HB Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Regarding Norm's #22 Post: "I'm sensing a hunting trip in someone's future. Dlrrk, when are you back from Afghanistan? And do you like your duck pan-seared or roasted?" I come back to CONUS on 16 May. I bought that shotgun in Germany before the German anti-gun nuts took complete control. It's a Rizzini. It was fairly inexpensive. I used it as my skeet gun for a few years. I had the soft comb put on because my little cheek gets sore. Then I started shooting trap because my wife enjoyed trap more than skeet. I like to shoot ducks/geese... Attached is my girl's second deer (1st buck). It was several years ago... Awesome stuff, Dirrk. My own daughter of roughly the same age can catch fish like no one else, but I can't get her to hunt, for some reason. Thought the hunting dog would get it done, but even that didn't work. I have access to excellent deer and waterfowl hunting close to Lincoln....but don't want to break any NCAA rules..... Quote
caveman Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 i love duck hunting at my dad's blind. the breakfast is great and the ducks don't seem to bother us much. an athlete that hunts. no pondering on this one needed, already love her. though we owe you thanks for your service in the military, i'd also like to thank and congratulate you for having the good sense to get your daughter out of the house and into nature. dlrrk Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Regarding the transition from HS to BIG... Nobody can say how well HS basketball talent transitions to BIG basketball. I can tell you this about Rachel Blackburn... Heart, hustle, grit, and a will to win in HS will transition directly and without degradation to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Quote

We are fired up to have Rachel joining the Huskers! Quote
dlrrk Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Thanks All-American... I served, and went to war, in the All American division... The 82nd Airborne Division, America's Guard of Honor. I told Rachel's mom this morning that Rachel is almost , as we say in the Army, a "Two Digit Midget." Meaning... She has less than 100 days until she leaves home and arrives in Lincoln. In the Army if you're about to move to a different post, you're getting "short"... hence midget... Rachel is fired up about being a Husker... Her season has three more weeks (assuming they make it to the state championship tournament). Immediately following the season she is going to begin a tough weigh lifting, running, and basketball shooting program. The HS has one of those machines that shoots the ball back to the shooter (We bought half of it). She mentioned yesterday about doing more squats in preparation for Lincoln. She has our guidance regarding arriving in Lincoln prepared to learn the college game and compete. She fully understands that there will be a learning curve. Here is an example of what you can expect... Back on/about 5 Jan Leavenworth played Rock Bridge, MO. Rock Bridge was ranked #10 HS in the nation. Leavenworth won 46-39. Rock Bridge's star is Mizzou-commit Sophie Cunningham. Rachel was tasked to guard her. It was Rachel's first game back due to a broken hand. Cunningham had previously averaged ~25 points per game. Against Leavenworth she scored 10. Cunningham was recently voted a McDonald's HS All-American. My point... Cunningham is real division one competition who Rachel shut down. Obviously, Minnesota's Zowie (spelling) is a different player, and we'll see how that plays out. However, Dolittle and many of the others can be handled. We know that she has flown under the radar of most Nebraska fans, and that's ok with her. I can sit here all day and tell you how good she is, but it means nothing. Talk is cheap. The only thing that matters is how she does upon arrival in Lincoln. Coach Yori will be the one who decides how she measures up. Bugeaters1, redsteve and KarlHessEatMy.... 3 Quote
redsteve Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 dlrrk.....we're very happy Rachel's coming to Nebraska for the obvious reasons. We can tell she's a dedicated hard worker that wants to compete, and make herself, and the team better. As far as the fans are concerned that's exactly the kind of player we love to see on the team. Rachel hasn't flown under our radar, thats for sure......we (the fans) can't wait to have her here on campus, and in Husker RED ! Good luck to you..... and thank you.....for your serving our country ! Quote
Fastbreaker Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 From these reports it sounds if we may have found our next Hailie Sample. And people who know me know that I consider Hailie one of the best defensive players and one of the most underrated players in Husker history. Quote

