12/15/2012 - At Oregon Report Card

      OFFENSE: F

The last time that Nebraska scored 38 points or less, 75% of Husker Hoops fans were not yet even alive.

In fact, to find this occasion, you have to go back to February of 1961 and the Huskers scoring just 33 against KU. Jerry Bush was the coach of that team.

The Huskers last scored under 40 when they put in 39 at the end of the 2006-2007 season in the Big 12 Tournament (a 54-39 loss to Oklahoma State).

We don't need to beat a dead horse here, because my guess is we may see this happen again once or twice come B1G play.

Let's just put it this way; when Ray Gallegos is missing his shots (4-12 today; 1-8 from downtown) and Brandon Ubel and Andre Almeida are non factors (combining for 5 points), this team will struggle to hit 40, let alone 50.

Nebraska looked pitiful today offensively - sloppy, lethargic and unable to convert on the few open shots they did get, especially around the rim.

    DEFENSE: B-

Nebraska was slightly above average defensively, though they did allow the Ducks to convert on WAY TOO MANY shots in the lane, especially in the first half.

But to be honest, I was not impressed with Oregon at all. They showed no ability to knock down anything outside of ten feet. They were especially putrid from downtown (2-13).

Kudos to the Big Red for forcing 16 turnovers and holding Oregon to a solid 60 points.

    REBOUNDING: F

41-25 Oregon (+16), with the Ducks pulling down eleven offensive boards and limiting Nebraska to five.

The lack of offensive rebounding was especially concerning given the fact that Nebraska was hocking up three after three, and missing three after three (14 missed from downtown). NU's zone did make it tough at times to get rebounds in the second half and I will say that Almeida and Ubel being non factors didn't help, either (combining for 6 boards).

    BALL HANDLING: D

    16 turnovers, 7 assists - near fail.

The Huskers did a better job in the second half, and its difficult to be TOO HARD on them since Benny Parker and Mike Peltz are both nowhere near 100%.

Disappointing to see 4 turnovers out of Gallegos, too.

    COACHING: B

Thanks to the microphones of FSN, we got to hear two thirds of what Coach Miles had to say outside of timeouts, and it was quite clear he had fire and intensity in this one, plus he NEVER gave up throughout the course of the contest.

As I've mentioned, I'm not going to be too hard on this team, simply because we all know what we're up against this year and where we are in the big picture.

However, if we're scoring 38 points next year or beyond, then we'll start grading coaching accordingly.

For now, I love the man in charge and this game has virtually no effect on my thoughts on Coach Miles.

    OVERALL GRADE: D

Nebraska's offense was so bad in this game that it stunk up Oregon for years to come.

However, the Huskers played solid defense and found a way to make this a game for 30 minutes, though honestly, I don't think ANY OF US EVER THOUGHT it was actually a winnable game, even at halftime. The nine point deficit at intermission felt more like 15 or 20.

Still, all in all, nice to see the team competing and for now, that's enough.

P.S. Let's keep our fingers crossed for David Rivers.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: DYLAN TALLEY

2012-2013 PLAYER OF THE GAME TOTALS:

    RAY GALLEGOS - 4

    DYLAN TALLEY - 3

    BRANDON UBEL - 2

Damnit...I forgot about the tie grade!

Thanks for picking up the slack. I'm sure it won't be the last time!

I thought the F grades were a bit high. Don't they give out F minuses any more? I had other places to be yesterday and thought I might wear out the fast forward button on this one.

I like how this team defends. Despite a new system and freshmen playing big minutes, it looks like everyone knows what they are doing and understands Miles' concepts. Nice schemes game in and game out. it took Altman about 4 timeouts to figure out how to attack the zone. Oregan finally got some easy buckets late moving the ball in the half court.

Offense is just going to be a struggle. Not many shooters, which makes it easy on the defense. Brick after brick after brick, often when the looks are decent.

With this team its easy for me to be glass half full. So, I'm thinking of the defense right now.

The 80 point, two game total (Creighton, Oregon) is the lowest since the 1948-49 season. I wouldn't be surprised we find out the lowest point total record in a 3 or 4 game stretch once conference play starts....

I know the game was a dumpster fire and all that, but agree on the B for coaching, maybe higher.

We aren't playing with these scores because we're holding the ball for 30 seconds, jacking up a shot and then running back without going for an offensive rebound. We're running an offense and playing sound defense. But this is the result of the roster we're playing. There was one possession under 5 minutes where it was pretty obvious we had no chance of a comeback, but we still ran the offense with crisp passes and Talley ended up with a nice little open baseline shot fairly early in the shot clock. (shockingly, it went in!) That tells me the coach has the team's attention. Oregon is good, is well-coached and pretty deep. We played them on the road and didn't quit plugging away. But we're playing, what now, 7 scholarship players? and two are freshmen.

Yeah, it's hard to watch sometimes, but the coach is holding up his end.

Oregon has a team that has knocked off some people and have one loss on the season.

They had less than 7000 people at the game and you could hear Miles yelling during most of it.

I know a lot of that had to do with Christmas vacation, but that place was dead.

If they flipped scenarios, is there any doubt Nebraska would have sold out the Bob?

When people talk about Nebraska having great fans, this is one of the reasons.

I'm not sure that Nebraska would have sold out the BDSC but I know it would have been close.

Having followed Oregon the past few years I can safely say that Nebraska fans are much, much better in terms of support.
