Huskers Open Season Series with Hoosiers Sunday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to action after its longest layoff of the Big Ten season when the Big Red battle Indiana on Sunday in Bloomington. Tip-off between the Huskers and the Hoosiers is set for 1 p.m.

Nebraska, which has won seven of its last eight games, is coming off an 87-69 home win over Penn State Tuesday night. The Huskers, who improved to 13-1 at home this season, got one of their most balanced and complete efforts of the season against the Lady Lions.

Jessica Shepard notched her 13th 20-point performance of the season, while Natalie Romeo continued to lead the nation from long rang by knocking down 5-of-10 threes on her way to 19 points. Anya Kalenta added the best performance of her career with 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Rachel Theriot flirted with a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and 14 assists against the Lady Lions.

Like Nebraska, Indiana has been terrific at home this season, carrying a 10-0 record to Sunday’s game after a 79-74 win over Iowa Thursday. The Hoosiers, who are in the midst of playing four of five games at home, trailed the Hawkeyes by 17 points in the third quarter before rallying.

Indiana heads into the game against Nebraska with a 14-9 overall record, including a 6-5 Big Ten mark. The Hoosiers improved to 10-0 at home for the first time since 1973 with the win over Iowa.

Tyra Buss has provided the Hoosiers with one of the Big Ten’s best scorers, averaging 18.5 points per game. She is joined in an experienced backcourt by 5-11 junior guard Alexis Gassion, adds 10.5 points per game. Karlee McBride, rounds out IU’s starting backcourt with 7.2 points per games.

Amanda Cahill adds 14.7 points and a team-best 7.9 boards per game. Jenn Anderson adds 7.9 points pg, while anchoring the back of Indiana’s defense.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Indiana 4-2, including a 4-0 record as Big Ten foes.

                                                                              BEAT INDIANA!

As mentioned in another thread, I watched all but the last quarter of the Iowa-Indiana game a few days ago. Iowa was ahead the whole game, and was up about 12 going into the 4th, and Indiana blew off the doors of Iowa in the last 10 min.  Out scored Iowa 32-16 in 4th. It was almost like Indiana lulled them sleep, then pounced on Iowa.

So we obviously must be prepared to go all 4 quarters.

Indiana is one of those teams that doesn't really have a squad full of fast and talented players, but they have enough skill, and when added to great work ethic...and never say quit attitude..... they can be dangerous. Their coach has them playing up to their abilities.

Assume Kyndal or Nat will defend PG Buss. Buss is their spark plug and leader. Hold her down some how, and it will make a big difference. One other guard can shoot threes too.....as can a couple of others.

Cahill is a player all over the court that can score....need to shadow her too.

They do have a good sized big..decent defender.  Their bigs aren't particularly skilled, but work hard.  Something I noticed.....both bigs make almost every move, going toward the right (handed) side of the basket. No clue of a left handed shot. Our bigs will be in for a war so to speak.

I could reading it completely wrong, bit see it as a tough tough ...away game

Look for Indiana to give Jessica their full attention in an effort to try and slow her down. They'll also be concentrated on limiting Natalie's looks from the outside. Therefore if both Allie and Rachel T have really good games the Huskers should come away with a huge w. I think the key is Allie, if she can turn in one of her best efforts by controlling the boards and making her shots the Huskers have a good chance to win.

Huskers have to rebound, defend the penetration drives to the bucket, make the high percentage shots and free throws and limit the turnovers to under 12.

Would like to see Rachel B make an appearance, that would help a lot on the defensive end and rebounding. Not sure on her status though. Would like to see Kyndal C have a big game too.

Here's to a big game for all the Ladies!   :)   May Natalie be 'dead-eye' again on her Treys!  ;)

Speaking of Natalie,  Lets vote for her in Hero Sports Poll!

Only 550 votes for Natalie vs. 1,090 for Fla Atlantics' Kat Wright.   After Kat's 500 vote spurt (must have been programmed voting) her pace has slowed to nil.   Now's our chance to catch-up!   Let's Vote - maybe before, during, or after the  Indiana game (or all three ;))

Score @ End of First: 13-12, Lady Huskers! Slow start and Lackluster game so far; Neither team looking very good. Lots of missed shots.

On pace for a 40 or 50 pt game! Some Lady Huskers are not playing, i.e. Esther & Burns.

30-24 Hoosiers @ the Half! Lady Huskers will have to step it up in the 2nd half to win!

Both teams are looking like they just want to get out of there and go watch the Super Bowl!

Got to be strong with the ball on rebounds. The Huskers just look out of sync. Need to start making shots from the outside.

Hopefully they come out on fire the second half, get that lead back and hold on to it. And put a stop to all those turnovers.

If the refs would figure out what a travel is and is not some of those would go down. but they have made some bad passes
