If chalk holds from here and NU beats NW, NU would be the #10 seed and play #15 Penn St on Wednesday. #7 Mich St would be next on Thursday.

(If a few upsets happen, NU could get as high as #7 I think.)

1. UCLA (16 - 1)
2. USC (15 - 2)
3. Ohio St (14 - 4)
4. Maryland (12 - 6) / Above Michigan based on head-to-head record (1-0).
5. Michigan (12 - 6) / Below Maryland based on head-to-head record (0-1).
6. Illinois (11 - 7) / Above Mich St and Oregon based on winning percentage against #4 teams [Maryland and Michigan] (1-1).
7. Mich St (11 - 7) / Above Oregon and below Illinois based on winning percentage against #4 teams [Maryland and Michigan] (1-2).
8. Oregon (11 - 7) / Below Illinois and Mich St based on winning percentage against #4 teams [Maryland and Michigan] (0-2).
9. Indiana (10 - 8 ) / Above Nebraska based on head-to-head record (1-0).
10. Nebraska (10 - 8 ) / Below Indiana based on head-to-head record (0-1).
11. Iowa (9 - 9) / Above Minnesota based on head-to-head record (1-0).
12. Minnesota (9 - 9) / Below Iowa based on head-to-head record (0-1).
13. Wash (7 - 11)
14. Wisconsin (4 - 14)
15. Penn St (3 - 15)

-------
16. N'western (2 - 14)
17. Rutgers (2 - 16)
18. Purdue (2 - 16)

If NU loses to NW and chalk holds, NU falls to #11 and would play #14 Wisconsin - #6 Illinois would be Thursday.

I don't think so.  That sounds excuse -ey   The players and the coaches very well know the importance of getting their focus on come game day. That should be more well practiced than any ball handling or shooting technique.  And one would think that four seniors want very badly to go out on a high note - and the underclassmen want that for the seniors.  And going to sleep on defense for 20 minutes is not moot.  Wait, actually it was not just 20 minutes, it was game long, it just got worse as the minutes ticked on.

Another topic - the recurring struggle to contain guards who are long, "athletic", ond and quick-nimble.  In her freshman season and midway thru the next I really thought - or at least hoped - that Moriarty would fit that mold and be that weapon.  She had the size, ball handling, speed, quickness, explosiveness, under the basket agility ... i thought the tool box was full.  We saw glimpses of it every year, but only that.

Yesterday, watching UW's Ladine, I was thinking "she is the picture of what I hoped Moriarty would become"

Nissley at 6'0 has the height but does not have the foot speed. Hake has the foot speed but at 5'8" can get into trouble with defenders 4-5 inches taller. Agree Moriarty really never leveled up from where she was at in HS. That happens sometimes players that look promising in HS just can not translate it to the college game.

Still 7 games left tomorrow, but if chalk holds, NU looks like the #10 or #11 seed with a win and #11 or #12 with a loss.

With a couple of upsets, NU could still get to #8 or #9 with a win and get the bye, but it would take a couple of huge upsets. The key potential upsets that can help are:

  • Purdue over Indiana
  • Wisconsin over Iowa
  • Washington over Oregon

If NU wins and two or three of the upsets happen, NU likely is #8 or #9. If one of the upsets happens, NU probably can't do better than #10. If no upsets happen, that drops NU to #11.

NU is also #11 with a loss to NW and a Washington loss. NU drops to #12 with a loss to NW and a Washington win.

  • As a #10 seed, Purdue is the probable opponent.
  • At #11, Wisconsin is the likely opponent.
  • At #12, probably would play Minnesota
