Huskers Open New Year in Top 15 Showdown with Maryland
The No. 12 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena to start the New Year by battling No. 14 Maryland in the Huskers’ Big Ten home opener on Saturday afternoon.

Tip-off between the Big Red and the Terrapins is set for 3 p.m.

The Huskers will be looking to rebound from a 72-69 road loss at Minnesota. Nebraska led by as many as 17 points in the second half and held a 14-point lead with 7:50 left before the Gophers rallied for the win.

The Huskers were hindered by injuries and illness leaving them with just six scholarship players and one walk-on in uniform at Minnesota. Newcomers Jasmine Cincore, Anya Kalenta, Natalie Romeo and Chandler Smith all closed non-conference play on the injured list with foot/leg injuries. Kalenta, Romeo, sophomore Esther Ramacieri and redshirt Darrien Washington did not attend the Minnesota game because of a stomach virus.

Maryland comes to Lincoln for its first-ever Big Ten road game after running to an 87-78 win over Ohio State. Maryland has been the most potent offensive team in the Big Ten early in the season, leading the conference with 84.9 points per game while shooting a Big Ten-best 49.9 percent as a team from the floor. The Terps have hit 33.2 percent of their three-point attempts and rank second in the Big Ten with their 76.5 free throw percentage. Maryland’s plus-11.8 team rebounding margin also leads the Big Ten, including a conference-best 15.5 offensive rebounds per game.

Brionna Jones, a 6-3 sophomore center, is one of four Terps averaging double figures on the year, ranking third on the team with 12.0 points to go along with a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game. Laurin Mincy, a 6-0 senior guard, leads the Terrapins in scoring with 13.5 points per game. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough ranks second on the squad with 12.8 points per game.

Maryland has won the two previous meetings with Nebraska to lead the series 2-0.

Emily Cady’s 1,225 career points rank No. 17 in Husker history. She needs 18 points to catch Brooke Schwartz for 16th place.

Brandi Jeffery’s most impressive gains have come on the glass, where she ranks second among the Huskers and 12th in the Big Ten with 7.4 rebounds per game.

Nebraska is holding a Pregame Party beginning at 1 p.m. at Longwell's Bar and Grill.

We're going to need it.  I am very concerned about Maryland's physicality.  It would be great if Kalenta could give us at least a few minutes.  It's not a good match up for Havers.

From this mornings World Herald: Huskers wash hands of loss in time for stiff test

It may depend on how many players Nebraska has available. At Minnesota on Monday, Yori only dressed seven. Saturday, she may get 10, which includes three players returning to action: Point guard Natalie Romeo, defensive specialist Esther Ramacieri and forward Anya Kalenta. Romeo, Yori said, is most likely to see significant minutes Saturday. She had been suffering from a stress reaction in her foot. Ramacieri, who relieved starter Tear’a Laudermill while Romeo was out, had the flu, as did Kalenta, who was also suffering from a stress reaction.

Yori said she did not turn in to the Big Ten video of a controversial call in Monday’s game, in which Havers was whistled for pushing Minnesota center Amanda Zahui B. — the biggest player in the Big Ten — when replays showed Zahui flopped by hooking Havers’ arm and letting go to fall to the floor.

with all that has gone on in the program lately, (illness', injuries) i just don't think huskers are ready for this one. i'll be in front of tv cheering on the huskers, but, just gonna be awful tough.

My wife and I wont be making the trip to Lincoln either. With the weather coming in and her having a cold plus recovering from surgery we didn't feel like driving to Lincoln But we will be watching. GBR!!!

My best response after that debacle is: What was that?

Good to see Natalie out there again but where was Anya? Thought she could have helped underneath a little out there today.

I could vent so much but for now I better cut it short and let things simmer down, if you catch my drift!

Yikes... I watched this one on CBS... and I realized in the end... we got beat like that ON CBS.  I know the B10 is up this year, but we have got to pick it up.  We beat Duke, so we know we can do it.

I was very impressed with Maryland.  They had length, bulk, mobility, and shooters.  That's all there is.  Longest arms I have seen across the board.  Really bothered Rachel and our inside players.  Maryland  will win the Big barring injuries.  And they have only ONE senior.

I think we'll be OK, but we certainly didn't fight back when Maryland came out firing the second half.  Emily at times seems to defer. She needs to understand how good she is.  Hopefully Natalie will shake off the rust, Kalenta will get some minutes, and we'll get it going.

if maryland continues to play like this, very well likely could go through the season undefeated---definitely have the talent. believe the only thing that might bite them is the arrogance of a couple of players. had matt and jeff on the radio while watching cbs. made reference to that a couple of times. first half was so entertaining. then the meltdown.

How in the world did Maryland lose to Washington State? If not for that, their only loss is to Notre Dame. They should be ranked in the top 10. And they are so YOUNG. Big 10 will be a much better conference with them in it. Recruit wisely.

They made mention that if that stuffs goes on that there will be some T's coming their way at some of the road sites that they will play in.

I was able to watch this game at the arena, the only one I'll get to see.  Though the score was tied at half-time it was clear to see that Maryland was superior.  NU had to work too hard to score and the Terps length, skill, speed and power was too much for the Huskers.  5'11 and 6' guards are too much for our group.  Physical inside players are more than we can handle.  It's too bad Sample has to defend in the post, it would be nice to play her on the wing.    It was clear that Maryland was not going to allow Theriot to beat them.

MSU will be a tough bounce back game.

Romeo is very small, I don't think she is 5'7.  Would love to see Chandler S. on the court to see what she brings to the table (cliche).
