So Norm, do you see any hidden gems like Thomas in state this year? I've seen a few kids getting some looks but nobody as of right now who looks to be serious targets for Nebraska or Creighton right now. Thomas and Thurmann didn't get many looks but Thomas is looking pretty solid now by all accounts. I am not super dialed in to the Nebraska prep hoops scene but I do like when local kids get a shot at Division one ball.

That's how I look at it as well. With all the new faces on the team, the softer schedule will give them a chance to build some chemistry and confidence before conference play. With an experienced team I'd hope for a few less of the lower tier teams.

Yeah, that was the one where we were winning by 1 with about 10 seconds left. Petteway inbounded the ball to IW and they hit the jumper for the win. That one hurt.

SIAP - Any rumors or talk about who the new
busticket replied to colhusker's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
And that the loss of contacts and momentum from staff turnover is going to hurt us with the class of 2016. I'm not concerned for future years so much as just that we're going to spin our wheels this year. Building on the momentum of 2015 might have been nice. We already have Proby in the fold with two spots left to fill. Between Miles, Hunter and Molinari we'll be fine filling those spots. Would have been much worse last year when we took a big class, and even then I think McVeigh was the only player where Harriman was the lead recruiter. -
Glynn Watson video - "Ya'll seen this right?"
busticket replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
His video sure makes it hard not to get at least a little excited. It's been a long time (since Sweet Jete) that we've had strong PG play. -

Well said Norm. I can't believe the hand wringing over an assistant leaving after two months. What did he do in his two months that his leaving qualifies as "devastating"? To me it's basically two months of wasted payroll but that's about it. It's hardly ideal what happened from a timing standpoint because it will be harder to get a strong candidate at this time. Not great nationally from a perception standpoint but this is just a bump in the road. -
Who are we going to target for our new assistant
busticket replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
That's pretty interesting....I must have missed that move (obviously). IIRC he graduated from Boston University so perhaps he wanted to get back to that region. I mainly remember from his early years at Loyola of Chicago (or one of those tiny Chicago schools basketball wise) that he convinced a top 150 Chicago kid to go there. That was right before Collier brought him to Lincoln. I would love to see what he could do here with the new facilities to sell. I'm guessing there is next to no chance Miles would get him to come back. I have heard zero names floated so far.....I wonder when coach is planning to start conducting interviews? -

I'm pretty sure Spinelli is still with Mark Turgeon and the Terps. I would love to have Spinelli back here but I doubt he leaves for anything but a head coaching job. The man is a recruiting machine. -
A bit of a head scratcher.....seems like we drew the short straw. I would have thought we would have been lined up with Marquette or St Johns. It is kind of exciting getting a big name draw for us. I'm not surprised their fans aren't thrilled; they have nothing to gain and we have nothing to lose. Hopefully they play like it and we come in loose and pull the shocker. Matching the two #1 seeds would have made for some real good TV ratings.

I know this is really a transfer from last year but I found it interesting (and it's a Nebraska kid). From the Summit League twitter link in the prior post, it says Jalen Bradley from Norfolk, who attended UNO, is going to Oral Roberts, also of the Summit League. I figured if Jalen couldn't crack UNO's rotation he would go to a lower tier league. Shall be interesting to see how Jalen does at ORU.

Leon looked extremely raw at Creighton. He'd probably be best served going to a mid major conference where he will have time develop. It was never said why we stopped recruiting him, but I have to assume our staff saw he was a ways off from being ready to contribute at the B1G level.

Two of the Wisconsin kids were really, really good out of high school. Dekker was a 5 star and Koenig was a 4 star. Pretty much everyone else Bo normally recruits are of the 3 star variety. Kaminsky, Hayes and Jackson fall into that group. He does a nice job of identifying the guys he wants because more often then not they seem to turn out to be pretty good ball players. You're right, though. I can't think of a guy who gets more out of his talent (according to the recruiting services) than Bo Ryan. His kids play fundamental, hard nosed basketball and it just seems like you can't rattle them. It sure was fun watching them knock off Kentucky.

