Percentage wise alone humans beings over 6'10 are rare, The ones that can walk and chew bubble gum and play basketball are  elite top 20 players, we came close with ERobinson, real close, and we get close again, just have to be patient, but we do need a big man that can score in the post, it makes everything easier, draws fouls, when shots are not falling throw it inside and get easy points, changes opposing offense just being on the floor.

You don't need to be 6'10. Charles Barkley was a freak but he was a 6'4 post. We just need someone to be an actual threat down there and Pitchford should be able to do it if he wants.

So perhaps the focus is indeed shifting to bigs a little more, like I think it should slightly. I am confident Miles knows what he is doing, but he hasn't really coached at a level like this yet where pretty solid big men are needed to win, if not really good ones.

A good big was needed in the mountain west. Miles had one. Colton Iverson? We tried to recruit him too if my memory serves.

Edit: saw from Google he was a transfer and played one year. Blossomed though it seems

So much this.  Did you see the drop-step fake right, spin left, soft hook Rivers deployed the other night?  No reason Pitchford couldn't do that.  No reason at all.  He has the quicks to create the space, he has the length to get the shot off, and he has the touch to make it.

And he doesn't have to spend an entire possession trying to shove his way into the low blocks, which I understand isn't his game.  Go out, set a screen, make their big man chase you to the perimeter, then see if you can hustle back in and get good position in the lane without having to muscle your way in there.  There's more than one way to skin that cat.  And if it's still not there, go set another screen.

Eventually, he'll be open for an entry pass to a high-percentage shot.

The more weapons we have and the more places a defense has to find stops, the tougher we are to guard and the more successful we'll ultimately be.

Having a big man as a freshman with good footwork and strength is a rarity in college basketball. Most big guys come in with little footwork, touch, or strength. But I would argue that big men, in general, tend to make the biggest improvements in a 4 year college career. Instead of looking for a finished product, if I were a college bball coach I would focus on finding guys that have distinguishable roads to improvement (guys that have "upside"), and have the "can do" attitude and work ethic to improve

On Mike and Mike this morning, the discussion (brought about by Kobe's declaration regarding Europeon talent) was about the development of talent in the US.  One of the points of discussion was how US players go into AAU ball with a win or else attitude.  It is about displaying natural talent; while in Europe, especially if you are on a club team, it is about skill refinement and development.  Players in all positions are not being taught the correct fundamental approach to this fine game.
