OUCH....how about a dose of reality coming to our house.
-
Fixed it huskerfrank...but yes you right...not taught how to correctly shoot layups, and how to finish layups. shoot short jumpers (we rarely do) etc etc
-
We shot 35%, ....they shot 55% overall You can debate all kinds of other stuff, but when your that outclassed scoring....the games over. Our 3 shooting was 19%...them 47%. But liked our efforts. Fought hard, did the best we could. It just won't happen when your shooting doesn't match the other efforts. Nice crowd. Congrats to everyone involved. The girls toughed it out, no matter the odds. They should keep their heads up after that effort.

Different offensive and defensive schemes by two different teams. Each are doing it how the coaches have planned. Positioning of the other players affect how you can make passes.

PORTAL STUFF I tend to not get too wound up about the portal, when it comes to women's basketball. There's a million different factors that can make or break your chances at getting a better player than you currently have. In general rough numbers, only about 25-30% are moved to a better situation than they left. About the same percentage just the opposite, and many don't get picked up at all so go to Jr College, or Div 2 or 3 2021-2022 Stats Total transfer out 1,331 ALL CLASSIFICATIONS Grad transfers 386 341 D-1 schools had at least one transfer Power 5 ONLY 65 schools transfer out 269 transfer in 182 so about 1/3 didn't get to a better situation into another Power 5 school, and end up at lower Div 1, 2 or 3 school Non P5 out 1062 in 643 Lastly....A small percentage return back to same school. These stats can be off a little....just quick research. What's all mean...? There were only 182 Power5 transfers in. So those that transfer either requested to contact a school, or were recruited to transfer from the portal. Mostly the top Power 5 schools can get highly rated transfers. They have superior recruiting ability, are top 25 rated schools. Example: Ohio State is on that list, does it a lot. The very best power 5 schools can get the pick of the litter so to speak. (and does so every year.) So are we a top 25 rated school, are we a top recruiting school? Are we a desired destination program now? etc etc Trying to be realistic. The pickings are pretty thin. We obviously have not been recruiting transfers. It seems we just haven't tried particularly. Will their be a change of heart ? There's lots more involved....this is a quick look. AND to add some perspective......there were about 412,000 high school girls basketball players last year

Prefer to stay way from criticizing individual UN players. These are 17-20+ girls that I have to believe they're doing the best they can with the tools God gave them, and the coaching they have received over their lifetime. Players that get to Div. 1 level haven't just got off the bus. Sure some are more productive at certain tasks, than others. Can that really be a surprise to anyone? The coaching deal is a whole different subject. At this level their paid big bucks to do a job. Recruit, team management, teaching, game management, roster stuff, spokesman, etc etc etc

By age, and class level MM's supposed to be in high school. I've seen her US national team Basketball play. She didn't look the same as she has now. Confidence was way higher. She didn't have a "normal" college freshman summer of basketball preperation......to get up to the speed of college basketball. It has hurt her progress more than I thought it might. It seems she hasn't caught up to the intensity and speed of the college game, to the point it all slows down to her. I kind of see it as just not playing enough. Put her in for two minutes then take her out. Play maybe less than 10 min at best. (4 min today) Who could improve in that scenario? Hope she comes back next season. Believe she jump up a step or two. She's got to much BBall IQ to do otherwise. Also we miss Weidner because of her aggressiveness, offensively and defensibly.....but a big deal ..we miss her consistent 10-15 pts per game.
-
We only had 4 that scored consistently. Issie, Sam, Jazz, and Alexis (18 pts 18 rebounds) very few from everyone else. Very few pts. driving to the basket. Don't seem to be deep enough with quick off the dribble guards.. Study the box score data. Interesting that Mich. subs played more minutes (than our subs) and scored at a good pace. Depth plain and simple. And just by observation, Mich usually only substituted one player at a time....keeps the team consistency in play when you aren't subbing 3 or 4 at a time. Anyway, we gutted it out and played pretty well after the slow start. (partly a result of MIch high pressure defense.) Disappointed we lost, but not so much considering we were in a hostile environment., and against the #12 team in USA.
-
Half time. Real good 2nd qtr. We started the game so slow...again. The shots started to drop. But not getting scoring from many players. Michigan's foul issues are making a difference. They've had to back off a little. Four of their starters have 2 fouls. That may end up being a factor in what happens in 2nd half. Most of their squad can score. We're certainly in it now.
-
1st qtr Michigan has a nice game plan defensively. They have scouted us pretty well. Good execution by the players. They're switching defenses man to a zone, and back to man defense.
-
Simply got beat by a better coached team, and she made adjustments going into the 2nd half. And with quickness from their guards we couldn't keep up...they were to quick..and didn't quit. We looked like ran out of gas too...and poor perimeter defense in second half. Too bad, we certainly had a good chance tonight.
-
Indiana won it by about 8 pts. Out shot Iowa overall. This time Indiana had a lot more free throws, not Iowa. Czinino (sp) only had 6 points. Clark about 25+
-
We have died and apparently run out of gas in the 4th
-
Decent first half overall. They can't slow down Markowski (almost a double double already) and friends, very much inside. They might start double teaming Markowski. Our three shots are going in pretty well, but will have to keep it up in the second half. But our guards on defense are getting their lunch handed to them. They're getting beat off the ball with regularity. Illinois isn't shooting well overall. don't know if they shoot the 3, but so far not so much. If they can pick up their percentages, the game could change. Expect to see more full court defense by ILL. It ain't over. They're well coached...so expect some changes by them in second half.
-
I know, but, what have you done lately as they say. Ohio State hasn't been a world beater as of late. LSU and South Carolina are at another Level. Both teams are quick, athletic, and can run. Not many mistakes, or turnovers Ohio St, Iowa, Indiana, maybe Maryland, maybe Illinois will be competitive. Iowa may be a better team than last year...better supporting cast. Don't see Creighton going as far as last year either. Stanford and UConn may be up there in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 depending on injuries like UConn. The NCAA and NIT tourneys will be fun to watch.Who might be the surprise teams? Nebraska, no matter which tourney they get in....it's just which Ne team will show up ?
-
Watched some of South Carolina, LSU, Louisville, etc in the last few days. Holy smokes...speed....quickness...leapers. Another level. Not sure any B1G team could beat any of them. Miracles happen, but the B1G will need help
-
That (in bold) had an awfully lot (not all obviously) to do with the turnovers in 4th. We made some quizzical passes all game long, to put it nicely. Watch the game replays/highlights and see how different their defense was fouling compared to the crazy 4th qtr. Penn St was similar...they got away with stuff. Like the turn of a switch at about 2 min left, late in the game, the refs starting calling all of NW fouls, and the game got back to sanity. Had the fouls been called all game long like that, we would have won be 25 possibly. Anyway as exhausting as it was....we got the win. It was an important win at this stage of the B1G standings. Have some really tough games coming up. Making the NCAAs brackets will be nip and tuck to the end. Having a chance that's all we can ask for at this point. A win is a win folks!! Whenever Issie decides to leave we'll really miss what she can do on the court. She has another dimension we can't duplicate right now. Just a great reliable and respectful kid, we have to be so appreciative of her coming to UNL
-
And a zillion fouls not getting called