You kind of missed the point. I said if he were 6'9" it would be a possibility....6'7" PF's aren't in high demand in the NBA. The NBA draft is based more on pro potential/measureables than college production. Looks at Kelly Oubre at Kansas. He's projected in the top 20 and he is incredibly raw as a player, but he is a 6'7" wing that is one year removed from high school. Terran is a 6'6" wing that scored twice as many points as Oubre but is four years out of highschool. He'll be fortunate to be drafted. I prefer to have a group of kids that will be around a few years and be a part of a well-coached, cohesive team. Similar to Wisconsin.
-
Selfishly, I'd be okay with it if Ed stayed at 6-7½". With his athleticism he could be a dominant college player at that height. If he grows to 6'9", he suddenly becomes a strong candidate to go to the NBA after a season or two. Ed has a pretty good chance to be a four year starter at Nebraska. Doug McDermott started at Creighton as a freshman because of opportunity. Ethan Wragge got hurt so they were forced to play him. Ed is coming into a similar situation where we need a guy who can come in and make an impact in the frontcourt, especially with Pitchford, Rivers, Smith and Moses leaving. Obviously McDermott and Morrow are completely different kinds of players, but the opportunity for early PT is similar. I'm pretty excited to see what Ed can do with the opportunity in front of him.
-
3 of the kids were Mac Irvin AAU players. I assume that means Chin Coleman is not being retained by Bradley.
-
I don't care if Ed's real height is 6'3" in socks....the kid effortlessly plays above the rim. He looks pretty ridiculous (in a good way) in his clips. The kid is simply an animal in the paint. I can't see how he doesn't start from day 1, or at absolute worst logs 20 minutes per game. We have nobody that has his skill set on the roster as of today.

Man, if recruiting Kevin Durant, TJ Ford and Lamarcus Aldridge isn't enough, getting to a final 4 isn't enough, and if I'm not mistaken 16 NCAA trips in 17 years isn't enough, I'd be pretty careful before taking that job. It's not like they have the history and tradition of Kentucky or Kansas. I guess everything is bigger in Texas.....

I tend to think Petteway will be much better in the "Pippen" role than "Jordan". Terran forces the issue a lot, and some of that is probably due to his limited supporting cast. If Andrew White can be our primary guy, I think Terran's turnovers problems will go down, as well as his 24' bomb attempts he like to jack up each game. Terran should get much better looks next season.
-
It looked to me like Petteway meant to push whoever was in front of him. When he saw it was a ref he immediately stopped and backed off, but the shove had already begun. The ref stared at him all the way until half court. He was very lucky not to get t'd up, but the guy cut him some slack on that one.
-
Turnovers absolutely kill us. l love Shavon but when he is a guy you frequently have bringing the ball up the court, especially against pressure, you have serious problems. Shavon is the type of player where the majority of time when he catches the ball he should immediately drive or shoot. If we had better options I'm sure Miles would be using them. This team is just not good at ball handling. Outside of recruiting to fix the problem, I'm not sure you can coach guys up that much in this regard.

Transfer Marcus Marshall (Missouri St.) -> Nevada
busticket replied to Huskerbb73's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Funny no Iowa St. I would love to have Marshall for a year; I've seen him play a few times and when he gets going he can really light it up. It's interesting that we desperately need bigs but we also need better 3 point shooting. IMO our roster will truly take shape the way Miles wants it two years from now. By then Morrow, Jacobsen and hopefully Hammond will be able to provide the needed muscle down low. We look pretty set for longer, athletic wings. I hope we can nail down a guard or two that are dead eye three point shooters. Is Glynn more of a floor general type PG or does he had good range on the 3? With Tai, Tarin and Benny on the roster it would be very nice to have a guard that can consistently make you pay from the perimeter. -
Just know that he's a power forward and not a center. He's not going to be a big man like Derrick Chandler or Aleks Maric. He's maybe a touch bigger than David Rivers, with a nonstop motor and a nose for the ball. He'll be like a Brandon Dawson if you want a good comparison. Just think he will have a little better offensive skills. I was trying to think of who Morrow reminded me off....this isn't too bad of a comparison. Ed's a guy who plays much bigger than his size. He handled himself well against a much bigger Jahlil Okafor last year, which kind of reminded me of how Byron Houston used to dominate guys much taller than him, but Byron was built like a brick s#$thouse. Obviously much different body types. It would be nice to have a true post to go with Ed at the 4. Maybe Hammond will become that guy for us but I haven't seen anything this year that tells me he has a low post game. I think we'll have a better idea of what Jacob brings to the table as his body develops in our S&C program.
-
After our rebounding differential against MSU....it's pretty obvious this kid will play A LOT next year.
-
It's getting hard not to expect big things out of Morrow as a frosh. I know it is probably not fair but he seems like the kind of inside player we haven't had in a long time. It will be fun to have a dominant player in the paint.

Tarin Smith, 18 games into freshman season
busticket replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Like many others have said, I hope Benny returns to his 6th man role and Tarin takes over the starting PG spot. I think those are the best roles for the two of them. I miss having Benny as the sparkplug off the bench.
