Coach Bolt is not screwing around - to make the changes he's making this offseason shows he's prioritizing trying to improve the program and winning big over long-time relationships - that's some of the Van Horn coming out in him. 😁 It'd be way easier to just keep the status quo and hope it works out, especially in a sport like baseball where the eyes aren't on you 12 months out of the year - instead he's not afraid to make tough changes in hopes of big rewards.

Hope these are the right changes. Fall ball is going to be verrrrry interesting.

It was an interesting fall - looks like we have lots of depth to spread around in the batting order - can really match up well vs the starting pitcher - lots of lefties vs a RHP and vice versa. We'll see if they all produce when the lights come on for real, but sounds like the bats came around faster than expected this fall and from a bigger variety of players. Spreading the load among more players is a good way to try to replace the loss of Matthews & Anderson.

Pitching was up and down in the fall, but NU held out a few top arms to keep them fresh after big workloads in the spring and summer. Tough to replace your #1, #2, setup guy, and closer, but they like a lot of different arms they have available. We'll see who steps up between now and mid-February, as I'm not sure we have a clear-cut trio of weekend starters yet. Sometimes that's good - it means there's lots of competition and you have plenty of depth out of the pen. I think more often it's a struggle, though - you really want that shutdown Friday guy to be pretty obvious from the jump, and you then can define roles for everyone else from there. You don't want to be auditioning Friday night guys through the non-con weekends. Childress may need to work a bit of magic between now and the opener to help someone take a jump.

Hopefully the Big Red will be a fun team to watch all spring season. Looking forward to seeing how they do in the B1G and nationally. GBR

WHAT DOES PORNSTACHE MEAN?

A pornstache is a mustache that makes the wearer look sleazy, predatory, or cheaply groomed.

It can appear in many different forms and styles, although the most common one is a thick, heavy mustache with slightly elongated ends and no accompanying facial hair. However, a pornstache is generally identified by its effect on the appearance of the wearer, and not by any specific traits of its own.

I thought maybe you had first hand knowledge.

Doesn't sound like our pitching questions were quite sorted out in the individual / small group workouts leading up to the first official practice.

We have plenty of arms we like, but finding the right guys for each role -- and figuring out who can be consistent -- has been a challenge leading up to the start of practice -- and that starts with finding the Friday guy. It's too bad we don't have a softer opening weekend to try to work out some roles, but maybe the guys will lock in on the bump when the lights come on. And there's still several key practices to try to work things out.

With so many question marks and with so many potentially good arms, the coaches probably will have a pretty short leash on guys, especially the first few weekends.

Not sure we can put too much on weekend 1 ... or 2 for that matter. We will have a ton of new faces in the lineup and on the bump, and asking them to be lights out from the start against those high major southern teams is asking a lot. Grand Canyon in weekend 2 is no slouch either - they really tend to play well against the northern teams that go down there early in the season - and they have a hitter-friendly park. They did lose to Michigan and Mich St early last season, but they went 2-0 vs Ohio State and 1-0 vs Tennessee, too, so we'll see.

We certainly will battle on those first two weekends, but if we are over .500 after those first 7 games, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

NU feels like a team that may need a few weekends to really get ramped up and to figure out who is ready to actually excel at this level. Hope I'm wrong and they start red hot, but it'd be pretty surprising.
