12/23/12 - UTEP Report Card

Thanks for the report, hhcscott, hope you take away a lot of nice memories from the old border town. I sure have some since El Paso was where I got married 43 years ago. Merry Christmas to all.

Simple math, 0 FGs for Dylan Talley = 0 wins for Nebraska.

Story line for the remainder of the year. CONSISTENCY.

Example, Rivers goes off for 20 points against CM - then goes 0-3 with two airballs against UTEP

Example, Talley goes off for 20+ points against CM - then goes 0-fer against UTEP

Example, Benny, Peltz, Shavon, Ubel, Andre star one moment, or one game, then look overwhelmed the next moment. Perhaps this is a bit unfair to Brandon Ubel. He works hard every moment that he is in games. But he played poorly in the first half of the UTEP game and then picked up the pace in the second half. Perhaps a bit unfair to all of them, but these guys can play better by becoming consistent. Fouls, turnovers, missed lay ups and mental breakdowns at the end of a shot clock...all are correctable, but man, the time is now.

Let's be fair that I don't think Ubel works any harder or tries any harder than anyone else on the floor. The talent level is just very different on this team. I do agree 100% with you that the biggest problem is consistency for this team. I have been extremely disappointed with the consistency of play from guys like Talley, Ubel, and Rivers. This team needs to find some more consistency if they want to be a competitive team this year.

KLDM, I guess I have not seen Ubel at practice for over a year now. I do know that when I attended practices, Ubel was one player that never, ever had to be disciplined during practice. He always wanted on the floor and he always busted a nut throughout the entire practice. He was a man of few words, but he seemed to always be in the right place over and over again.

I also have read and heard from numerous sources (including comments from both Doc and Coach Miles) about how hard Ubel works and how he is such a terrific leader during cardio, weight and practice sessions.

I also note that in a recent game that Ubel chased a guard down on a break away and stuffed a shot (okay - yes, he got called for goal tending). I am not dissing any of our players, but i do think that Ubel is a shining leader for this team...Yes, this is just my very humble opinion.

That's a fair evaluation as I used to go to alot of practices as well when we were able to (I miss those days). You won't get any arguement from me that Ubel seems like a good kid and has never gotten in trouble. I probably mis-read your post as it seemed like you were saying that he is the only one that works hard every minute and I know of other kids that have the same work ethic. My post wasn't a knock against Ubel as opposed to giving other players their due as well. I agree with everything you have written here. I've seen an improvement in Ubel's game this year and would be interesting to see if he had another year under Miles. Ubel seems like a very good kid that will be successful beyond his time at NU.
