Lineup screams zone to me. I think we could play a very good zone with this type of group.
-
Good point. I forgot about Chandler. I am not sure what our chances are of getting Ernst. I could live with both grad transfers and Chandler if we cannot get Ernst. If we can pick the correct grad transfer, I would like Ernst, grad and Chandler better also. This hinges on the coaches having a confident choice of grad transfer, and it may be tough as they are light years different in style which is why I don't hate getting both.
-
Hell of a good question about the analytics.
-
Can someone confirm that we now have 3 spots left? And can someone else explain why it would be a bad idea to take both grad transfer bigs and also Ernst with those three spots? Seems like that would be a great plan, as you have two options to help next year and Ernst for the long haul, while not tying up a scholarship for long with two of them.

I think we will get one or both of those grad transfer bigs that are coming this weekend.
-
For those not yet familiar.

30 percent can be functional as long as it serves a dual purpose of bringing out their bigs to check him out there. He needs to be closer to 40 if they are leaving him uncontested out there, which I doubt was the case much. Obviously 35 would be better than 30 though if he is going to shoot quite a few.

2017 Grad Transfer (Winthrop), C, Duby Okeke -- LOI
royalfan replied to Norm Peterson's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Finally watched the highlights. He is much better than I would have anticipated. He wouldn't be all that much worse than Morrow IMO. He isn't a black hole turnover machine at least. Better shotblocker. If we can get him playing as a high energy defender offensive rebounder off the bench, I am okay with him. We just need to scotch tape this together this season while we regroup. He is a really good get to serve that purpose IMO. -
Want this guy pretty bad. He isn't a strong defender, but he does look like a very smart defender. Knows what type of shot he is willing for the other guy to take and just goes straight up and makes them make that shot over him. Looks like he can stroke it to spread the defense. Watching the NBA games and all the good teams pretty much being deadly three point shooting teams, this is the style I want to play. Michigan light, if you will. He would help do this next year.

This is the thing about Miles. He is just arrogant enough to believe he can do things like this. Sometimes it even works. If only they could coach a little better.
-
Yeah, really. He has to be the dumbest man on the planet to think his game is a wing type player.
-
-
If you like not recruiting any speed or power on offense and overrecruiting "grinder" type guys then he is killing it.
-
Recruiting has to be a daunting task for the staff at this point.

My guess is Miles will be fired this weekend

A bold assumption to even think Crean would have interest in coming here. -
Losing him is not as big of a deal on the court as most here think. He is a very flawed player. He can't do the things that most great teams have 4's that can do. He is too undersized for the 5. But this is bigger than that, and we all know it. This sucks. This is basically the realization that Miles won't be here in a year most likely, and we are going to have another 1-2 years of sucking after that while it gets built up, if it gets built up. It is maddening. We have awesome facilities, awesome fan base, great academic support, and we still are so much worse than so many programs that we should be better than. I don't get it. It almost seems as though we need to overspend to get good, or good pretty lucky and we have fiscally responsible leadership.

Three-Point Shooting in College Basketball
royalfan replied to Hooper's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Pretty much correct Norm. And I am also very much speaking to defense as well. The efficiency results are dreadful at both ends in relation to the arc. Look at a team like Nevada for instance, since Mussleman was mentioned as a possible replacement if Miles were fired. He takes the arc very seriously it seems. 41st in nation in 3 point percentage. 15th in nation at 3 point percentage allowed. Obviously one has to dig much deeper, and I haven't. Those are numbers I would suggest would result in winning basketball. I will dig deeper when I have some free time to see if I am overrating this, which is quite possible. -
Three-Point Shooting in College Basketball
royalfan replied to Hooper's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I don't care if the line is how it is or moved back a bit. In theory, we should be able to use it as a weapon to close the talent gap. Unfortunately the staff doesn't understand or doesn't care about the analytics of it. This is making the climb much steeper. -
Good call. You nailed it as it turns out. Extremely strong showing.
-
If I am understanding what he is saying correctly, he has to be wrong. Contested shots are much much harder to make than wide open looks.
-
I am basing this on the assumption that Florida was out of time outs which I believe was the case. Wisconsin mismanaged the end of the game. I discussed this topic once this year in some thread regarding missing second free throw. When there is that little time left, the end result with any kind of defense being played correctly at all is going to be a three pointer for Florida to win the game. It does not matter if you are ahead by 1 or 2 points. You are going to lose if they make the shot. By making the second free throw you are giving them an incredibly easier shot. You are looking at half court or further if you miss and harass the rebounder just a little bit. You make it, you are looking at the kind of look that they got. You rarely see teams miss when they can go up 2, but they should in many instances. This was one of them. They also got unlucky that Hayes, who is a bad free throw shooter happened to make it.
-
Only problem is that this is the toughest league in the nation to run and push the tempo in. The coaches are just so damn good that it makes it very tough. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try to run and get easy baskets. While South Carolins offense looks like the Showtime Lakers in comparison, they are challenged offensively. They try to get as many transition hoops as possible to counter it. We should do this too, as all teams should.
-
That is a bunch of bs. "Most" Michigan fans know now and knew then that they have an excellent coach.
-
What is your point in regards to my post since you quoted my post?
-
This is a team that is the opposite of us. They use the 3 point line well and understand the importance of defending it. They understand how to develop players. They become better shooters over time. They are well coached. They get better in relation to the competition throughout the season. They are good. All things I want is to be. They are one of the blueprints I would like to try to emulate. Coach is not only awesome but also an awesome individual.
