Instead Danny hired Fran Frashilla, and he stayed a week. When Fran left Danny hired Gary Bargen, who brought T Buchanan and Derrick Vick. Not Richmond and Charles Bledsoe, but serviceable. On always wondered what would have happened if he had hired Dana.

Good one on Sallie. Ultimately, I also think Mike Daum, Khiry Thomas and Justin Patton will go down in history as huge misses, if you count not deciding to recruit them a "miss". With those guys, or even just one of them, I don't think some of the other threads are on the board right now....

You are missing someone who's first name starts with an "N".....she would definitely have opportunities, and lots of them. But mum's the word..........sshhhhh

HHCC Game #29 - at Minnesota (Mar. 02, 6:00 PM CST)

NU 68 Gophers 66 What the hell. -
I look at a "recruiting miss" as someone who we could have had but didn't recruit, vs. taking a swing at some great player and not signing him. Examples of the latter would be Vernon Maxwell, who Randy Cip had a good relationship with, but ultimately lost out to Florida, or Mike Miller, who we also lost to Florida despite a lot of chatter that we had a chance. Rumor is Danny was pissed at Jimmy Williams for spending so much time on Miller on a pipe dream, and for believing we had a chance. (Danny should have cut Jimmy some slack; Jimmy recruited better than Danny coached). Even a Mike McGhee, who was from Omaha, but with our program at the time and style of ball we probably weren't going to sign. A huge miss in the mid 80's was Cedric Hunter. Could have had him, Moe didn't offer and he has a great career at KU. Probably would have saved Moe's job, and who knows what happens from there. Instead of offering Hunter we take some stiffs from out of state. Daum could be in that category for Miles. Some would say Ron Kellogg, although I don't put him in the same category since it was going to be tough to sign him, and good point guards have a greater impact than a wing. Some might say Gesell was a huge miss for Doc. Going back to Jimmy's time, perhaps Bob Boozer. They named a damn street after him in Omaha, and he played for K-State.

I would be more surprised if there weren't any. Hopefully only players who may be better served at a lower level of competition, rather than some ones who obviously can play at this level. But I don't think it's fair to speculate on specific names.

Northwestern and Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament
HB replied to jayschool's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
What kind of ears, Sam? Who listens at those figures for THIS job? How big of a proven commodity? I am skeptical (not that we would pay it, but that the right ears would perk up). -
Norm, I have to respectfully disagree with you here--at the start of the-16-'17 season (so we don't have to have a squabble on here about the difference between when Yori was fired and Amy took over like earlier in the thread), there was indeed a lack of Big 10 caliber players. By that point we were playing numerous players considerable minutes who were not Big 10 caliber players. I don't want to discuss names, but combining talent and experience what we had to put out on the floor was every bit as bad as Miles' first year, and probably worse.
-
Maybe you're only talking about guards, but are you saying a second team All Big 10 player isn't the functional equivalent of Dylan Talley?
-
Those are all good points, Cazzie. BUT, we have a bonafide stud in Shepherd, and in basketball, one dominant player (I thought about using the word superstar, and perhaps should have--she is a high caliber player now, but can get considerably better with work on her game and conditioning) can make a big difference. Eilely is a special talent, and athlete and gamer at the highest level; if she improves her skills and consistency in shooting she will be even better. So I get what you're saying, but there is a nucleus which perhaps gives us more upside than what might appear on the surface.

Those are all nice quotes, but again it comes down to whether you trust anything that comes out of this guy's mouth. I don't, and I have my reasons. Not to mention that last non-answer was a pat yourself on the back thing when the question had nothing to do with you. "I worked my way up through the ranks", I've had success everywhere I've gone" blah blah. Please tell us how wonderful you are, Shawn.

WBB: 2017 B1G Women's Basketball Tournament vs Illinois
HB replied to Row6Seat10's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
Need more up arrows for this post. Love the Huskers, and this great state. Well done, Jurgey. -
People are funny. I have passion for hoops and the Huskers. Passion over practical. Can't imagine leaving early. Plus the old idea of getting one's money's worth. Finishing your supper. Eating your vegetables. Etc. But to each his or her own, of course.

