Nana has been on the roster for a year and a half and has scored a total of 21 points in conference play. He's 1 for his last 15 from 3 and that's his strong suit. The jury is still out on whether he can do anything in the Big Ten. I'm not intending to bash the kid here, because there's no shame in being not quite good enough to be a good major conference basketball player.

Unfortunately...5-6 wins looks optimistic. Unless Roby suddenly starts putting up 18 and 10 or better every night.

If we win 20 games but end up on the wrong side of the bubble, I don't think he's fired. Programs that lack tradition need to be careful about when they let a guy go - firing Danny, even after he had a season that absolutely cratered, turned out badly. Doc was fired after having two poor seasons out of three, and his recruiting appeared to have cratered (that was when nobody projected Shavon Shields to be as good as he was). If Miles is fired after a moderately successful season - and 20 wins with this team would be disappointing, but only the third 20 win season in the last 20 years - it would affect the quality of coach you could get to replace him. It would probably be better to extend him a year, but that would be done with everybody in the world knowing that he'd be gone the next time he had a bad season, which in itself also makes recruiting more difficult. As for if they win game this year, I'd be good with him sticking around until, say, he had a couple losing seasons in a row. If Miles leaves on his own, at least we can point to this job as being better than as a stepping stone to TCU, Robert Morris, Duquesne, the Merchant Marine Academy, or Southern Miss. It seems the job has been a career ender for everyone since Jumbo Stiehm.

Nebraska (13-5) vs. Rutgers (8-9) Game Thread
Dead Dog Alley replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
If Miles gets our first tournament win this year, even if he followed it up with two or three straight losing seasons and I'd be good with keeping him around. He could go full Bo Pelini and get recorded saying how much he hates it here and hates the fans, and it wouldn't bother me. This program just needs to win an NCAA tournament game - right now that is the only important goal. If he doesn't get it this year, the question is, will he ever? Very few major conference coaches get their first NCAA win in year 8, fewer get it in year 9, and nobody has ever gotten it after year 10. Only two major conference coaches since the tournament expanded have lasted past year ten without an NCAA win, and one of them was Danny Nee. Next year we might have some decent talent - Burke has to make the jump from the NEC, Green has to adjust from JC, Allen can't disappear like he does way too often, and Roby absolutely can't have nights like he did tonight, when he got outplayed by a 6'7" guy playing on one leg. And even if that turns out to be decent talent, with the possible depth and size issues, the chances of making a tournament run aren't real high unless they get somebody else up front that can really play. After all, even the bad major conference teams have some good players. The next year, with Allen, Green, Burke as seniors there's a chance he could piece a roster together, but Miles had that same chance in year 3, 4, 5, 6 and it never quite happened. -

In Danny's 14 years - the longest tenure of a major conference coach, since the expansion of the NCAA tournament to 64 teams, who did not win an NCAA tournament team - Nebraska won 57.2% of their games overall (254-190), 43.1% of regular season conference games (88-116), and finished below .500 in conference seven times, with 5 NCAA tournament appearances. In the previous 14 years under Moe & Joe, Nebraska won 57.9% of their games overall (231-168), 53.1% of conference games (104-92), finished below .500 in conference twice, with 1 NCAA tournament appearance. With a 64 team tournament, though, they'd have likely been in the tournament in 1976, 1978, and possibly in 1980, 1983, and 1984. In the next 14 years after Danny, it was a 51.5% overall winning percentage (224-211), 37.3% conference winning percentage (86-114), finishing below .500 in conference 12 times, and 1 NCAA tournament appearance. Danny had some great years, as well as some bad ones, but overall didn't elevate the program to a new level (largely due to the conference competition that just kept getting better). However after getting rid of him with no good plan in place to replace him was obviously a mess.

As much as I hate to correct a fellow early 90s NU grad, he didn't pass the great Brian Carr on the assist list...instead he's within 7 of passing Beau Reid for tenth on the assist list. To overtake Brian Carr on the assist list somebody is going to have to average 5 assists per game over a 4 year career. Instead Glynn is now tied with Carr on the all time steals list, now in sixth place. At his current season averages Glynn is on track to be 12th all time in scoring, 7th in assists, and 4th in steals after the regular season. He could easily finish 11th, 6th, and 3rd.

Here's where it probably stands. If NU makes the tournament and wins a game, Miles gets offered a 4 year extension. If they makes the tournament and don't win, there's probably a 2 year extension. If they make the NIT and make a run in it, a 1-2 year extension. If they make the NIT and lose first round, there's about a 50% chance Miles is fired, otherwise there's either no extension or 1 year. If they don't make the NIT, there's a 100% chance he's gone. If you run off a guy even after a halfway successful season it makes the coaching search much more difficult; it's a lot easier after a season that's a disaster. Nebraska has only actually fired two basketball coaches in the last 50 years, after Danny Nee went 11-19 in his fourteenth year and Doc Sadler went 12-18 in his sixth. Moe resigned right ten seconds after the first all-time NCAA tournament game, whether or not he would have been fired anyway is an open question. Barry Collier left to be the Butler AD, he more than likely would have been let go after the next year. Next year there are some promising pieces - Roby, Green, Allen, Burke - but it's far from a complete roster at this point. Remember 3 years ago when we had Shavon Shields as a senior, with AWIII and Tai Webster as juniors? Those were some pretty damn good players. We went 16-18. To re-iterate the importance of winning a tournament game this year for Miles, here are the only coaches from schools currently in the top six conferences who won their first NCAA tournament game after their seventh year at the school, since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1986. Coach School Year of First Win Leonard Hamilton Miami (FL) 9 Leonard Hamilton Florida State 9 Mike Montgomery Stanford 9 Richard Williams Mississippi State 9 Jim O'Brien Boston College 8 Bruce Parkhill Penn State 8 For the same conferences and time frame, here are the only coaches that lasted 10 years or more without winning a tournament game. Coach School Years Danny Nee Nebraska 14 Bill Carmody Northwestern 13 Here are the only coaches in the top 6 conferences with a tenure longer than 6 years with no NCAA tournament win. Coach School Years Pat Chambers Penn State 8 Tim Miles Nebraska 7 I hope Miles gets it done: a few more five year rebuilding plans and my metabolic processes will be of interest only to historians; i.e., I'll be too dead to care.

Would they be interested in a 6'9"-6'10" kid who averaged 13 and 6 as a junior in the Summit League, and shot 40% from 3? I don't know how he'd do in a higher level conference, but Tyler Hagedorn, from Norfolk, is redshirting due to injury in his fourth year at USD this year.

uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 11; ed 15 - @ Iowa
Dead Dog Alley replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Some of Jacobson's improvement might also be that, at Iowa State, he doesn't have to concentrate so much on bulking up to play defense in the post in the Big Ten. He's listed at 230 this year, where he was listed at 240 two years ago. Nebraska took him as a guy who was a bit undersized and had some offensive skills, had him focus on getting stronger and bigger and playing defense, and his offense suffered. -
If you had asked this question on January 2, 1995, and you set the Over/Under at 1,000 calendar weeks, the Over would have won. Another sobering stat.

Playing a 6'5" guy at the 4 in the Big East is a lot easier than playing a 6'5" guy at the 4 in the Big Ten. Doc Sadler, who has to be one of the best small-ball coaches around, was asked in his last season when he had all kind of injuries why he didn't just go with a small lineup like the one that went 9-9 in the Big XII during Ade's senior year. He said, in the Big Ten, you would just get killed defensively in the post trying that.
