what it is. -

Just the kind of thing hoped would happen. Been predicting it would go this way. Yes, Alberts at work more than likely. Seemed like he wasn't tackling women's basketball, until many of the other sports were "realigned". Coach Goehle has always seemed like a great guy. Wish him well. His heart was obviously in the right place. His number probably just came up, and it was time to move on for both parties. May or may not be the end of Alberts "influence"on the women's team. Wouldn't be surprised he expects better production next season....and then we'll see. We may see some other things we have been talking about. -
Big Ten team news...(Hoopla's picks complete p. 17)

Not bore everyone.....but maybe the coolest thing I ever saw back in the Nee 90's was by Eric Piatkowski. (he played in the NBA for 10-15 years as I recall) Piatkowski was maybe the best pure shooter I ever saw at the time. He could bomb 3's from anywhere. One night, and I don't recall who the other team was, but he banked in a long three (right in front of the other teams bench) Their bench just started laughing at Piatkowski......thought it was so funny. So the next time down the floor.....Piatkowski got to the exact same spot on the floor (by their bench)....and banked in another three.... in the same spot. He just turned and looked at their bench, and trotted back down the floor. ...Their silence was hilarious. The coolest in your face deals.... and he never said a word. Never forget it. -

Agree completely...I watched him play many times back in the 90's when we had season tickets for a number of the Nee years.....Tyronn Lou, Venson Hamilton, Cookie Belcher....some great years in NU basketball. Trivia: Did you know Danny Nee played high school basket ball in NY (Manhattan I think it was), and his teammate was ....Lou Alcindor...might know who he is. -

Markowski was 19th, based largely and probably, because of her being the rebounding leader in the B1G. She's a force on the boards. The rest of the league sure tries to double team her a lot. Really wish she/we had an experienced "big" coach that can teach her more of the ins and outs of playing the post. The potential is there to go further. I remember when Czinano was a freshman she looked lost...now with 4 years of real coaching she turned into a very serviceable center. After that little "skirmish" with Williams, when she benched Alexis for the start of the game...things haven't been quite the same with Markowski. Hope whatever it was...will work itself out over the summer. -

From what I understand she commited now because she may have gotten shut out at Iowa because they have almost reached their (4) limit of 2024 takes. She was going to commit (to anyone...at a later date) Iowa's run to the finals, has put them another step to a high level of recruiting. (yes they carry a 14-15 full roster that can play if needed) They could get like NU's volleyball....,can only take so many so you better commit right away. Yikes ! -
Newcomers: Because of the loss of Sam and Issie..... If the three incoming freshman can be as effective as Markowski and Weidner were, when they came as true rookies..... wouldn't that be huge. Even with the portal. (but hope the staff isn't banking on it to be our saviors.)
-
Holding my breath that we'll get someone, Need a power forward, etc. etc There are a lot of good players available. But still don't get any vibes we're trying to get a portal recruit(s). Would love to be proven wrong. Being a mid pack team, even in the B1G, doesn't help entice a proven talent. But, hopefully we can make a positive change through the portal. ...and with some good new freshmen, that look good on paper anyway, we could be at least as capable as we are currently. ....If that makes you happy. Getting Weidner back might/will be huge, looking at the big picture. Hoiberg, with all the related news every day, is obviously going full guns in the portal. Like we've said a million times...the women's BBall silence, is deafening.

Blider has done what you want your coach to do. Bluder has been there a very long time, and after years of trial and error, she has put together her system. She recruits the type of players that fits that system. Scorers that can out score the other team. There is a offensive schemed system. Aggressive and excellent learned execution. Mental toughness where you think your better than everyone else. She has that game "attitude" that some find abrasive, and her players learn it from her. Bluder doesn't discourage it. Iowa's not unique, most teams are a reflection of the head coach. And Bluder doesn't teach tough defense, stay on your man, but don't foul. (or her top 5 scorers will be on the bench) She play's the starters most of the minutes, and 3 or 4 subs that don't usually play lots of minutes. At Iowa you wait your turn. (most schools are like that) Yesterday, Iowa's defense lost it for them. One can argue about the refs, technicals, blah, blah....but LSU scored 58 or 59 in the first half. That was pretty much it really. I thought the ref's were pretty accurate, and called the stuff that happened. Some say "let them play". Games get out of control these days when that's the norm. Iowa got called for stuff they have gotten away with a lot. Ironic where Iowa played maybe their best defense all year against So Car, but went back to their old defense scheme yesterday and lost because of it. Feast or famine. Anyway this season is over. Focus now is back to our own team. It will be quiet for a while, unless we pursue the portal. For some reason just don't think that's what we'll do. The media doesn't talk much about women's BBall during the summer. It's like a bear's winter hibernation. So, I'm going to turn on my lawn sprinkler on, and go pick up my mower that's in the shop for it's 3 year tune up/fix up, and the blade sharpened. Going to the spring game in a few weeks. Life goes on. Sorry this got so long. GBR

Don't see anything racial about it, at all. Clark did it before to another player, so Reese gave it back. Hey, players take notes.... when another player is trash talking, or doing what Clark does, it was very disrespectful.. So Reese returned the favor. She didn't say a word to Clark. Not classy, sure, ....but again, pass BS out and you get it back. As long as it's not fist fights, etc...it is what it is.
-
Iowa's going to be a completely different team next year., even with Clark. They lose almost all their starters (except Clark). Lots of young ones on the bench, some good talent among them. Later in the season if they jell, might be a decent team.....but that's a long way down the road.
-
Clark only got returned, what she has dished out many many times. Dish it out...expect it might come your way in return. So, no problem
-
Like her or not Mulkey now has 4 national championships. Did it with LSU in about 3 seasons as Coach. Thought a big factor was Iowa getting called for lots of the sneaky fouls they usually don't get called for. So they started to foul out. This may have been the best chance Iowa may get for a long time. And...obviously the LSU quick bigs, perimeter 3's and 15' shooting and defense. 102 points, even Iowa can't keep up with that. (or 99% of all NCAA teams)

Iowa losses !!! 102-85 Yea !!!

