Well, I'd still be pissed about the Creighton game I guess...

Four games I think we could and should have won:

Creighton

Incarnate Word

Hawaii

Indiana

If we win those, our record would be 17-5 (6-4) and people would most definitely not be bitching about how our season is going right now.

There's a lot of angst on this board about how this season is a disappointment.  Those games were all before January 1 and I think we were just in a funk about trying to live up to the expectation of being a top 25 team and playing too damn tight.  Plus having injuries to a couple of important players.

I'm not making excuses.  I'm just offering this for perspective.  Yes we lost those early games.  But the team that took the floor last night looked a lot more like the team that danced last March than the team that stubbed its toe in December.

Four games are a lot to hypothetically change. And I'd say we more than stubbed our toe in the non-conference. We shot ourselves in the foot and took a couple of toes off with it!

Rhode Island and Incarnate Word really grind my gears - bad teams, very close games. But if I picked a third, I'd say we'd beat Indiana again in a rematch. The record at the Vault is really good. Let's win all the home games and win 2 road games. NCAA is a long shot but it's a possibility.  Let's put it this way - with the way the season has gone, I find it a positive to have tough games to close out the year. You can earn a spot in the NIT or NCAA tournament with games like that. Plus, you never know what the B1G tournament holds.

I'm not hypothetically changing them.  People around here seem to be adopting this attitude like last year was a fluke and we've gone back to being bad like the Collier years.

I'm saying those are 4 games we all know we should have won.  We field a team that is certainly good enough to have won them in the sense that we have the players who have enough talent that we should have expected to win those games.  I realize we didn't win them, but it's because we played like crap rather than that we were beaten by a better team.

Flip those Ls to Ws and absolutely no one is complaining that we're bad or suggesting last year was a fluke.  And, as pointed out in my 104 to 54 thread, we wouldn't even have to flip all 4 of them to make a huge impact on our RPI.

In years past, we might have looked at a record like the one we have now and said, "We're not that far off; we're just missing some pieces to the puzzle."  This year, we look at that same record and are pissed that we stubbed our toes because we know we have the pieces.  It's not a matter of not being good enough; it was just a matter of taking care of business.

That's a big difference and helps put this season in some perspective.

Woah, that's not a fair assessment when you consider the run we had last yr. It truly was FAR MORE improbable that Nebraska would win 8 of 9 to end the yr than virtually any other outcome (perhaps only 9-0 & 0-9 as being the exceptions). I don't believe I've read anyone posting that the "Collier years" were headed our way again. Maybe I didn't see it... seems kind of dramatic, Normy. ((shrugs))
