Indiana Game Thread: The Two Minute Drill
bball23 replied to cipsucks's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
You notice anytime NU has made a "semi run" the refs will call a ticky tack foul on NU? Frustrating to watch this. -
I watched a good portion of the video too....I will say this. It looked like Tai could have done anything he wanted, at anytime and honestly it never looked like he was going hard at all. He missed a lot of those shots, but that doesn't bother me as guys are going to miss shots. The competition obviously isn't great in that video, but I'm guessing if Tai went "all out" he would drop 40 if he wanted too. I remember his dad having a quote that he needs to be "challenged" because he wasn't where he was at. We have to hope with some good coaching, and good push from teammates that his skills fully come out. I gotta trust Miles on this and I know Fran Fraschilla is very high on him. Remember, in the Olympic qualifying games he averages I want to say 16-18 points a game vs grown men.
-
Miles is trying to change the culture at Nebraska. That also means us. dimes...exactly right. I think some of the jabs are even meant for the fans. So many fans have been "happy to be close" and I bet that even rubs Miles the wrong way. Even if deep down he knows that his team doesn't have the horses yet, he doesn't want the players or fans to get in that "well, we played hard" mentality. He wants all of us to believe in winning. I for one love the man so far.

uneblinstu's post game chatter: vol 5, ed 20 - Northwestern

I said before the game that Almeida wouldn't see the court. NW runs their big man at the elbow almost all game and sets a TON of screens. No way Almeida can do the job of hedging the way that Ubel can. Almeida would have been eaten alive with all the high ball screens their big guys set all night. So I had no problem with him not playing today and in fact, said he wouldn't. As for Benny...I also thought Benny was great especially on defense. He took #3 out of his game in that 2nd half and was awesome IMO in doing so. -
I actually enjoy the Sharpe and Benning show in the morning. I refuse to listen to USC anymore. Bishop is just too much, and you would think Creighton is the greateast team in America in his opinion. Mike'l at any chance will change any basketball talk or any sport for that matter into football talk as that is all he knows.

I am a little concerned about all the Shields love.
bball23 replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Here is why I'm fairly high on Shields....first, he has a way of being around the ball. Second, he has a VERY high basketball IQ, and thirdly, the guy missed what, 7 games already so is "behind" and yet playing well. -
I still think Parker has minutes on this team in the future....look, the guy was thrown into the wolves with VERY little supporting cast. If you put some decent shooters around him to open up the floor a bit I think that will help him tremendously get into the lane and dish to shooter or get to the rim. The guys a FRESHMAN people and was asked to start on a very below average team. I for one think he will only get better and hope he knows this. He could be a great spark/change of pace for us next year and in the future IMO.
-
I'm cautiously optimistic. I think we can definitely beat Purdue if we play well, but on any given night we can also probably be blown out of the gym. If our guys continue to limit the turnovers, make teams work on defense, play good defense then we have a chance. The key is going to be for us to make the open shots we get. When we shoot even decent, we look like a decent team. Thats been the problem all year though. I really hope we get this win, get some momentum going into the weekend. I'm not one that likes to look ahead, but our next 4 games are lets say "more winnable" than the previous 4. I hope we get a great crowd tonight and Husker Nation comes out in full force.

Attewe and Pitchford were tweeting back and fourth...Attewe then said "How's Nebraska" to which he said "Check your inbox" Hopefully he says good things and is enjoying himself at NU. -
Out at USC....I know this is an NU board, but since we played them...
-
atskoc....I completely agree. Twice late in the game we had numbers on the fast break and they settled for 15 foot jumpers. I thought had we attacked the hoop we get a much better opportunity to either A) get fouled or make the layup. Besides that, I was pretty happy with the game, officiating, but bummed about the outcome. Guys played tough and had a shot to win at the end. I gotta believe some wins are in the near future if they keep playing like this. Hopefully it starts Wednesday.

Reggie Rankin tweeted this morning that UCONN got a commit from another big. I wonder if that will help at all. I know Attewe has mentioned he would like playing time right away. So with them signing another big, maybe that helps us with Attewe if UCONN was really pursuing him. -

Sadly, GATA is dead on with this. Kids eat this stuff up! Norm, I also understand your point as well. We don't want a shoe company being the reason for success, but sometimes things like this do help lure kids in. Sadly I know. As a person that is around kids a lot and that is around high school athletes a lot, I know they love this stuff and DO talk about what schools have what shoes, contracts, etc.....Its just the way it is. Kids want the "coolest" "newest" things and they want them right away. If getting Nike on board attracts a few kids.....well, we don't really want to miss out do we?
-
From the very first time I saw this kids video I really liked him. What was so fascinating to me was how well he was able to use both hands around the rim, dribble for his size, court vision and shooting. I wouldn't call him "explosive" but he looks like he has an extremely high basketball IQ and can stroke it from the outside. I think we got a good one in Fuller.

I agree AA needs to play a bit more, but if you noticed when we were on defense they were doing a ton of high pick and rolls and Almeida simply can't hedge well enough and recover to his man the way Ubel and Shields can. He was simply staying below his guy leaving guys pretty wide open to either shoot, or drive the lane. I think that had a little to do with it. I really wish AA were able to play the Wisconsin game. That game was more paced for him and we could have used his interior defense (especially late in the game) as well as rebounding. Guys simply don't move AA, but late in that Wisky game, Bergerrer (spelling) was getting his way vs a smaller Shields. He doesn't do that vs AA. Man I wish we could have won that game and be sitting 1-2 right now. We let that one slip away. -
Miles had said on numerous occasions that he likes that 4 guard look with most guys being able to shoot the ball. Much easier to get spacing on the floor to open up the drive and kick scenario. So I would be surprised to see lineups of Webster, Fuller, Gallegos and either (Parker or Biggs) with Pitchford/Rivers/Petteway being the "bigger" guy on the floor. If all indications are true, Pitchford can also step out and shoot the 3 ball which gives you yet another option on a shooter.
-
One of the big things IMO that will get Benny Parker minutes is how good of an on-ball defender he is. If you watch him in games, he is under his man so well and very seldomly loses him. VERY good on ball defender which can really dictate things for our defense. If he does happen to get beat, we will hopefully have more shot blocking ability next season with Pitchford (and hopefully Attewe). Its exciting seeing guys (on paper at least) that look to be much more athletic but also some SHOOTERS which NU has lacked in so, so long. If Hawkins, Fuller and Webster can continue to shoot good percentages that is only going to open things up that much more for Gallegos and others. And if Biggs is as good at getting to the hoop as some have said, teams will either have to help on him (at which he can kick to a shooter) or stay on there man and Biggs can get to the rim. I like what we have coming in next year and am very excited about the future of our team. Like everybody else, would still love to see one more big come to NU (hopefully Attewe).

Husker Illustarted has an article on the Attewe visit. I'm not a member so can't read it. Maybe somebody that is can at least give us a brief summary? Rosenthal tweeted that Attewe said NU at the top of his list. The other good news is that KSU got a verbal commit from another big so Attewe may be leaning more towards us now. Would like to land this guy. -
I like that Fuller is coming today vs his hometown school Wisconsin. I also like it that he is here while Attewe is. I would really like NU to get Attewe. We need a good athletic big that looks to only be getting better. They said at first he only had like 8 offers and is now up around 30. People clearly see some potential for this young man that has only been playing ball for like 4-5 years they said. This could be that type of "diamond in the rough" type kid you find that is only going to get better.
