B1G Remaining Opponents

Illinois: Iowa, @Purdue

Nebraska: Indiana, @Michigan State

Purdue: @Michigan, Illinois

Indiana: @Nebraska, Michigan

Iowa: @Illinois, Non-con

Michigan: Purdue, @Indiana

Mich St: @Minnesota, Nebraska

Maryland: Non-Con, Penn St

OSU: Northwestern, @Rutgers

Penn St: Rutgers, @Maryland

Minnesota: Michigan St, @Northwestern

Rutgers: @Penn St, Ohio St

Northwestern: @Ohio St, Minnesota

Interesting finish as a bunch of teams at the top all play each other and the bottom mostly play each other.

Officially eliminated from B1G tournament play is Northwestern. They started really well and fell off a cliff.

Rutgers must sweep to make the B1G tournament. 2/4 wins for them are against us.  Wahh wahhh.  Wasted opportunity.

Maryland and Iowa have the least chances to move up as each had just 1 remaining series.

Our series this weekend is HUGE.  That didn’t appear like it’d be the case 2-3 weeks ago, but Indiana turned it on going 7-2 in their last three B1G series.  They started off 5-3 in B1G play.

Would greatly benefit us for Illinois and Purdue to lose 1-2 this weekend.  Purdue is most likely to sweep.  Iowa will be throwing everything they got to try and cement their B1G tournament spot against Illinois.

That last weekend could be big with a chance at a sweep for us AND Purdue and Illinois likely beating up on each other.

B1G Remaining Opponents

Illinois: @Purdue

Nebraska: @Michigan State

Purdue: Illinois

Indiana: Michigan

Iowa: Non-con

Michigan: @Indiana

Mich St: Nebraska

Maryland: Penn St

OSU: @Rutgers

Penn St: @Maryland

Minnesota: @Northwestern

Rutgers: Ohio St

Northwestern: Minnesota

- B1G Tourney Eliminated: Rutgers, Northwestern

- B1G Tourney Clinched: Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa

- Could still win regular season title: Illinois, Nebraska, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan

Series Notes: Every final series has some type of B1G tournament implications.  From just sneaking in to winning the regular season title and capturing that #1 seed!

- Purdue needs a sweep for a chance at a title.  Illini need a sweep to ensure title.

- Nebraska needs a sweep and Illini loss, 2/3 and Illini 2 losses or 1/3 and Purdue sweep.  MSU is in a 3 way tie for the final two spots AND PSU/Minny are just a game back.  They’ll be fighting like hell this weekend.  A sweep for them ensures their ticket to the B1G tourney.

- IU/Mich are both tied in the standings and a sweep for either could put them in position for a share or outright title. Both need at least 1 win to ensure B1G tourney.

- Iowa can’t move up, but did enough to clinch Omaha.

- Maryland is in that 3 way tie for the last spot and PSU is just a game back.  A series win for PSU ties them with Maryland. A PSU sweep leapfrogs UMD.  A TON of implications in this one!  Maryland is a legit shot to miss Omaha should they lose 2.

- OSU is in that 3 way tie mentioned above.  Rutgers is already eliminated. Do the Scarlet Knights show any fight in their last home games and overall games of the year?  OSU would love a sweep here.

- Golden opportunity for the gophers as they end the season with NW at home.  NW is already eliminated.  A golden opportunity for the gophers to sweep.  A series win for Minny has them feeling ok, but a sweep would have them feeling a lot better.

Watchability Rankings:

1. Illinois/Purdue

2. Maryland/Penn St

3. Nebraska/Michigan St

4. Indiana/Michigan

5. Gophers/NW

5. OSU/Rutgers

Last: Iowa… always Iowa.

Pitching stats

ERA

2024 4.51

2023 4.64

BB/9

2024 2.93

2023 3.48

SO/9

2024 8.67

2023 8.53

Not as much of a difference as I would have guessed with Childress taking over.

Friday night probably didn't help matters with a 7-run 9th inn., so what's it today after two better pitched outings.....

Hope we're ready to go this weekend with a B1G title on the line.

MSU's pitching is an absolute mess right now, so our bats need to go to work and go get the sweep.

Thursday will be the toughest pitching matchup, so if we can survive that one, MSU has allowed an average of 12.7 runs per game in games 2 and 3 of their last 5 B1G series. Have to take advantage at the plate and make it easy on our pitching staff for a change.

B1G teams still in action yesterday with mid-week games.  Finals look like the below.

Why on earth would you play a mid week game on a short week?

Looks like a few were canceled or involved a cross-state rival.... if that's how you have to do it, then so be it. They must have excellent, deep pitching staffs. That's the only way it makes any sense at all...

Crazy year - looked like our B1G schedule was pretty tough, but all 4 of our non-plays will make the tourney. Maybe that's because they didn't lose a series to NU. 😁

Purdue owes us to beat Illinois tonight after the garbage PU pulled two years ago.

Is there a bigger pile of @#R$!F# in the B1G in any sport than Purdue baseball? I mean how many times over a multi-year span can they screw us over without even playing us? (I reserve the right to change my mind on this take in about 12 hours.)

What sucks about Maryland is we now only have 1 team (Illinois) who will be a Q1 neutral site game.  So can't boost that metric much in Omaha.  And even then, the Illini are 1 bad loss away from a Q2 neutral site game.

2 seed means afternoon games both Tuesday and Thursday (should we win Tuesday)
Who is going? I can't make it Tuesday, doctors appointment. But I can on Thursday.

Big Ten Tourney Schedule - https://bigten.org/base/article/blt739b9d24b60d2cb5/

Maybe not the best sign, but only 3 (Indiana, Ohio St, Iowa) of NU's 8 conference opponents made the B1G tourney - Maryland, Mich St, Rutgers, NW, and Minnesota all missed the B1G tourney.

Other NU Opponents in Postseason

Most of these tournaments start Tuesday - pretty amazing how well NU's non-con opponents performed this season

Big XII Tournament

Oklahoma - #1 seed

K-State - #6 seed

Kansas - #7 seed

Texas Tech - #10 seed

Baylor - DNQ

(The Big XII invites 10 teams - might be a format the B1G adopts next season - https://big12sports.com/tournaments/?id=1035 - it looks like they play double elimination up to the final four, and then it becomes single elimination)

WAC Tournament

Grand Canyon - #1 seed
