Sorry but I don't see that there is a problem. Coach Amy isn't going to blink an eye when she has a chance to get a top 100 player. Particularly a 6-5 inside player. Maggie or anyone else. This whole discussion is silly.....over and out on this thread.

99.9% of us here think that way..... Period.
-
I notice it too. KInda think "experience" playing (together) on D1 level is the factor. This may be Coach Amy's first team with a full (nearly) experienced roster. About two years together now. We had only one freshmen on the floor, but she didn't seem to have the deer in headlights look at all. .....No walk on's this year. Maddies new to the team, but has ton's of D1 expereince...plus a very high BBall IQ. Plus...and you might think I'm full of it.....Coach Cook has met with this team (and the coaches at other times) a couple of times this off season. One of his strenghts besides X's and O's... is developing a team strength of cohesiveness, toughness, keeping your head on straight, and sharing. Wanting other team mates to do well... no selfishness, I guess you could say. Anyway, Coach Amy's new team gives you that feeling too. .....IMHO anyway.

Yes, the opponent wasn't much of an opponent, but we were way to deep for them. For what ever it's worth we made them look like they did...been a few years ago, we didn't open so confident. Like mentioned already.....Issie and Allison are at their next level. You kind of knew Issie had it in her, but the "freshman" is long gone in Weidner. Both played great. Krull will be a huge asset this year. Hake is a scrappy little guard,...,not a lot of shy freshman showing. Brady, Annika, and everyone else were ready to play...no wake me up when the lights come on. Nice first game all in all. Let the 3's rain down the bucket :)

UNO's coach Banks is a newer head coach, has a good background, and is known as good recruiter, and is in the process of building the team. We'll see how they've progressed. We, on the other hand need to jell fairly quickly, as the Creighton game isn't far away. Time for the game faces to appear ! May get a clearer picture of the guard situation ? .

Is this the basketball forum,. or am I in the wrong place ?

With all the subbing it's a little hard to get a feel for what/who they'll turn into. But it was intentional. Coach wanted to look at them all. A bit chaotic. A little rusty of course. The guard positions have many different players to sort out a pecking order so to speak. Shot blocking was very good. Down low may be our initial stength, in the beginning games at least. Issie was spot on. No layoff hangover at all. She's going to have a great year. Markowski was dominate on the boards as expected. Double-double out of the chute. Mendelson, Mendelson, Mendelson. From the videos I've seen she's a little like Issie.....can be mobile, but 6-5. Kendall M is turning into what I hoped for, from early on. Been her advocate for a long time. She needs turn up her offensve game to the next level...she's getting there. Lot's of potential. Wasn't much opportunity last night to see everything Maddie and Hake can contribute. We have to work on coming up with Sam's 12-15 pts/gm we're missing ...from the supporting cast. And her huge asset of driving to the boards. Good start though. Full speed ahead !
-
While it's just an exhibition game...still anxious to see how Markowski and Weidner have matured. Hope to see Markowski bloom this year. Also can't wait to see Hake live and in person....And Maddie. And all the others there's no time to talk about. Games starts in a few min. Here we go boys !

I see the Washburn game is on BTN + !:00

I do what Bugs is describing, The annual subscription, then after the volleyball and basketball seasons, I cancel my subscription. (Unless there'as some reason/sport to contimue).......Then renew again like I did when volleyball started. Maybe BTN+ has changed somehow in the last few months ?
-
Apparently Cook's done that a couple or more. times in the last year or so. If there's anyone in women's sports I'd want talking my own womens team, it would be him.
-
Used it several years now. I cast it on big screen TV. It's great that way... just like a regular cable/tv broadcast.

You guys all realize what Sunday Oct 30 at 1:00 is ??...right ??

Two Huskers on Freshman "watch" list Callin Hake, NebraskaMaggie Mendelson, Nebraska What little I've seen on Hake, she looks real promising. May be be a nice surprise this upcomming season.
-
Agree HUD. Think they will add a lot indeed. Both have had time to "see" the college game speed and toughness. Both players improved last year and make us even deeper than last year.
-
No big deal...The paint is the lane (painted lines) from the free throw line to the end line of the court, and 12' wide space (stripe to stripe)..NCAA When someone shoots a free throw, by rule, you can't be in the lane, or paint. On many courts the lane is actually painted a different color than the rest of the court itself....so it has now been generically (so to speak) called the "paint". PBA's lane has been red at times. Iowa's lane is black, etc etc etc

