Wisconsin Post Game Quotes:

 

UW Head Coach Bobbie Kelsey 

Opening Statement:
“In the first half, they shot almost 62 percent and we haven’t really experienced that here before. When you give up 53 points in the first half, you probably aren’t going to win the game. We fought hard and came back to a manageable point. We couldn’t get it down to 10, at one point it was down to 16 and we tried in that four minutes to get down to 10 but they couldn’t miss so credit to them. (Tear’a) Laudermill she couldn’t miss in the first half and we couldn’t buy a bucket. Defense was good and we tried running different plays but for some reason we just got a little confused. I’m still proud of the effort in the second half. We did pick it up there but it was a little too late.”

 

On Nebraska shooting 62 percent from the field in the first half:
“Some of it was that we were helping off the shooters. We have to recognize who is open at top. To their credit, they hit open shots. We had some open shots too but we didn’t hit them and that is the difference between winning and losing is putting the ball in the basket.

 

“As soon as we got (the lead) down, we were making a run with it, and she had to make a time out, Connie did and they regrouped and came back out. It’s a combination of understanding the defensive scheme that we are trying to do, keeping a shooter with at least a hand in their face. It’s just something to build on and we will look at the tape and figure out how we can be ready for next time.”

 

On adjusting to scorers like Laudermill:

“We had a plan for all of them. We know their tendencies and you watch the film. This is not the first time, she made 4-for-10 but her transitions really hurt us as well, going into the back of basket and getting a couple of layups. She is very quick and when you don’t start the right transition, they go past the ball. You are going to have some people that are able to go off with the ball. All of her points weren’t from the 3-point line and she scored every which way. Most of them were in the first half so we did a better job in the second half. But if you give up 21 points to a player in the first half, they don’t have to play the second half, they have done their damage.”

 

On trying to stop Laudermill:
“We can’t put Tessa (Cichy) on everybody. Other people have to carry their weight. If you are not scoring, then you have to play some defense. That is not only thing you can do on the floor. People get so caught up in offense but that is not where it’s at. I would rather have somebody stop somebody and get a couple of layups.

 

“We have plenty of scorers. We need some defenders.  We can get both then that would be even better. You can’t be one side of the basket but I would rather have it be all defense and no offense. If you want to be a complete basketball player, you have to contribute on all ends of the floor and in all areas, hustle points, get to the free throw line, get some transition baskets, stop somebody, hit your shots when you are open. It is a lot stuff people can do but some players just don’t understand that.

 

“We just keep preaching the same sermon. We have to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to help them. That is watching video, breaking things down but it is up to the individual player. If you are a competitor, you don’t want your player to score and you are going to go get the ball. That is just how it is and maybe some people are thinking about offense more than defense.”

On containing Laudermill:

“She is very quick and I think I’m quick too but she is really quick. I thought that I should have taken a few steps back and just guard her for the drive. I mean her three’s went in but not all of them so I think if I took away the drive that would have helped us more.”

On being matched up against Laudermill:

“Tear’a is a great player. I do what I can on defense but there is not any comfort when you lose and give up that many points. I didn’t guard her the whole game so I think I could have done stuff on other people but when I was guarding her, I was effective but she is not what killed us. I felt that I could have contributed more defensively elsewhere because I did make that decision to help off-shooters. That is what killed us.”

Opening statement HC Connie Yori:

“We played really well offensively but so did Wisconsin, particularly in the second half. It was a fun game to see the ball go through the hoops, I’m sure for the fans. We have some kids who had not necessarily scored a lot for us recently that got going.

“We were playing without one of our starters, Brandi Jeffery, who’s a senior. I think our three seniors—Tear’a Laudermill, Hailie Sample and Emily Cady— they all had good games. Was that a reflection of Brandi not playing, because they wanted to play well without her on the floor? I think that was. 

 

“I think Wisconsin is playing some good basketball. I know we got it going on offense today, but they played well enough on offense to win that game. They have a couple kids on their team that have really shown drastic improvement this year. They’re two of the most improved in the league— Tessa Cichy and Dakota Whyte. They’re going to win some games.”

On who is a top contender for the Big Ten title: 
“I think Maryland is pretty good. I think they showed that when they went to our place. We stayed with them for a half, and then they blew us out in the second half. They have a lot of pieces that are necessary to win a Big Ten championship and go deep in the NCAA tournament. Not to say that we’re going to hand them the title, but I do think that they’re across the board the most talented team and of course well-coached and disciplined as well. We’ll see, won’t we? 

 

“There’s a long ways to go (with an) 18-game schedule. I don’t think there’s any coach that wants an 18-game schedule. We have to play it; that’s what’s in front of us. There’s not a lot of rest, so I think in order to make a run and in order to perform, you’re going to have to, knock on wood, stay healthy. The good thing about tonight’s game is that we got some contribution from our three freshmen, who really had not played for us because they’re coming off injuries. That gave us a boost. 

 

“When it comes to winning the Big Ten Title, I think there’s a lot of factors that go into it. It’s going to be a long season. I think who stays healthy and who sticks with it, but I think Maryland has to be the favorite at this stage.”

 On the reason for her solid play at Wisconsin the last two times: 

“Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the cold weather. I just had a good shooting night, that’s all."

 

On if hitting the 3-pointers early opened up the driving lanes for her: 

 “Yes, I think that definitely opened up the driving lanes, because they wanted to take away my shot, but I’m blessed with my speed so I was able to go past and get layups. I thought that was good that I had that speed.”

It's early but she has offers from Purdue, LSU, Michigan State, Nebraska, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota and DePaul. Iowa and Michigan just recently joined the party. She's receiving interest from Notre Dame, Connecticut, Stanford and Louisville among others.
