Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-8) at #3 Purdue Boilermakers (15-1) Date: Friday Jan 13th, 2023 Time: 6:00 pm Arena: Mackey Arena Broadcast: BTN Purdue Info Head Coach: Matt Painter Location: West Lafayette, IN Conference: B1G Nickname: Boilermakers Mascot: Boilermaker Special, Purdue Pete Rotation Depth: 9 Last Game: Beat Penn State KenPom: 6 Line: Purdue by 14.5 A couple of Famous Alumni: Glenn Robinson, Robbie Hummel Other: In their first matchup, Nebraska took Purdue to the brink before ultimately falling in OT 65-62 Juwan Gary is out for this game; Look for Wilhelm Breidenbach or Denim Dawson to start Mason Gillis didn't play in the first matchup. The 6'6" 230# forward is an elite rebounder who while capable of shooting well from outside has struggled this season. KenPom Analysis: Purdue is a methodical offensive team which means that Nebraska can hunt for offensive rebounds without as much fear of being hurt in transition. Purdue isn't a team likely to exploit Nebraska's turnover issues. Player to watch: Fletcher Loyer Foster Loyer's little brother has been a day 1 starter for the Boilermakers and is leading the team in 3pt attempts while hitting 37% of them. Player to watch: F Caleb Furst Typically Painter has two giant posts who split time. This season he has a guy like 6'10" Furst who can play alongside Edey at the 4 or operating as a center given his ability to shoot from outside. Player to watch: C Zach Edey Edey is in the running for national player of the year as he has been racking up double-doubles in the first halves of games. He's also constantly a threat to foul out your starting and backup centers. KenPom most used lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 3 Braden Smith 6-0 180 Fr 2 Fletcher Loyer 6-4 185 Fr 25 Ethan Morton 6-7 215 Jr 1 Caleb Furst 6-10 230 So 15 Zach Edey 7-4 290 Jr 26.9 Others to watch This is your standard Matt Painter team: It's 4 guys who can shoot 3s that work around a giant post player. UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 5 Sam Griesel G 6-7 25 Emmanuel Bandoumel G 6-4 0 C.J. Wilcher G 6-5 32 Wilhelm Breidenbach F 6-10 13 Derrick Walker F 6-9 Bench 15 Blaise Keita C 6-11 30 Keisei Tominaga G 6-2 10 Jamarques Lawrence - G 6-3 12 Denim Dawson - F 6-6 33 Oleg Kojenets F 7-0 12 Sam Hoiberg G 6-0 31 Cale Jacobsen G 6-4 35 Henry Burt F 6-6 24 Jeffrey Grace III G 6-3 Injured 3 Quaran McPherson G 6-3 - Out for the Year 4 Juwan Gary F 6-6 Hoiberg Preser The Skinny: Expect Nebraska to try more of the same on defense, swarming Eddy and then chasing 3pt shooters. It's likely that Purdue hits more 3s at home than they did in Lincoln. Offensively, Nebraska desperately needs some outside shooting and generally speaking you can get 3pt looks against the Boilermakers. Simply try and feed whomever starts to get hot to supplement Derrick and Sam. I think the Huskers will score some points tonight as either they'll finally make some shots or else Purdue will get up enough that their defensive intensity wanes. Nebraska likely bounces back from their home whooping vs Illinois but that still doesn't mean they keep this game within 10 points. Prediction: Purdue 75 - Nebraska 60 View full article

To wit, why are you bringing up a guy who hasn't even been to court yet?
-
This is sort of the point. Rick is a HOF basketball coach who had to spend 3 years in Greece and now coaches at IONA. Yeah he's coaching again but he isn't *back* and might never be. Assuming he doesn't end up a convicted felon, Beard is going to not coach anywhere for a few years before some low end D-1 or lower school pulls the trigger. The thing that both coaches have in common is that they sure as shit won't be coaching here.

Briedenbach or Dawson expected to get the start. They combined for 5 minutes in an OT game last time vs Purdue. -

There seems to be some misconception here that Hoiberg is going to pull Lloyd's redshirt. If RL is going to play, it's because he decides to. Looks like just some run of the mill 'i'm out there working' tweet

Only 1 more day until we find out if we're back to going to the tourney or we're having a roll call on the Tim Miles era. -
What I'm saying is that you are comparing Beard, a man arrested for something in his personal life, to coaches that got in trouble with the NCAA and that they are two very different things. You don't seem to understand that Beard is in the Dave Bliss zone. At some point Beard will get a second chance because he's very good at winning basketball games but try 5+ years at a tiny Texas school, not here.

If you're going to make this type of argument, please list other coaches that have allegedly committed domestic assault, not guys who sent too many texts before that was legal or allegedly paid for players before that was legal.

