uneblinstu’s postgame chatter: vol 12; ed 4 - vs. Southern

Cam being over the top when things are going well isn't a problem...it's when he's over the top when things aren't going well that's an issue for this team with adversity problems. It's like hey man, no shit you just had a bad play and now you're acting like you were caught murdering a puppy...how many more bad plays in a row would you like that to lead to? I made this tweet that I don't consider an anti-Cam tweet at all. Someone made an obvious Cam Mack "stan" account to sort of chew me out and 3 other people at like 6 am Saturday morning before deleting the tweets. Our point guard seems to be a dramatic person surrounded by people that feed that. This isn't necessarily a good nor bad thing. I appreciate the passion, i do. Will he be able to channel it to make this team better when things are tough? -
Was it for a groupon to attend some of their pay games?

In reference to what Hoiberg said up there, I specifically remember Cheatham not closing out on Bradford after he already had 20+ points and Bradford buried another 3. Disappointing lack of awareness from the senior. -

Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg On pushing through to the end of the game “We responded so much better this time around [to adversity]. Last time, I think we got down 4-6 (points) and then it got to 15 or 18 right away when they caught fire. Those guys were hitting shots all over the place on us, but we found a way. We tried to throw a little zone on them but it didn’t work. Jervay [Green] was the one who said ‘stick with them, don’t help. Don’t switch.’ He did a really good job contesting (on Micah Bradford). Not very often you give up 25 offensive rebounds and miss 18 free throws and win a game, but give our guys credit for finding a way. It’s certainly better to win, and learn from a win, then a loss. On their rebounding “I thought they were more physical than us, especially in the first half. They were getting all the loose balls and we tracked the 50-50 balls, they were the first to the floor on a lot of those. You have to go out there and establish that early. That just breeds confidence. Then we got up by 11 and it was great to see the ball go in the basket for Matej [Kavas] tonight, but they got right back in. A lot of it had to do with loose balls and rebounds. 25 [offensive rebounds] is just way too many. You are not going to win too many games when that happens. You have to find a way to do it with 5 guys. We talked about it from the first day we met, that rebounding was going to be an issue for our group, but we have to find a way to compete better than we did tonight on the glass.” On junior guard Jervay Green “Jervay is a guy that can play all day. I would like that. Jervay is just a guy that can go out there and compete at a high level. Whether he’s making shots or not, he’s always going to impact the game because of his defense and defensive intensity. Haanif [Cheatham] did a great job last game against Douglas Wilson with South Dakota State. I know he had a big game last night against Arizona. The best match-up for us tonight was Jervay on [Micah] Bradford. We can learn with this group, but we closed out with our hands down to a kid that had 27 points (at the time) a couple times. It’s inexcusable. You can’t do that. Again, I give our guys credit for finding a way to win a hard-fought game.” On the personality of the team “I can see it in the huddle that they’re engaged. In the game a couple weeks ago I could see heads down, not pouting, but hunched over shoulders. Tonight, those guys were engaged, and they kept going and kept fighting and kept battling. That’s growth. That’s growth for a group. If we can continue to do that and again, find a way to battle on the boards, and make a free throw here and there, we’re going to have a chance. We scored 93 points and missed 18 free throws. We did a lot of good things tonight, but rebounding is a huge concern and a huge area that we need to get better on." -

In all truthfulness I hope we are capable of playing to the level of our opponents because they are about to be higher level -

I thought Sean Woods on the other side was a pretty good coach. They were draining shot clock in the 2nd half to keep us from going on runs and possibly to keep possessions down so his key guys wouldn't foul out. They had a good game plan to beat us. -

Didn't know if I'd be able to fill in the "celebrates for 5 seconds during a possession" on my Cam Mack Bingo card. -

Allen has D-1 experience and while his 3pt shooting at WV was bad, his FT shooting was good and it's probable he's at least serviceable from long range We probably need to add another post player which would fill us up. Thus we would likely need to lose someone else either currently on the team or committed to the team. Who on the team do we want to lose for a SF with two years left and a checkered past?

It's Dr. Coach Grant Gibbs now

Game Day Essentials: Game #4 vs Southern

It is. So if you can't make it and you're going to buy this anyway, you should buy it for this game as well. -
Southern Head Coach: Eric Henderson Location: Baton Rouge, LA Conference: SWAC Nickname: Jaguars Shirt not to wear: Yellow, blue Defensive Style: Generate steals Offensive Style: Points off turnovers Previous history: Nebraska 2-0 vs the Jags with both games coming during the Miles era. 2016 was the 'Jeriah Horne game' which possibly saved Miles from being fired that year. Line: Nebraska by 18.5 Players to watch: Jayden Saddler The 6'0" sophomore PG is the only key returning player from last year and the offense should run through him though he's seen limited time on the court this season due to foul trouble. Most of Saddler's shots come inside the arc and he will definitely take mid-range shots if you let him. Last year he was turnover prone so Nebraska should be able to generate points off his miscues. Hoiberg Presser Green Presser Pretty informative from Green. Didn't really lift weights at Juco and after getting pushed around in the first game is taking the weight room more serious. (There is the D-1 adjustment for you.) Also notes that they reviewed game film about their pace and they're not yet where they need to be. Hoiberg talks about the guys hitting their shots in practice, noting that Kavas has hit well. He expects it to happen soon in a game. When asked about analytics he brought up shot charts for both his offense and defense. Hoiberg values shot selection as much as anything in basketball. The Skinny: Former Kentucky Wildcats standout Sean Woods was a coach on the rise after building up Miss Valley St in the SWAC and Morehead St into winners until he was basically forced to resign due to allegations of assaulting two of his players. Woods was an assistant in 2017 for Stenson before being hired back into the SWAC by Southern. The roster has undergone a complete transformation as the Jaguars rank 343rd in KenPom minutes continuity. (The Huskers clock in at #352). Much like Nebraska, it's doubtful the Jags have figured things out just yet. Southern has a couple of guys over 6'9" but realistically it's a shorter team and Nebraska shouldn't be plagued by rebounding issues. The thing this Jaguar team will do is try and pressure the ball for steals to feed their anemic offense. The Huskers have protected the ball well the first 3 games though we'll see what happens in what should be their first game against a non-passive defense. Nebraska would need to lay an UC Riverside-esque turd to lose this game and frankly this team doesn't seem to possess the type of traits I think will give this Nebraksa team trouble (size, experience, slow pace). I think that Southern wants to play fast so expect another high scoring game. Is this the one where the Huskers finally start hitting 3s? Prediction: Nebraska 94 - Southern 75 with a 99 % chance of Runzas
