NOOOOOOThe answer is sit your butt down until you've proven you're mentally tough and can do other things on the court outside of hitting shots. Forget about shooting - are you an incredible help defender? Rebounding your tail off? Setting great screens? Running the floor with a purpose? Creating for other teammates with the dribble drive? Maybe shots will fall after that.

02/12/2014 - Illinois Report Card
basketballjones replied to hhcdave's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Guys we don't run motion, and I don't care what Coach Miles says. We run a set nearly every time down the court, and if not we go to a continuous, revolving ball screen/hand-off, back-cut offense. We also run a majority of stuff out of a "disguised," 1-4 high set. No one runs a true motion offense anymore. Barely even mover-blocker, or true freedom in a pass-screen-away offense. And for good reason - with as athletic and as defensively oriented teams are anymore, you have to have a cohesive offensive philosophy and plan. Especially with the shot clock. And even more especially without a point guard who can transition well. The closest thing anyone runs to a motion offense is the screen-roll-replace ball screen offenses that have more motion and spacing principles than set movements. Which we do go to at end of shot clocks, admittedly. Sorry - just wanted to make that clarification/rant. I'll go back to my cave now. -
Shields coming off the bench?
basketballjones replied to lanigan123's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Shavon is woefully inconsistent and just does not bring it night to night. But he's still young and that's not all that odd. With age and experience comes consistency. He'll be a well over 1,000pt scorer here. He's a stud. -

Most efficient players in the Big Ten
basketballjones replied to Huskerbb73's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Crazy... I don't think anyone would have predicted that watching him in the preseason. -
I have seen multiple coaches lose the respect of the team after being in the siuation. One of the tougher parts as a head coach. You know their playing value to the team, and you want to make an impact on their life. But you usually get too far before you realize the damage you've done with the team. Tough position to be in.

More Rivers, Biggs, and Parker... Less -
basketballjones replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Just have to respectfully disagree. And I suspect every coach in the league would rather game plan Parker than Gallegos. Ray is the only fairly consistent threat from 3, especially among the guards. Petteway is the next best. Then Shavon, but it is getting very inconsistent by now. And you don't want Biggs and Webster shooting many right now. Having to guard Ray out there helps the offense. For the record - I'm not saying Parker for Rey. I'm saying take a few of his minutes away and spread the wealth to guys who do more and have an impact on the game even if they're not scoring. Yes, I agree with the posters who say Rey opens things up a bit for people - but all teams do that, and typically that player doesn't go 1-2 from the field. I don't see any other production from Rey if he's not scoring. He becomes non existent. -

You can say Rey did nothing in the first half - but at the beginning of the game OSU made him the focus of their defense with Craft chasing him all over. That is what opened up those driving opportunities for Webster and Biggs. Later shifted Craft from Gallegos to Biggs and Webster and we probably should have done a better job then going to Rey. Overall though even if he is not scoring other teams are aware of Rey and know that he is the one player on our team that they have to keep from getting open looks off screens. And we're 1-4 in the B1G - literally every team has done that to us and tonight is the first time it's worked as a disadvantage to the other team. We won tonight because we got what we actually need from Shields for once - and OSU was as cold and stupid as they've been all year. -

And some thoughts from the game - Wow great win. Good to see Shields step up his game with 18 and 9. But my lord Petteway and Biggs - 14 TOs between the two of you? Take care of the ball young men. And enough with the crappy body language every time something goes wrong. Leslee Smith is a beast. Rivers and Parker play their hearts out and always do little things that don't show up on the stat sheet. -
Gallegos. Sorry HHC. I know it's blasphemy to say - but for every night he goes wild from three there's 5 where he does nothing and can't guard anywhere but on ball, and gives up O Rebounds. I've said my piece. But I've been preaching this all year to my friends and tonight sealed it for me. Hope he proves me wrong, but he's too inconsistent and too unpredictable!

Lol... I'd take Gibbs on my squad any day.
-
They screen so much for McDermott it's going to be hard to keep one guy on him. As in, "I'd put Petteway on him," probably won't be the case. My philosophy? If you've got a guy as talented and involved in getting screened as DM is - let him get his without fouling him. Keep him off the FT line, if he scores he scores. Don't allow him to get any free buckets or wide open 3's. Shut down Wragge. Lots of good things will come from that if he's held well below his average.
-
I firmly believe this team should be built around Shavon Shields. Petteway is a fools gold player. Probably has all the tools to be "the dude," on your squad... But there's just something missing. He's can't attempt your most shots. If he does you've got a problem. I really think Shields is your dude, and Biggs and Webster should be creating for him. Petteway should get buckets in transition, offensive rebounds, steals, and strong drives.

If I'm Tim Miles... Re: starting lineup
basketballjones replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I should add; I'm hoping to be proved wrong and Gallegos is just a stud for us. I'm just huge on character, leadership, attitude, and energy.... And from a 5th year senior, this suspension is beyond disappointing. Hope he learns his lesson and has a great year. -
If I'm Tim Miles... Re: starting lineup
basketballjones replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I don't like his game. He's a high-volume shooter on a team that has multiple weapons and no need for a guy who needs 25 shots to score 25. So unless his game has changed, I'd rather have a role player in there (Rivers), or a drive and dish guy (Biggs), than Gallegos. And I'd rather have Shields, Pritch, and Webster getting buckets, with Petteway just making plays like he does. You can bring Gallegos off the bench when some of those scorers are on the bench and give him free range to chuck up shots. Also... I know there's more to this story about him being suspended and Tyrance leaving also. It really makes me question his character, leadership, and intelligence. -

basketballjones replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Just an opinion, but I think a lot of people here on this board really over value "the rotation," but that's just my opinion. You put your best 5 on the court that give you a chance to win... I think you're over thinking it if you're worried about depth, foul trouble, etc... -

However, I will add, this line up right here: 1. Biggs 2. Webster 3. Petteway 4. Shields 5. Pritchford Is really, really, scary-good. Then with Gallegos, Rivers, Smith, and Parker in your rotation... Ugh it's very scary to think how good we could be. -
I'm making Rey Gallegos and Dev Biggs earn that PT back..... And David Rivers is starting and playing a ton for me. Do you guys realize how much that guy has developed in a couple years? He gives us an element of versatility (offensively and defensively) that I really enjoy. Sorry, watching the game against FGCU again and he's really impressing me. That shot fake, drive, shot fake, pivot and finish he had in the first half sold me on this kids game and development.
-
Meh... Not worried if we lost. Got a lot of new pieces and toys to play with, going to take quite some time to develop a rhythm and chemistry with this team.

Figuring out who's gonna play this year is gonna be crazy for Miles and co. It's a good problem...
