Row6Seat10 Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Sounds as if we're in the market for a new assistant coach. A few of us on here have heard rumors for a few days now and it looks like the rumors are coming true. National women's basketball pundants are starting to report that Husker assistant Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller is one of two assistant coaches that were hired by the Florida Gators. I suppose we'll know know more in a few days. @https://twitter.com/wbballhoopscoop/status/585948924214702080 Quote
HB Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Figured this was coming but hoped it wasn't. Thanks, Shimmy, for your time as a Husker coach. Need a home-run hire now; with an emphasis on a big-time recruiter. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Couldn't agree more on the big time recruiter. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Got to be a little tough on the rest of the coaches as it would be nice to have your recruiting coordinator here as official visits start tomorrow for prospective 2016 recruits. Quote
whoopdeedoo Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 well, crap. not the best timing, but, guess there never really is. in the words of HB, need a HR hire. would be nice not to have this drag out. Quote

HB Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Wow, those would be huge downgrades from Shimmy, in terms of experience and recruiting cred and contacts. Other than the sentimentality involved, it would be hard to justify either choice. If we aren't in a position to get a proven, bonafide, high profile assistant with our resources and recent success, something is wrong. Also, I love those media guide write ups. Ashley was a great member of our team, but to say she was a "standout player" at Nebraska is one of the biggest stretches ever. But i suppose "overachieving role player" doesn't sound as impressive. kansashusker Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 How good of a player somebody is has zero relationship to how good of a coach they are. Plenty of good players can't coach, and plenty of avg to poor players can really coach. basketballjones 1 Quote
KarlHessEatMy.... Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Lets get a UCONN assistant to come to Nebraska Quote
kansashusker Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Plus I would argue how many "high profile womens assts." are there even. We picked Shimmey up after she got fired from Saint Louis, She is a great person with lots of personality and fun to be around, but not sure she was "high profile" when we got her. In my opinion recruiting coordinator position is about youthful energy and ability to spend tireless hours on the road, and in gyms. Shimmey did that well because she is single and a road warrior, and has a youthful personality, but normally a lot of recruiting coordinators are young. Kids relate to younger coaches in everyday conversation, text exchanges, etc better than older ones sometimes. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Our last two hires as assistants both at one time were Division 1 head coaches prior to becoming an assistant for the Huskers. Although I think the problem with hiring an ex-head coach is that they've got one eye always scanning the landscape for that next head coaching opportunity to come along. I think Yori has to look at the recruiting capabilities of the new coach first and foremost. The first call I would make would be to Boise St. and see if Coach Sunny had any interest in coming back. HB Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 How good of a player somebody is has zero relationship to how good of a coach they are. Plenty of good players can't coach, and plenty of avg to poor players can really coach. That wasn't my point, that was just an aside. My point was directed to hiring an inexperienced third assistant from a mid-level school. Is there something here I'm missing that cries out "big time hire?" Have either of them ever closed on a high level player? Have any connections or ins with someplace or someone that will produce Big 10 level players? Other than attending Nebraska, I don't see what the attraction would be right now. Losing Sunny and Shimmy back to back is troubling. Quote

Absolutely... need powerful recruiter...now more than ever ....because of the many other schools that continue to place so much emphasis on recruiting. It's simply a must have in this day and age of women's basketball....all women's sports for that matter. It's just not automatic recruiting for us.... like the UConn's of this world. If we want to compete in the B1G...got to bring in the best we can possibly find. Yes, thanks so much Shimmy....well done. Quote

dlrrk Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Whoopdeedo is on target. Sunny graduated from Boise State... That bullet has left the muzzle. I also think Whoopdeedo is correct with respect to (WRT) an "up and comer." I think that the youth of Shimmy/Finch attracts young players more than older folks do... My girl loves all the coaches, but she is very close to Coach Shimmy and Coach Finch. It was a sad evening when she received the call saying coach was going to Florida. She's mature enough to understand that it's a business, and she looks forward to seeing who is chosen to replace the newest Gator. Quote

So does coach Yori hire a postion coach to replace Shimmy,as she was the post, forwards coach. Or does she move someone over who is already on the staff and just hire a recuriter? Quote
whoopdeedoo Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 one other name that might be interesting. although, not sure she would consider giving up her head coaching position. former husker and present head coach of USD Coyotes, Amy Williams. listening to her talk and watching her coach, she appears to be pretty high energy. Yeah I know coach Sunny right now probably wouldn't be interested, but I'd still give her a call. This program is near and dear to her heart and she's done so much for us as an assistant in the past that I think she's earned that phone call just to gage where her interest level is. Quote

redsteve Posted April 21, 2015 Report Posted April 21, 2015 I'm certainly not in the "know" as to what's going on behind the scenes in women's basketball, but everything regarding recruiting seems to be a secret...or maybe just not reported.....very little press local coverage of what the assistants are doing, or Yori making recruiting visits....visitations by prospects, etc. Football has recently announced where each assistant coaching is out recruiting, and it's easy to read about who they're perusing. etc etc. There's pictures of visitors, while here, placed on various sites. Mens basketball is much the same. If one is interested in women's basketball....there seems to be a void. Is it just not followed enough for "reporters" to make the effort to get the "news"?? Quote
