Huskers Glad to be Home to Face Gophers

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home for just the second time in 24 days to take on Minnesota on Saturday. Tip-off between the Huskers (5-17, 1-9 Big Ten) and the Golden Gophers (11-11, 2-7 Big Ten) at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln is set for 5 p.m.

Approximately 20 women’s basketball alumni will be recognized during Saturday’s while participating in an Alumni Weekend event.

Nebraska has been challenged by the toughest schedule in school history. Nebraska’s strength of schedule ranks No. 9 nationally. Minnesota’s No. 6 strength of schedule leads the Big Ten. Nebraska and Minnesota are the only schools in the Big Ten with top-25 schedule strengths this season.

The Huskers are led by 6-4 sophomore forward Jessica Shepard, who is averaging a double-double with 18.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. She owns 21 career double-doubles, including 11 this season, after tying her season high with 28 points and adding 13 rebounds at No. 15 Ohio State. It was her fifth double-double in Big Ten play this season.

Shepard is just the fourth Husker in history to produce double-digit double-doubles in two seasons in her career, joining first-team All-Americans Jordan Hooper and Karen Jennings and four-time All-Big Ten choice Emily Cady.

Shepard enters the Minnesota game needing 18 points to become the 32nd player in Husker history to reach 1,000 career points. She will become just the second sophomore to accomplish the feat, joining All-American and current WNBA forward Jordan Hooper.

Shepard could reach 1,000 points faster than any player in Husker history. Hooper achieved 1,000 in her 60th career game. Shepard will be playing her 54th career game on Saturday against Minnesota.

Nebraska freshmen Nicea Eliely (7.5 ppg) and Hannah Whitish (7.4 ppg) could become the first pair of Husker freshmen to both average more than 7.0 points per game since 1983-84.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Minnesota 11-8 Nebraska owns a 6-3 series edge as Big Ten foes.

PROBABLE STARTERS:

Nebraska Cornhuskers
32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - So. - F
22 - Allie Havers - 6-5 - Sr. - C
3 - Hannah Whitish 5-9 - Fr. - G
5 - Nicea Eliely - 6-1 - Fr. - G
34 - Jasmine Cincore - 5-10 - Jr. - G

Scouting Minnesota

Coach Marlene Stollings brings her third Minnesota team to Lincoln trying to snap a three-game losing streak. The Golden Gophers are 11-11 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten, just ahead of the Huskers in the Big Ten standings.

All seven of Minnesota’s Big Ten losses have been by double digits and the Golden Gophers are 0-4 in Big Ten road games. Minnesota owns Big Ten home victories over Wisconsin and Illinois.

Minnesota owns the best strength of schedule in the Big Ten, coming in at No. 6 nationally.

As a team, Minnesota is shooting 40.6 percent from the field, including 32.2 percent from three-point range. The Gophers own a plus-0.7 rebound margin, but a minus-1.5 turnover margin, while shooting 71.5 percent at the free throw line. Minnesota is averaging 75.3 points, but allowing 75.2 points per game.

Minnesota’s Big Ten foes are averaging 78.1 points per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field, including 34.2 percent at the line. The Gophers own a minus-4.0 turnover margin in Big Ten play.

Husker Nuggets

Jessica Shepard is the second Husker in history to record 10 or more double-doubles in back-to-back seasons. She owns 11 double-doubles this season.

Shepard leads the Huskers with averages of 18.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

Shepard needs 18 points and nine rebounds against Minnesota to reach 1,000 points and 500 boards.

Nebraska freshmen Nicea Eliely and Hannah Whitish have helped solidify the Huskers’ starting five, while providing hope for the future for a young Husker roster.

Whitish, 2016 Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year, ranks third on the team in scoring (7.4 ppg), including 9.5 points per game in Big Ten play. She leads the Huskers with 34 threes, which ranks as the fourth-best total by a freshman in school history.

Nebraska’s freshmen are 37-of-43 (.860) at the free throw line in Big Ten play, while the Huskers as a team are shooting 65.9 percent.

Nebraska senior Allie Havers has competed in 118 consecutive games since the first game of her freshman season in 2013-14. The Huskers own a 70-48 record in those contests over the last four years.

The Huskers have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 273 straight regular-season games dating back to a loss at UTEP in 2008.

Nebraska has hit at least two three-pointers in 152 consecutive games.

really hoping huskers can put together a great game-----for the fans, yes, but, most of all for themselves! GBR!

yes, been a tough season, but, hard to believe the season will be down to about a handful of games (not counting BTT).

Yes, it will be a tough game, but we have a chance.