Probably semantics.... Maybe wasn't clear enough....Depth to me means more players (at a position) that have skills/experience, some starters, some subs. ('Depth" doesn't mean they all are all "All B1G 10" caliber. ) At 6-5 Mendelson has national and international experience, will add depth in the paint position (no matter necessarily who else plays in the post) ....and in the overall picture, she will ad depth to the squad. I've seen her play basketball.....you all well see this winter....she will help this team. More agile than 80% of 6-5 basketball players you'll see. If as you say we may be thin in the paint, wouldn't a skilled post player (and I think she's more skilled than only in the post)....add to depth at that position ? Markowski was a freshman last year and was "B1G 10 freshman of the year," and she wasn't a top 50 nationally player out of HS. Fouled a lot because of her aggressiveness, and inexperience.. I'll take that any day. As the season went on her fouling went down, as she got more experience at this level. Next season, expect her to be improved in all areas. All the other B1G coaches seemed to think in a like manner. Mendelson was top 10 nationally at volleyball...AND top 35 or so, in basketball. She is going to add depth to the inside ...so it follows she adds to the overall squad also.
-
It's way to early, but yes, Maddie may be a "player" this year, helping with the guard defensive perimeter (as well as Hake) Hake can be a three shooter looking at her HS videos. And there's some others already on the guard bench that need playing time. We'll be a bit different without Sam, but have some real talent to fill in for sure. Those 14 or so points/pg must be made up somehow or way. But even without Sam we're probably deeper this coming year. When the B1G starts with Mendelson on board we'll be even deeper, especally in the paint.

Also saw the Markowski pick in this today....Big Ten 1st team prediction ...wow ! And she's the only Sophmore (or Freshman) on the team. https://www.landgrantholyland.com/2022/10/5/23389406/ohio-state-womens-basketballs-big-ten-preseason-rankings-projections-awards

Watched the Friday night basketball scrimmage gala (mens and womens BBall) It was just a scrimmage really, but could see a few things that we'll see this fall. They all seemed glad to be back at it on the big stage. Some shots weren't dropping, but it's way early and a scrimmage anyway. We'll miss Sam. New help from Hake and Krull will help make up for Sam being gone.....but Sam's ability to get to the basket was crucial. But there was a lot of driving to the basket by everyone last night. Issie and Jaz were themselves of course. Coley, seemed a bit more focused, ready to go. Annika & Kendall too. Trinity Brady played. She looked a little rusty, but that's to be expected. It was nice to see her back. Weidner and markowski looked way more comfortable on the court. Markowski had one of her signature 3's. Both seem smoother and less "new". Hake and Krull will be nice adds at the guard position....they both remind you of Weidner somewhat. They can handle the ball well. Of course, Mendelsen can make a huge difference in the complection of the team, but that's months away. That's about it for a quick overview. You all might have something else to add. Just nice to get going again. They looked like they were having fun. As it should be.

Yep, it's way early but here is ESPN's new way to early Top 25 Guess who's in the Top 25 ? Nebraska and Creighton are in it. Huskers are 22, Creighton is 21 Iowa no, 6 https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/34086750/women-college-basketball-way-too-early-top-25-2022-23

Maggie Mendelson (Red/White Volleyball scrimage)
redsteve replied to redsteve's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
KInd a see Maaggie as a combo forward/post. She's way to mobille to sit in the lane. Unless she's way behind the basketball curve..........it's very hard to see her sitting on pines very much. But she'll miss most of the preseason more than likely. So, Coach Amy will have a real nice problem. What do you do with a 6-5 extremely athletc, No 32 in nation basketball recruit ?...That has recently played on a national women's H.S. basketball and volleyball teams...and..... just finished her first season playing on the nationally ranked NU volleyball team :) That's me smiling for Coach Amy and her problem ! -

Watched Maggie play last night vs Ohio St. Ohio St. is largely upperclassmen. NU not so much. OSU's experience showed at times. They're nationally no. 6 or 7 ..or so. But we won in 5. Maggie really is getting up to speed. Was playing great defense. Cook left her in a lot, because of her play. She's really the young pup of the team. ....a high school kid. You could tell she was overwhelmed a bit when the season started, but now...certainly not so much. She's earning her stripes quickly. .....Impressive. That's really going to help her start fast in basketball. Just hope she stays with basketball.
