No. 21 Huskers Aim for Road Win Against Talented Wildcats

The No. 21 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Big Ten road action this week beginning with a Wednesday night clash at surging Northwestern.

Tip-off between the Big Red and the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., is set for 7 p.m.

The Huskers are coming off a 70-63 win over Wisconsin in front of a season-high crowd of 8,622 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. Natalie Romeo led Nebraska with a career-high 21 points while matching a career high with four assists. Tear’a Laudermill added 20 points and a career-high seven assists. Emily Cady and Hailie Sample combined for 17 points and 17 rebounds to help the Huskers.

While Nebraska got back on the winning track after dropping three straight games to top-25 teams, the Wildcats extended their winning streak to five straight games with a 63-62 win at Michigan. Each of the last four games for Northwestern have been one possession games. In fact, eight of the Wildcats’ last nine games have been decided by single digits

A win against Nebraska would also give Northwestern its first 20-win season since 1995-96 and would all but officially secure the Wildcats’ first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996-97. That season also marked the last time a Northwestern team finished with a winning Big Ten record (9-7), which the Wildcats would secure with a 10th conference victory.

As a team, Northwestern is averaging 73.8 points while allowing 62.2 points per game on the season. The Wildcats shoot 43.9 percent from the field, including a strong 35.5 percent from three-point range. They have also hit 70.8 percent of their free throws. Northwestern owns an impressive plus-4.9 team turnover margin, but a minus-2.6 team rebounding margin.

Nebraska owns a 7-3 series lead with Northwestern, including a 3-2 mark since joining the Big Ten. Like Northwestern, Nebraska is no stranger to close games. The last three meetings between Nebraska and Northwestern have been decided by five points.

Emily Cady owns nine double-doubles on the year, including four in Big Ten play.

Emily Cady enters the Northwestern game with 3,996 career minutes played and needs just four minutes of action to join former teammates Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper as the only Huskers in history with 4,000 career minutes.

Emily Cady’s 1,353 career points rank No. 14 in Husker history. She needs 80 points to catch Diane DelVigna.

Tear’a Laudermill has scored in double figures in 10 straight games.

Tear’a Laudermill has hit 20 threes over the last eight games.

In a pair of preliminary mock drafts for the 2015 WNBA Draft, Tear’a Laudermill has been ranked among the top 25 players in the nation.

Brandi Jeffery (119) is one of four Husker seniors who have played more than 115 career games.

Hailie Sample ranks 11th on the Nebraska career rebound list and needs 12 boards to tie Jan Crouch in 10th with 681.

Natalie Romeo is coming off a career-high 21 points in Nebraska’s win over Wisconsin. She hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor, including 3-of-6 threes. She also matched her career high with four assists while playing a career-high 35 minutes. She made her third straight start in place of Rachel Theriot and her fifth overall start of the season against the Badgers.

Although NU is in the midst of its hottest stretch of the season since its 10-0 start, Nebraska is attempting to right the ship. Before a win Sunday, the Cornhuskers were stumbling through a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season. The start of this decline can be traced back to the injury of starting junior guard Rachel Theriot.

Coach Joe McKeown drew parallels between what Nebraska is going through and what the Cats have dealt with in terms of the injury bug. McKeown applauded the rest of the Nebraska roster and said the Cornhuskers have been playing well without their leading scorer, despite not getting winning results.

“They’ve played really well without her,” McKeown said. “They’re balanced, you know. They can score, and their system is real solid. So the one thing about Nebraska, they really don’t beat themselves, regardless of who’s on the floor.”

Unfortunately, there is pretty much zero fan representation at Northwestern at women's basketball games. The students have no sense of sports culture, and I am almost always a one-man student section there.  Even at the men's games, the student section is mostly fairweather fans.

Well, you are to be commended for your efforts, Noah.    All you can control is what you do, and you are a great fan.

Northwestern wins this one unfortunately. We had a hard time with them in Lincoln last year and lost in Evanston last year. If we have a really good shooting night and/or they have a poor one that could obviously shift things in our favor.

Why can't we shoot anymore? What in the world has happened that we cannot make shots? Are things being rushed because Theriot isn't on the court? I seem to remember some games with poor shooting even when Rachel was still playing.

Lets not bring Theriot into this saying the team is clamming up because she is out for the season.  I think the team knew shortly after the initial injury that surgery and out for the season was inevitable and they accepted it and moved on.  It has been, what, 5 games without Theriot?  This isnt a shock to anybody around the program that this was going to happen.