And people who know me know that I consider Hailie one of the best defensive players and one of the most underrated players in Husker history. I thought of Sample as well Fastbreaker. I hope she has a little bit better scoring power than Hallie does. Quote
HB Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 My understanding is that Rachel is a natural post player. Sample was a wing (2/3) until this year; she was never expected to be a post player. But perhaps I'm wrong about Rachel. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 I just think it’s fantastic to hear from dirrk periodically! The enthusiasm in his post is contagious! His words have got me fired up as well. I’m getting really anxious now to see Rachel play. And he’s right, Rachel’s probably flying under the radar for most Husker fans. Mostly because we don’t hear or see as much about her here as they do in Kansas. But I’m very encouraged to hear she can defend as well as she is now. You know that will only get better as she gets used to playing the college game. No doubt Rachel’s going to write her own chapter as a Husker. But, I think you have to go back to Danielle Page if you want to compare past players similar to what Rachel will bring. And as we all know, Danielle developed into a fantastic player for the Huskers. You know she’s got to be super excited about the trip down under this summer too! It’s too bad Leavenworth isn’t a little closer or All-American and I would be down there taking in a few of her games. Quote

Unfortunately, it's the only place she ever played. We the non-basketball parents would have forced the issue, but we didn't know what we didn't know. Quote

I was not comparing Rachel to Hailie because of position, I was comparing because I see a lot of Hailie's toughness, defensive play and overall intelligence in Rachel. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Major props go out to Rachel and her fellow Leavenworth Pioneers on advancing to the Kansas Girls State Basketball quarterfinals and doing it in spectacular fashion. With 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Leavenworth Lady Pioneers' 62-16 win over F.L. Schlagle High School, the Lady Stallions banked in a running jumper from 10 feet out. A forgettable play, at best, but its importance lies in its singularity. The shot was the first made field goal scored against the Lady Pioneers in nearly seven quarters of sub-state basketball as they cruised to their third-straight sub-state championship. "It's hard to hold someone to no field goals at all," senior center Rachel Blackburn said. "It just shows how hard we work, how important defense is to us." Blackburn led with a double-double, finishing the night with a team-high 11 points and 10 rebounds. http://www.leavenworthtimes.com/article/20150306/SPORTS/150309467/2000/NEWS Quote

Row6Seat10 Posted March 12, 2015 Report Posted March 12, 2015 Leavenworth Lady Pioneers advance to the State semifinals on Friday! Leavenworth pulled away in the second half for a 49-31 victory over Newton High School in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament at the Kansas Expocentre. LaToshia Jones pumped in 16 points and had six rebounds while Rachel Blackburn added 12 points and 12 rebounds as second-seeded Leavenworth improved to 21-2 and advanced to the final four of the state tournament for the 11th time in school history. The victory sends the Lady Pioneers into Friday's semifinals, where they will face the winner of Wednesday's late game between Kapaun-Mt. Carmel of Wichita and Seaman of Topeka. A victory Friday in the semifinals would vault the Leavenworth girls into the fourth championship game appearance in school history. http://www.leavenworthtimes.com/article/20150311/SPORTS/150319770/2001/SPORTS Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 One win away from being named State Champs. http://www.leavenworthtimes.com/article/20150313/SPORTS/150319564/?Start=2 The Leavenworth Lady Pioneers will get a chance to defend their Class 5A state tournament championship, but it took a big effort in Friday night's semifinals to earn that right. The Lady Pioneers withstood an impressive display of shooting from Kapaun Mt. Carmel standout Sam Bachrodt to clinch a 45-35 victory over the Lady Crusaders in a hard-fought victory at the Kansas Expocentre. The victory sends the Lady Pioneers (22-2) into Saturday's championship game against Blue Valley Southwest Rachel was saddled a lot of the game with foul troubles. Hope she stays out of foul trouble tonight and comes away a winner. Quote
Row6Seat10 Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 Well that didn't take too much time and in workman like fashion! Congratulations to Rachel and her Leavenworth Lady Pioneers as they repeat as 5A Kansas State Champions with a 52 - 30 victory over Blue Valley Southwest! Quote
Cazzie22 Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 The Pioneers had to be a pretty good team. Quote