Markowski Named to Leslie Award Top 10 She was just named to the final top ten Leslie Award for centers in NCAA women's basketball. The only sophomore on list. Major deal ! Markowski is the only player among the Leslie Award Top 10 who is younger than a fourth-year collegiate year. Watch her play every week, and you may not realize just how valuable her contributions are to the team. For example last night, she had a double double and played only a little more than half the game. She made critical end of game free throws, and the final big rebound to seal the deal. Just my two cents, and may hurt some feelings..... If Britt doesn't come to UNL, I doubt she'll go to any "local" school. Maybe not even a B1G school. Rather will go to a "Big" school, a Noter Dame, South Carolina, Duke, etc etc. She has her pick of about anyone. To the other issue. Back in the day, to hire a relative of a recruit was the worst thing possible. But as stated above, not so much now.
-
Yes, Alexis seemed to be not be well or something. She only played a little over half the game. But still had the double double. And free throws when it counted the most. Was kind of like many games where a team plays us straight up defense for thy most part, and can't stop us. Then they full out the street ball defensive terror, and we don't respond well..........the first half big lead didn't help our mindset. We lost focus. When you do that and they are on fire...it's a struggle to get back to how you started the game. Mich St reminded me of some old Rutgers teams. Crash and bang
-
Really nice 2nd qtr. Got into a better flow as game went on. Were attacking the basket well, then got the 3's to fall...shooting average overall is very good. Our rebounding is going well too. Markowski may have close to 10 already. And defensively we're holding them down. Issie had a great fist half. Playing as well as she ever has. Sam is back
-
Was really hoping we could keep the Aussie string going. This is a good indicator Issie and Jazz are sending home good reports about UNL and their experience here. Jessica is the type of player we need. International experience on National teams. She won't be like a freshman with glassy eyes on her face. Need to see more of her floor game. Hope she has some Issie type moves inside the lane. STATS https://basketball.australiabasket.com/player/Jessica-Petrie/605506?Women=1 No 12 in this team pix

We're fairly even teams in some respects. Their record is nearly the same as ours. But our schedule is stronger. They're similar in size. This is for position in the B1G race. Need to slow down McDaniel (I think that's her name)...she's been around the block, has lots of experience and is about 23 or 24. Played for Baylor and someone else previously as I recall. Yes, must start fast and never slow down. Guards and Issie attack the basket, and Markowski have another double double. Home game so that's worth maybe 10. A win will be just fine thank you !
-
As usual, watched the game again. We were at our best when we were in a fast paced attack mode. We did a lot of attacking the basket and we scored well Must have been the plan...knowing Iowa wasn't going to be tough (and foul) defensively.....inside the lane. If we sat and relied on the three, we weren't as effective\in many ways. Their center did not try to block shots or defend the basket very aggressively.....no fouls is the name of their game. Anyway, Just another thought....observation.... if it makes any sense.
