Minnesota (7-19) vs. Nebraska (14-14) Game Thread
Norm Peterson replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Whatever happens, I just don't want to play MN again. No more chances for a Quad 4 loss. That's it. We made it through the gauntlet. -
Keeping up with the offers/visits

Robin spending what credibility he has left for some clickbait. In fairness, Hunter Sallis did him dirty by telling him Nebraska was in the thick of things and the very next day releasing a top 10 without us in it. -
He didn't shoot very well against Maryland, still scored 20, and we still won. I'm expecting a bounce-back game against Minnesota where he torches the nets.

Imma have to disagree with this a little bit. Last year, he put up quiet numbers. Verge would feed him on the pick and roll, but he wasn't really creating his own shots. This year, he's creating his own shots, but he's also dishing to others (often Keisei.) His assist numbers have nearly tripled over last year. His scoring numbers have increased by roughly 50%. His rebounding numbers have improved. We're running the offense THROUGH him. He often brings the ball up the floor. Nobody saw that stuff coming.

Juwan Gary and Emmanuel Bandoumel were solid pre-season picks, and they led the balloting for everyone except "We don't have that guy," but Keisei and Derrick COMBINED got fewer votes than Sam Griesel, who came in third. It just tells me maybe we, as fans, don't know as much as we think we know. Because only 1 out of 55 voters thought Derrick would be the emerging star that he clearly turned out to be.

How many of those are the same teams? -
Don't know about Milikan, but make no mistake, Sam Hoiberg is a walk-on caliber player. He was not worthy of being recruited by a D1 program, let alone a P5 program. He's certainly not one of those "extra scholarships because he's the coach's kid and can afford the tuition" situations. But he doesn't hurt us. He's good enough of a perimeter shooter that he's not a total liability on offense. And he's smart enough to handle the technical aspects of playing defense without being an overwhelming athletic presence. He wasn't getting any real minutes until Gary and Bandoumel went down, and then started getting those kinds of minutes only because of necessity. But, man, has he ever risen to the occasion. Give that kid a pat on the back. He's earning his keep. And his dream of playing for his dad is being realized in ways that are so improbable. His realistic vision going into the season had to be playing spot minutes in garbage time. But not only is he getting real minutes in games that really matter, he's seeing the floor in crunch time and making plays that, well, win the game. So, good for him. Walk-ons of the world, look to Sam Hoiberg and see what could happen to you if a couple of starters go down.

2023 SG Parker Friedrichsen -> Wake Forest...for now
Norm Peterson replied to royalfan's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
He should enjoy playing for Wake and whoever their next coach will be. -
Fortunately, 500,000 yen is roughly the equivalent of $4,000, so the NIL-to-Japan back channel doesn't have to be particularly well-funded.
-
For the record, I did NOT put him up to this. But while we're on the subject, I think Matt likes thread titles that sound like chapter titles from a tech manual whereas I like to make thread titles that sound like chapter titles from a novel.

2023 SG Parker Friedrichsen -> Wake Forest...for now
Norm Peterson replied to royalfan's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
This is totally unsurprising, by the way. He had so many opportunities to commit to Nebraska that, if he was going to do it, he could have and would have done it long ago. I'm officially moving him to the "I really don't care about this kid" category. Not wishing him ill. Just not wishing him anything at all. Parker who? -

OK, well, congrats to the next coach at Wichita St for landing this bounce-around commit. -

Not trying to dump on your daughter' accomplishments. I'm sure she deserves the interest and attention. But be forewarned: These "elite" schools advertise their rejection rate. In order to have a high rejection rate, they have to have a lot of applicants. It's their business model to reach out, get you to spend $300 on an application, only to reject you so that they can maintain their ~95% rejection rate. It's a racket, really. Ought to be illegal. -
Fortunately for me, my bookie had bought a new phone and didn't have voicemail set up yet. So, I'm good.

When was the last time we were .500 in February? -
Phantom foul on a Purdue player; he over-reacts and gets whistled for a T; Purdue goes from up like up 6 to down 17 in the next 10 minutes. It was like a 27-4 run. That technical foul really threw Purdue off. Like a punch to the chin that staggered them and almost dropped them to the canvass. I don't think they recovered. So, yeah, Maryland won pretty big, but don't give Maryland too much of the credit. Purdue self-destructed after that T.

I like this kid. A lot. I hope we extend an offer soon. I want a commit from him.

Tap those brakes. Not saying there's a big reason but there's not no reason. -
KenPom 2022-2023 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I think some folks might be confused that the people complaining about NET rankings don't understand how NET rankings are computed. Let me just say I don't care HOW the rankings are computed; I only care that the results make sense. And it doesn't make sense for an Ohio State team that is 2-10 in Quad 1 games, and has a Quad 4 loss, and lost to us head-to-head, and has fewer conference wins than us is ranked 35 spots ahead of us in the NET rankings. I don't care how they tabulate their rankings. I'm saying those tabulations require some tweaking to avoid some of these absurd results. -
Not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here. Would any of these Ls be Ws if Walker had played the first 5 games? (Remember, against Memphis, he had 15 pts and 12 bds, but he also had 9 TOs, which probably doesn't happen if he's got a few games under his belt already.)