Where would Iowa finish in the big 10 without Clark
redsteve replied to Fastbreaker's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
OK mid pack -
Clark and Chizno (whatever) are both with 2 fouls in 1St half. LSU is shooting the eyes out of the basket...wow Mulkey ...clown suit...geeeze

redsteve replied to Fastbreaker's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
No.. All depends on who replaces Clark....McCabes lacking in game experience...let alone big game experience...no -
Refs are calling everything ..even light touches...a little crazy. Iowa is getting called for stuff they usually get away with.

NCAA Championship game today....... So does Iowa use the same defense retiple team defense today? Or ? (Surprising win by Iowa by playing real defense....now that's a shocker) Credit to Iowa's staff...it worked) And what will Mulkey do with their offense? Does she expect the So Car in the paint triple team like Iowa used Fri, or something else. LSU will have the advantage of seeing the triple team thing....they have seen what it can do. LSU's offense is different than So Car. LSU's bigs are pretty mobile and don't just stay by the basket. May be harder to defend against. LSU's scheme isn't like So Car in the respect the big will just stand by the basket. Look for LSU to try to prove a point...you can't do to us what you did to So Car. Let's see what Mulkey has in mind after watching the So Car game. This is going to be interesting. Don't think I'm ready to crown Iowa just yet.

One more thing....listen in LSU I noticed that when Clark drives to the basket.....right side (75% of the time maybe), she does it a lot when bringing the ball down the floor. (or from a 1/2 court corner) The rest of the Iowa offense clears out the lane and moves away from the basket...taking the defenders with them....then Clark hits the gas straight to the basket,,,,the defender is a step behind and it's all over. Got lots of points off that. She'll also sweep around the top of the key. Going to the right side, from the left... hits a lay up. She hits it lots of ways. She does travel a lot when pivoting..got called maybe once last night, and she travels a lot going off the dribble. Picks up both feet when moving off the stand still. She's the star now....so a no call One more ....man, they are all whinners. I didn't travel.... I didn't foul...they fouled me ! They're worse than I am.

The more I think about it....we really need players at all positions. Jazz leaves next year so need a point guard to develop, we don't have a lot of 4's. Need to prepare for future years by roster management. Back ups that can take over for injuries, graduations, etc etc. Some spots more than others. You can go down the line. Every team has the same issues, but some manage it better than others. Recruiting is bigger than ever before. Must improve the skill sets of newbies recruited.
-
Not withstanding Clark.... That game kind of shows a team that is organized, plays together, and adjusts as the game goes along...VS a team that has relied on high level skilled players, and "big" bigs, to offset the lack of real designed offensive (and defensive) schemes. Never looked like they ran a designed play all night. Their 6-7 big stayed at the very bottom of the key the whole game, and with Iowa's triple team, SC couldn;t get the ball in to her....they never adjusted. Iowa was kind of the opposite. They have played together (starters) along time, and watching a few of Iowa's game in a row.... saw the same plays ran over and over. (game to game) Everyone on Iowa's team knew where everyone else was pretty consistently. Few turnovers, lots of assists. Probably knew they were going to be out rebounded so planned accordingly. So Car, surprisingly had very few 3 and short 15 ft shooters, and for the most part their offensive game was within 5 feet from the basket. Made them pretty much predictable. Iowa had put together a triple team defense in that same zone. It gave SoCar fits all night. They never even attempted to change. Don't know who on Iowa's staff put that together, but it pretty much won the game for them. Although Iowa did get away with a lot of fouls, hammering So Car at the basket. Refs let them play apparently. So now expect the same kind of game, and see Iowa probably wining it all. LSU doesn't have the same level of skilled players as So Carolina. But they are a little different style team than So Carolina. Maybe have a bit more diverse offense.

Jazz is the difference maker for next season, plain and simple. Otherwise were in for a tough next season. Just not optimistic after losing Sam and Issie. Hate to say it.....And it will probably be another .500-.600 year anyway (with the current roster and the 3 current new commits. But just adding Weidner and Markowski made a huge difference when they came in as freshmen. So freshman can matter. Must have Weidner back. Hope for her sake she will be Okay. Regrettably but we should look to replace the ones that continue to not be able to play. Open up the roster with more recruits and/or portal players. Fill out to 15 or so players that can actually play on the court. And add to practice environment for that matter. I'm for taking another approach to how the roster is managed...not that it means anything to anyone. Just disappointed how last season progressed. Done whining JAZZ IS STAYING !!

My predictions...make fun of them if you wish (I bet the farm on this)...maybe NCAA tourney 1. Iowa vs So Carolina ...... South Carolina's defense will prevail and beat Iowa (this year may be Iowa's best chance to win it all) 2. LSU vs Virginia Tech......See this as a toss up, but predict LSU....maybe FINALS South Carolina over either LSU or Virginia Tech WNIT Kansas to win it all (we had our chance)
