If that’s what you meant then you should have said just that without the disparaging remarks. -

If he doesn’t red shirt, they will break him playing against D1 posts. Not redshirting is not an option for him. -
uneblinstu's postgame chatter: Vol: 10; ed: 18 - Wisconsin
Dean Smith replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
No we didn’t shoot well but the close game was self-inflicted. Our biggest problem was shot selection. Pull ahead by 10. Jack up 4 to 5 bad shots and fall to a 3 point lead - repeat. Palmer was the best player on the floor. Unfortunately he was only Nebraska’s best player half the time and was Wisconsin’s best player the other. Going to need all of the “big three” as BTN calls them to make better decisions. Good to see Jordy have a good game. -
A theory on Jordy's development
Dean Smith replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Roy Williams: A drop step is not a post move it's a layup and everyone needs to be able to make layups. Post players need ONE move and the counter. That's all." Jordy's go to move is the jumphook to the middle. He needs to learn a double drop when that move ist taken away and he's good. Catch the ball, Drop step either way if available, if not go to your go to move, if they take that away use the counter, if that's not there kick it out and repost. There should be no "thinking" in that process. Just train the muscle memory and then go through the progression everytime you catch the ball. -

2018 C Brady Heiman - LOI -> South Dakota
Dean Smith replied to Navin R. Johnson's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Rich was a true 5 and was at least 4 inches taller than Brady. Rich liked to get the ball with his back to the basket and I feel Brady is more comfortable facing. I think they will be greatly different players in college. Rich spent some time in the NBA so we can seriously hope our commit turns out to be in the same neighborhood. -

He's going to be a 4 and mobility is one of his big strengths. I haven't seen enough to make judgements on his lateral quickness but that is something that can be developed. He took a couple of threes during the tournament and actually made one but it's not something I would call a strength right now. The key to his success at Nebraska will be his work ethic. He has some obvious weaknesses right now but if he is willing to put in the work starting with his diet, SAQ, strength training, and skill development he can be somebody that gives us meaningful minutes in his career. That is the definition of a project. If he is willing to admit his deficiencies and bust his butt he can make himself a player. But he will have to be willing to outwork most D-1 players who are ahead of him at this point. He is a Nebraska kid so he's worth the shot. He has committed to the program so I'll be rooting for him. -

I saw that the York Holiday tournament was going to be streamed online so I watched him play the two games in the tournament. They lost to York and then beat a very bad Elkhorn team. He biggest strength seems to be he is tall and and can make layups. Moves relatively well and has come a long way in just catching the ball from his Sophomore year when he just couldn't. He can dribble a bit but I wouldn't go as far as to say he is "skilled." Has a decent midrange jumper but is slow to get it off. That is not an issue in Class B but will be when he plays guys as tall as him. He doesn't seem to have any go to post move. I don't know what kind of weight program they have there and I know some people just have a hard time gaining weight, but he is very weak. Emphasis on the very. His shot was affected on multiple occasions by players 7 or 8 inches shorter simply by muscling him up. It made a lot of his shots come up short. York has some thick athletes from their state football team and he struggled when he got the ball in the post. He was much more effective with offensive rebounds and running the floor. Made some bad decisions and seemed to get frustrated by getting muscled up. He really forced some shots off the dribble (the guy on Striv said it was the most shots he had taken in game this year) but he was forced away from the basket due to lack of strength and all of those shots came up short. It seemed to me that he was too demonstrative when calls went against him and whined a lot during the York game. Not so much against Elkhorn but they did what they wanted that night. I thought his biggest strength was he had good timing on blocking shots, granted from players up to a foot shorter than him. In Class B he can be dominate. As much as he struggled against York he had a ton of blocks because they kept coming at him and he scored in the 20's. He rebounds well because he is mobile and goes and gets the ball. He needs to redshirt. Not doing it can't be an option for him. He is the definition of project. If he gets twice as strong as he is now (maybe more), gains 40 pounds or so and learns a post move he might be OK. He might get a couple of blocks but I would assume post players for UNK, Wayne State and even York College would eat him up at this time. -
uneblinstu's postgame chatter: Vol: 10; ed: 15 - Stetson
Dean Smith replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
No. Tanner worked hard and had a good game but I don’t think it’s fair to him to have too high of expectations. He is who he is and should be appreciated for what he is. He quite possibly wouldn’t be the best post player on the team if he played for Stetson. When he got minutes in our games against power 5 schools he wasn’t able to finish at all and was not able to guard anyone. The Stetson post shot over him consistently. If nothing else, Duby is a real force defensively at the rim. -
Great for Tanner and if they are being genuine in that video, that's a bunch of guys that care about each other.

I've even seen Belichick with his hood up on the sidelines.
-
I'm pretty sure Coach Mac has no problem with a player having his hood up in warmups. Huge Bob Knight fan when it comes to his concepts but he nor anyone else could be successful today with his methods. I've been involved with some very successful basketball coaches. I would way more successful than you regardless of who you are because they were the most successful in Nebraska history. They taught fundamentals, had very disciplined teams and could give a rat's ass about who's warmup hood was up.
-
I didn't say anything about undisciplined basketball. I'm saying you can't control everything down to whether they want to wear the hood that is on the team provided warmup or not. Pretty much every team that is signed with Adidas has warm ups with hoods. They are certainly not mutually exclusive. If you think wearing a hood is undisciplined then there's not much more room for our discussion. You don't have to march around like little soldiers to have a disciplined basketball team. When players did things that were out of control they came and took a seat on the bench. Things do change and if you don't you get left behind. I think Bobby Knight was a basketball genius but you can't stay employed being Bobby Knight anymore and you certainly can't sign the type of players we need to be successful with his attitude and actions. And if it was Evan Taylor that that's exactly the kind of disciplined, team first players we need. He has no problem doing the dirty work. If discipline was all you needed to be successful than West Point and the Naval Academy would be playing for the final every year. North Carolina is disciplined or the will face the wrath of Roy but he is a good enough coach that has done his work in practice that he has enough trust in his players to allow them some individual creativity that makes the game fun to watch.

You don't have to be stubborn to do something people on a message board think is unpopular. He knows the kids and how the deal with things mentally and emotionally. Roby is obviously the better player at his point but he had some real foul trouble again last night.

They started him and feed him on the left block to start the game - travel.

If you want to play D-1 basketball you have to be able to make a layup. Or at least you should have to.

Pre-Annual Cupcake Loss Check-In
Dean Smith replied to HuskerFever's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I don't even see it as losing the tip at this point. It's more like we are deferring until the second half. -
Which is why I would have him on the right block but lets get him to go through a post progression so he can get the ball deeper. He can start the drop step middle to his strong hand and if they take that away (which is the scouting report right now), double drop back to the baseline. I think he could make hay with that move right now.
