I loved Doc Sadler.  Everyone knows that.  I was so appreciative of his open practice policy and I took advantage of it, as many of you know.  I defended his coaching when others were critical and I thought, and still think, that he was good at Xs and Os.

But the one thing I always kind of criticized him for was recruiting.  I'm not sure what his recruiting philosophy was or if he even had one.  But one thing about his recruiting philosophy of which I am quite sure is that he failed to emphasize recruiting shooters.

And when you look back on some stats from last year and compare them with, say, Creighton, it's pretty eye-opening.

Creighton returns 6 players from last year's squad who shot at least 35% from beyond the arc with at least 50 attempts.  Three of those guys shot better than 40% and one of them almost shot 50% from beyond the arc.

We had no one on last year's squad who meets those criteria of at least 50 attempts and better than 35%.

Heck, we had no one on last year's squad with at least 40 attempts who shot better than 35% from beyond the arc.

In fact, we had only 1 player last year with more than 5 attempts who shot better than 35% from beyond the arc.

One.  That was Shavon Shields who shot 35.9% on 39 attempts.

Let that sink in a bit.

If you want to compare the poor shooting teams of Doc Sadler to someone, why wouldn't it be the Colorado St teams of Tim Miles?  I can tell you without looking they were excellent shooting teams and the players he has subsequently brought into Nebraska have been shooters as well...Fuller, Hawkins, and Webster can and will shoot.

It's getting to the point where we need to hold an intervention here before you do something like starting a post about whether or not the 93 team would have won a tournament game if Doug McDermott was on the roster.

\We're not mad.  We're all your friends here.  We want to get you the help you need.

The problem that BCS teams run into is that it takes a certain type of athlete (or at least that is what most coaches think) to play at the high level of play in those conferences but some athletes are not always great shooters.  I think a lot of shooters get crossed of the list by BCS coaches because they don't think they are good enough athletes to hold there own at that level and there are only so many good athlete, great shooters to go around.

Got a chance to watch Creighton practice a couple weeks ago, ad Coach Mac talked about this some.  Said the MVC was a great shooting league (as are some other mid-majors), but they generally didn't have the ability to get to the rim like many BCS-conference schools.  Transitioning into the Big East, he said that was a major area of concern.

True, and we had a couple of guys last year who could get to the rim.  We just didn't have guys who could fill it up very well.  That's a good point.  There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Thought it would be interesting to compare shooting percentages between Colorado State and Nebraska during the last three years of Doc's tenure.

Shooting (All/3 Pt%)                    2011/12                     2010/11                       2009/10

CSU                                           47.1/40.0                     46.7/33.3                   43.0/35.3

Huskers                                     42.7/32.4                     46.1/31.4                   44.0/39.7

Generally CSU was better in both categories except 2009/10 where the Huskers were better in both categories. Not sure what conclusion to draw from this but found the comparisons interesting.

I am not sure you can draw general conclusions, since the 11/12 season appears to be the only year with a statistically significant differences in CSU's favor...and that is before you attempt to factor in NU faced a significantly tougher conference schedule of defenders.

Now, on the other hand, if we shoot what CSU did in 11/12..we will be dancing!

And I think we are going to see a significant uptick with our shooting %s!

If we are within sniffing distance of CSU's 40% from 3 in 11/12...we will all be smiling....big-time!

Keep in mind the rebuilding job Miles had at CSU. It wasn't until the last year or two of his tenure that he had enough recruiting time to have all "his" players in place. I'd say that's why the shooting percentages got better every year at CSU.

It is important to note that shooters are so much better when then have their legs strong AND under them.  We now have a number of players that can get to the rim.  When you can penetrate, you can then kick the ball out for open looks.  I think this year we will see our shooting percentage go up...