Interesting description by his mom about his basketball injury--"My son was catastrophically injured". Seems a bit over the top for two torn knee ligaments. No, ligament tears are injuries. Injuries causing permanent paralysis or traumatic brain injuries are catastrophic. Never walking again is catastrophic. And missing a basketball season isn't catastrophic, it's disappointing. Not trying to be too hard on the parents, but taking normal life events and over-describing them perhaps causes a certain entitlement perspective for the kids. Well, now it's about to get real.

Well, I'm not looking to bash Amy. I would love to see her succeed here. But at the time she arrived here, Doyle and Cayton hadn't committed anywhere else, and Romeo was still here. Who knows what a big time coach could have done. Or chosen to do. She brought no players with her (unless you count a walk-on she tried to talk out of coming here), didn't get a grad transfer or late recruit. Not all as simple as you say. But yeah, Eichorst is way more to blame than Amy, I'll grant you that. You don't quite have the sand to directly state that you think Yori was to blame; but you had enough comments that its easy to see where you're coming from. So you waded in a spat between young kids, and printed it. So perhaps you contributed to the "mess" as well. Perhaps Romeo is here if you made a different choice.

That happens my club seats are available.

Wow, news flash Damon. Has been happening at least since they build the Sports Center in '76. Nebraskans hate their traffic, and love their sleep.
-
I didn't read that much into it. I just wanted to look to what the future looks like for team success. Thus my best predictions. I'm fatigued of the whole scene from last year, and Eichorst's whole deal, and am ready to talk about this basketball team. Unless someone starts something, then I still have a little left in me. But, carry on, you have the right to post and poll on it all, it was just too deep for me.

And what Shepherd said, to be fair (see, right there, you spun it). And which you reported, which is a judgment call.
-
You state that as fact, but it is clearly an opinion. And not a very solid one either. Recruiting was happening at a high level, and the coaching ability was obviously proven. Staff turnover had been a problem, but Brown was a move in the right direction. improved. If the program isn't blown up, you have Shepherd, Romeo, Eilely, Cayton and Doyle. A pretty good nucleus to work with. But that is all tangible stuff, vs. intangible drivel about chemistry and the like we read about on here a year ago.

Interesting topic, Norm. In the short term (next 2 years, as per your poll), I expect us to improve several games next year, and even more the following year, if we have no transfers by any of the top 3 or 4 players ( It isn't hard to pick out a handful who we desperately need to retain going into the next two years). Athleticism should be much better next year, as well as improved guard play. We really didn't have a true point this year, and lacked either experience or talent at the guard/wing positions. That should be much better next year, and I have high hopes for Stallworth making a big difference. I also expect improvement due to players who will be getting minutes having another year experience with this staff and the system, and I expect a better effort in the off-season from the players with regard to conditioning. On the down side, we will have zero post depth (barring a flipping of the switch by Washington). Blackburn will need to come back strong. Mitchell really isn't a post. The posts will wear down by tournament time. Surprised there wasn't an attempt to get a juco or grad transfer in who could give us at least a serviceable big. The second year could be really good, assuming retention and improvement by key returnees. Shepherd as a senior could be a incredible force if she puts in the effort on conditioning and free throws. Stallworth as an experienced senior, Kissinger with a season under her belt and improved strength, Nicea with improved shooting to go along with her athleticism, defensive skills and court awareness. Blackburn and hopefully a recruited big or 2. Long term, I don't know enough and haven't seen enough to predict. I am very interested in watching the next two recruiting classes come together. Will also be watching to see if strides are made in off-season player development and conditioning/body shaping, compared to the past off season.
-
While Hannah closed strongly, I still would have put Nicea higher up on my all freshman team. A great freshman season logging major minutes.
-
Hard to tell the level of competition, but based on that film Haiby looked good. Mershon looked like a project.
-
Front row left to right: Jack Nickolite, Randy Goebel, Henry T, Carr, ?? (this guy was fired up at the game and directed the band on a song but I have no clue), Bargen. Back Row left to right: Joel Sealer, Vick, Jackman, Neubert, Rekeweg. Martz and Day (nice red pants, Bernard!) were at the game, and Martz was hanging out with Hoppen after the game in the Railyard. Surprised Beau was no where to be found since he lives in Lincoln.

Not only that, but at 57 Husker points, no Runzas!
