KenPom 2015-2016 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I hear what you're saying, 49r, about the post, but we were even more limited there last year and finished with a higher kenpom ranking than where we are starting out this year. We gonna surprise some folks. -
KenPom 2015-2016 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
KenPom also factors in like uber top recruits because those guys -- like Jahlil Okafor at Duke -- tend to have an impact on a team's play for that coming season. But they don't factor in basically other recruits because there's not so strong of a correlation between the darned good recruits you might have coming in and how successful your season is. -
KenPom 2015-2016 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I can neither explain nor justify the approach KenPom uses to make their pre-season rankings. But there's all kinds of statistics involved. They figured out the offensive efficiency of the returning players and stuff like that. They also take into account a team's last 5 years or so of what they've done because statistics show that teams that have had success tend to continue to have it, whereas teams that have been mired in failure tend to continue that as well. I think they also factor in how much a team spends on its program because that seems to have some sort of correlation with success on the floor. Lots of stuff, but there's a reason for it. -
Man, how many times this year am I going to have to edit the thread title? Sheez.

2016 PF/C Mitch Lightfoot -> Kansas
Norm Peterson replied to The Polish Rifle's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
C'mon 49r, you know the rules. That wasn't a tweet from Brian Rosenthal, so it's not official yet. -
So, is he any good? Or did we just invite him in for a self-guided tour of the facilities? (I realize this is none of my business.)
-
His physical health is by no means your (or anyone's) business if he doesn't want it to be. Thanks for the lecture, dad. Does that also apply to other things like: Discipline? Starting lineups? Recruiting targets? Injury updates during the season? Because none of those things are "our business" if they don't want them to be. (And, yet, this is a discussion board ...)

Silver, there was a rush to judgment in the Illinois situation in part because I think some people don't really like their coach. I didn't see the same rush to judgment in the case of Pitino. There were some people saying it looks bad. And it does. However, I see some significant differences in the two situations. In the case of Louisville, the allegations are much more concrete as to what was done and who did it. And no one has said Pitino did it or even that he knew about it and tacitly approved of it by not putting a stop to it. What I've seen is that people say, with it going on as long as it did and being as involved as it was, how could Pitino NOT have known? I don't know. I haven't offered an opinion on that case one way or the other as it relates to Pitino. But, again, with Louisville, the woman says she was paid something like $10,000 over time to supply dancers? And she would then serve as an intermediary between the dancers and the graduate assistant coach striking the deals for prostitution. Her daughters have both come forward and named specific recruits that they slept with and have asserted they were paid money to do it. And some news outlet, can't recall which, has apparently independently (?) confirmed wire transfers between this coach and this woman. I don't know if those allegations are true. I'll repeat: I don't know if those allegations are true. But names have been named with concrete accusations of patently illegal activity. And not a soul has stepped forward to say it didn't happen. At best -- at BEST -- Pitino has said, "none of us knew." With Illnois women's basketball, the allegations were comparatively fuzzy and others who would have had to have been there and known what was going on have jumped forward and stated unequivocal support for the coaches. I think the two situations are only comparable in that they involved accusations against basketball programs in major conference in middle America. Outside of that, I think they're very dis-similar.
-
Are we?
-
Well, don't they just take the accusations at face value and hold people responsible accordingly? What's all this hooey about proof and evidence and such. Don't they just need a narrative?

It's not so much that it was badly written. It would have been helpful to read if we were fans of a different team or more casual fans of the Huskers. But we're too educated as an audience. So many different things that, if we wanted to pick it apart, we could easily do that. For instance, here's a passage that I'm sure had atskooc on the verge of writing a 10-page rebuttal: The final departures are Ayegba, Kurkowski, and Trevor Menke. All together, these players combined to average less than four minutes per game. Outside of a potential hit to team leadership, it's hard to call any of these three departures anywhere close to significant. Implying that Menke's departure is insignificant is an outrage up with which atskooc surely shall not put!
-
Bottom line: drafted or not, he still didn't make a roster. Does anyone think one more year in college would have changed that?
-
The problem for guys like us reading articles like this is that none of these national writers know our team nearly as well as we do. Any perspective they take, any issue they try to address, has already been hashed and rehashed on this board a thousand times. We know better than they do. They do have better graphics, however.

Norm Peterson replied to AuroranHusker's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
All I have to say is... This team has two players 7'0+ and Ed Morrow worked them... Not only do they have two 7'0+ guys... They were both ranked in the top 10 by ESPN We will be fine!!! http://www.maxpreps.com/games/basketball-winter-14-15/bishop-gorman-vs-simeon/1-3-2015-Gi2X82SaQ0euwiyS8PyctQ.htm Edit they were 6'10 and 7'0 and only rated 11 and 12 http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/view/espnu100/sort/rank/class/2015 C'mon, get it right. Changes the whole point. (I keed, I keed. I hope you're not one of the thin-skinned peeps who don't get sarcasm.) -
Is this the death knell for Rick Pitino's program?
Norm Peterson replied to jimmykc's topic in College Basketball
I'm sorry, but I found that very sad. -
The biblical Noah or the Noah of HHC? Must mean Noah of HHC - just saying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YX-gqRdK_8 You mean parting the Red Sea isn't a great dance move?! Noah built an ark. Moses was the one who parted the Red Sea. The HHC Noah just partied with a sea of red.

He meant to do that. I'm pretty sure.

Totally agree. The writer completely loses credibility for anything he says thereafter if he can't do the basics of at least looking to see how long the coach has been employed with that school. It is almost universally agreed that one means one. A single one of something. A pair is two. So is a couple. Most people would agree that a few is more than a couple but less than several. Generally three, maybe four or five. Several means more than a few. Certainly more than three. Several underwhelming years means at least 4 of them. IMO, there's only been one underwhelming year in the Miles tenure and that was last year. '13-'14 was amazing making the tourney when we were basically picked last in conference. As Donkey said, '12-'13 might have been an even better job of coaching and certainly wasn't underwhelming when compared to expectations. To say Miles has had several underwhelming years since he's been at Nebraska is so obviously wrong that it reflects a total lack of fact-checking and diligence on the part of the writer. Can't even bring myself to read what came after that part. You're so wrong on that, the rest of it doesn't even matter.

Absolutely! And, while we're at it ... Fixed that for ya, Silver. Fixed it for ya, Auroran. No, the wiener is for Anthony Weiner, the Dick-sexter. Remember that guy, he was a politician. Oh, nevermind... Okay, let's get this straight, so we can move on... Whiner, weiner. Wiener, Dick Pitino. Got it.Now, does that make him a pedantophile? Or does he just like Gabe Zwiener? -

This is Why I Don't Like Adidas...
Norm Peterson replied to HuskerFever's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I think it had more to do with Pepsi pretty much giving their products to the University for nothing, while Warren Buffett owned Coca Cola couldn't afford to beat that price. I love Coca Cola, but their marketing pretty much sucks. More places are switching/ have switched to Pepsi. Most bars I go to you can order a pepsi and jack (which is as awful as it sounds) but you can't order a jack and Coke....and if you do...you'll still get pepsi. However you are corrected on the Gatorade stuff. I don't think that Powerade (Cokes answer to Gatorade) had even come close in sales. Can you order a Royal Crown Royal at the bars you go to? (Crown Royal with Royal Crown cola -- not endorsing it.) -