Any updates on Juwan Gary's status for Friday?
hhcmatt replied to jimmykc's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Gary's shoulder is an ongoing issue. He originally injured it his freshman year at Alabama and he jammed it vs Omaha. His sophomore season he missed 2 games with a leg injury and 2 games because of a 'facial contusion' -

Most teams go by tickets sold. During the Lee B. era when the Devaney was a ghost town he beat up the athletic department so much that they would post actual attendance in the box score alongside paid. Believe they reset to just paid during the covid year -

You might have blinked when Breidenbach picked up his 3rd foul in the first half. Hoiberg during his career has been about middle of the road between coaches who play guys a lot of minutes with 2 fouls and those who never play them. The game itself was a disjointed mess in general with 24 fouls being called in the first half and 14 in the second half. Real hard to figure out a rotation when what constitute a foul fluctuates like it did last night. -

Postgame presser Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg Opening statement and update on Juwan Gary’s shoulder “With Juwan (Gary), we don’t know a lot right now. We will get a scan in the morning and do some more testing on him. Obviously, he was in a lot of pain and after being evaluated by the doctors, and we thought the right move was to keep him out for the rest of the game. We will have an update on Juwan hopefully in the next 24 hours.” On the most disappointing part of the game and the game overall “They are so fast and athletic when they turn you over. That was a big difference in the game and also with second-chance points. They had their way with that as well. We just have to have more focus on the basic part of our plan and go out and execute those things to give ourselves a chance. We had probably our best offensive game against Minnesota, but we didn’t carry that over. We had stretches in the second half. Listen, when Derrick (Walker) goes out, he’s a big part of our system and playmaker. Getting those two fouls and not ever getting into a rhythm tonight, that hurt us on that end. Give them credit. They took us out of it. They took our shooters away and played Derrick. We just couldn’t get anything going. He had a career game the other day in Minnesota. Second half, we had stretches that I thought we cut very well to get it going. We talked in the locker room. We couldn’t have played much worse and had guys out of the lineup with fouls, but we were still in striking distance. We came out of the gate and made a run and cut it to five, but then they pushed it right back up. Wilhelm (Breidenbach) was a bright spot. It was good to see him get it going offensively. We just have to hopefully keep him in the game better in the first half with eliminating some of the fouls that are costing him. I think it was 10 with six and a half left, and then they went on a monumental run to finish it. We just have to stick together. For whatever reason, after losses we are bouncing back, but after wins we are just not handling it the right way. We have to find a way to bounce back whether it’s a win or loss and prepare. I thought our preparation was actually pretty good the last few days, but we certainly didn’t carry that over into the game.” On fouls making an impact on the game “It does but it shouldn’t be that big of a factor. We certainly practice with all our guys, and they all need to be ready to step in there and make an impact. We missed a lot of layups, I thought, and we aren’t converting on our free throws. We did the other day, we didn’t tonight. When you give up those types of opportunity, you just don’t get those back. We’ll learn from it, and hopefully we’ll grow from it and get better from it, but we’re going into the best team in the league’s gym which is the hardest place to play in our league. Hopefully, we respond well.” On not being able to string wins together “It’s frustrating. Again, if we want to have a chance to play in the postseason, you have to string them together and you have to start with that. We’ve had a brutal schedule. It’s been hard. There’s no doubt about that. But, you go on the road, you get a big win to pull even, as far as wins and losses on the road and at home, and then you come and drop one. We have to find a way to steal at least one more on the road, hopefully a couple of them, and start stringing good efforts together for the remaining 14 left.” Forward Willhelm Breidenbach On the struggles throughout the game “I think it just takes us too long to get going. Just not being able to jump on it from the start I think really hurts us and then obviously me coming in and picking up dumb fouls kind of gives the other team momentum. Just have to play smarter I think and play more poised and follow the game plan.” On fouls called during the first half “We have a pretty next-man-up mentality. I mean Jamarques (Lawrence) came in. Denim (Dawson) came in and gave us really good minutes, so I think it is just kind of everybody is prepared. Obviously it sucks when there is that many whistles. Like I said when I am picking up dumb fouls that definitely hurts the team.” On getting in a rhythm while fouls are being called “It is hard but a lot of them are avoidable, box-outs, moving screens, things like that so we just have to play smarter.” On Breidenbach’s scoring run “Just take what the defense gives me. Whatever I can do to help the team and give the team a better chance at winning is what I will do. It does not necessarily have to be scoring but if I am scoring then that is fine. If it is rebounding or anything in between then that is what I will do.” -

Postgame notes Sam Griesel’s 12 points tonight marked his fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures and his ninth time in double figures this season. Wilhelm Breidenbach scored all of his 11 points in the second half, including eight straight at one point. It was his third game in double figures this season. Breidenbach tied his career high with two 3-pointers. Behind Breidenbach’s 11 points, Nebraska’s bench scored 20 points, its highest output in five games. Before being injured late in the first half, Juwan Gary tied his season-high with two blocks (also at Michigan State on Jan 3). Jamarques Lawrence knocked down a 3-pointer in the first half. It marked his fourth 3-pointer of the season but his first made three at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Derrick Walker was held to just five points – all in the second half – as he was held to single digits for just the second time this season. Walker did lead Nebraska with three assists, the third straight game he has led the Huskers in assists. Nebraska outscored Illinois 32-30 in the paint, marking the Huskers’ third straight game with more than 30 points in the paint. Nebraska fell to 6-2 at home with tonight’s loss.