Can we lower turnovers substantially, and vastly improve the defense, and not give up so many points?? Those seem to be our areas in greatest need of improved play.  I think we're about last in the B1G in points allowed.

We've made improvement overall, so it's time to take it to another step. The games at home so we have an advantage. Be loud crowd !!!

goofer fans will go bananas if huskers can win this one. they are already labeling this game, if a loss----"it would be embarrassing".

i am not sure i would put it in that category as the records aren't that much different. maybe goofers have been a little more competitive i some games, but, still losses. the call for Jim Peterson and/or Lindsey Whalen will grow louder--------or, at least someone else to take the reigns.

limit bell and/or wagner and huskers will have a good shot.

I'm hoping and thinking Ignatius Hoops and cohort's are going to be embarrassed tomorrow evening whoop! We've have just as good of big girls as they do right now perhaps better. They have those two guards you mentioned that lead the way for them, so if we can somewhat shut them down the out come could be quite favorable for the home team.

Our most important task from the get-go is taking care of the ball, that's been our main nemesis to falling behind big at the start games in the past. Secondly, we need to make a 40 minute concentrated effort on the defensive end and rebound consistently. I thought we had one of our better outputs on offense against Ohio St, but too many early turnovers caused the Huskers to get behind and play catch up that whole game.

We've had almost a whole week to get ready for this matchup, so what I'd really would like to see is a rejuvenated and focused Husker team come out on fire, ready to go from the start.

Different calls on opposite ends of floor didn't expect anything different from our veteran group of officials. Have seen them on TV with other teams and it's the same way.

Suppose to be three of the best. But a ref can sure control a game big time.

Too bad Emily Wood couldn't get that last shot to go down, had it went in it would not only brought the house down it would have created the best memory she could have ever hoped for playing for the Huskers!

I thought the Huskers number one problem in this game was our overall lack of conditioning which really began to show up in the 4th quarter and especially the overtime.  We seemed to get out hustled for every loose ball and our failure to BOX OUT on the defensive end had me fit to be tied all game.

All though Emily Wood and Nicea E showed fairly good effort hustling and fighting for loose balls as did Havers at times. I also thought we could have pushed the ball a lot better up the court after rebounds. There were quite a few times we had someone breaking down court ahead of Minnesota  and the person bringing the ball up the court didn't look ahead or simply just didn't throw it. Also thought we missed a lot of opportunities to get Allie the ball more within 10 feet of the bucket on the baseline and in the middle of the paint. She had her best shooting game of the season and we just didn't get her the ball enough when she was open.

Cut our turnovers down to 14, but still forced some ridiculous passes in to places where they just should not have been thrown.

Hannah Whitish finished with a good stat line 8 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.

Darn it would have been nice to walk out of PBA with our 6th win, so close! Fairly nice crowd showed up for 5 win team.

Just finished watching a recording.  Two things, they had Carly Wagner and we wasted early possessions in OT.   Off topic, watched the K-State Texas game in Austin tonight, tight well played game.  The Page sisters had 5 points.  Kaylee started and Laney played about 3 minutes total.  KSU is solid and had a chance against a very talented and deep Texas squad.  Kaylee is a little outmatched at the 4 but was set up for a late 3 to put JSU ahead.  Laney made a nice left hand drive for her basket.

the only question or comment i have about pushing the ball--------huskers were more short-handed than usual. imo, if they would have continuously tried to push the ball, the game may have never made it to OT. huskers may have tried to pace themselves a bit. no doubt, there were times they could have took off.  i heard the announcers even mention the "box out" problem. agree with Row6Seat10, the pass to woody near the end of regulation put me right on the edge of my seat and my eyes got big. man, i wish that would have went in for her. the team fought hard-------yeah, some things to pick at, but....

It was really one of the best games overall we've played. ...but...there's always a but...we don't seem to be able to stop the other teams scorer. Without a defensive stopper, we get 28 scored on us by one player, and that in it's self was the difference.

Our overall rebounding, free  throw shooting, and even turnovers were better, by the team as a whole. Assist high numbers indicates we are progressing  a lot. But we have one player that gets the passing award for the game.

When it came to late game time, we couldn't hit the crucial.baskets. Low percentage on the shooting. Got to put the ball through the hoop to win. Lack of experience showed late, and may have simply run out of gas to some extent.

Compared to where we started from this year, we are a different team now. We're leaning the "system" and we're playing together much better, more in control of what we're trying to accomplish. Very encouraged by last night's game...even if it hurts a bit to loose in overtime, after a great effort.
