Nebraska Cornhuskers (8-7) vs Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-7) Date: January 7th, 2023 Time: 11:00 am Arena: Williams Arena Broadcast: BTN Minnesota Info Head Coach: Ben Johnson Location: Minneapolis, MN Conference: B1G Nickname: Golden Gophers Mascot: Goldie the Gopher Line: Nebraska by 3.5 Typical Rotation Depth: 8+ KenPom rank: 191 A couple of Famous Alumni: Kevin McHale, Bobby Jackson Other: Blaise Keita is a game time decision Ben Johnson spent one year as an assistant coach at Nebraska under Tim Miles KenPom Analysis: Like Nebraska, Minnesota defends without fouling. Gophers are sloppy with ball and a team Nebraska should out rebound. Player to watch: C Dawson Garcia Ben Johnson got Minnesota native Garcia back in state after stops at Marquette and North Carolina. The big center is a 3 level scorer but has struggled from outside this season. Player to watch: F Jasmison Battle Minnesota's leading returning scorer is a threat from both levels; turnover prone KenPom most used lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 55 Ta'Lon Cooper 6-4 195 Jr 0 Taurus Samuels 6-1 195 Sr 10 Jamison Battle 6-7 220 Jr 1 Joshua Ola-Joseph 6-7 215 Fr 3 Dawson Garcia 6-11 230 So 15.4 2 55 Ta'Lon Cooper 6-4 195 Jr 4 Braeden Carrington 6-4 195 Fr 10 Jamison Battle 6-7 220 Jr 42 Treyton Thompson 7-0 210 So 3 Dawson Garcia 6-11 230 So 10.7 Others to watch PG Ta'Lon Cooper has been an efficient scorer, will likely draw Emanuel Bandoumel Joshua Ola-Joseph is an undersized, high-energy 4 man Dartmouth transfer guard Tarus Samuels hasn't translated well to the B1G Freshman shooter Braeden Carrington has struggled against high level opponents 6'9" 255# Pharrel Payne is a rim protector, can pass, and is an inside bucket; also foul and turnover prone Raw F Treyton Thompson is matchup dependent UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 5 Sam Griesel G 6-7 25 Emmanuel Bandoumel G 6-4 0 C.J. Though lack of ball movement was the problem behind the lack of offense in the first half The Skinny: Ben Johnson wasn't exactly a popular choice with Minnesota fans and this season looks to be another losing one while watching former coach Rick Pitino start out 14-1. Johnson has a young squad and next season, year 3, is probably his make or break year. This Minnesota team turns the ball over which coupled with their lackluster shooting has them struggling to score. If Nebraska brings its normal defensive intensity, it should be a long day for the Gopher offense. Minnesota has been stout with their interior defense but Nebraska between Walker, Griesel, and company should be able to figure out how to generate good looks. Neither team likely shoots many FTs which is great for everyone as they're two of the worst FT shooting teams in D-1 at the moment. Nebraska should be able to win as long as Minnesota doesn't get hot from outside. Expect this to be a low scoring slog. Prediction: Nebraska 67 - Minnesota 62 View full article

Most of Minnesota's roster will come back next season and it's a decent number of freshmen. Pretty likely he has a year 3.
-
If Bill Moos was an AD somewhere in 2025 he would hire Beard.

Is that a problem now? This entire conversation is about changing the covid extra year to a permanent deal.

Nebraska (8-6) vs. Michigan St. (9-4) Game Thread
hhcmatt replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yes I understand that most everyone is poor at shooting 3pt shots. I'm not saying that he should stop shooting them as 2-3 aren't going to kill us. What I am saying is that he's poor enough at 3pt shooting that he should no longer be allowed to compete in a meaningless exhibition of skill. -

I'd say that Breidenbach isn't allowed to compete in any more pre-season 3pt shooting contests until he gets his career average above the Mendoza line -

blowouts are the things that lead to moments like Oleg scoring with under a minute to go and Fred swearing under his breath after Sam goes 1-2 from the FT line. -

Notes from UNL *-Nebraska falls to 8-7 (1-3 Big Ten) on the season with tonight’s loss*-Michigan State is the first Husker opponent in the last five games to shoot better than 40 percent from the field, as MSU shot 48.4 percent from the field.*-Derrick Walker finished in double figures for the ninth time this season and the 11th time in the last 12 games dating back to last season.*-Derrick Walker finished with a team-high 15 points along with nine rebounds and three assists, pacing NU in all three categories.*-Wilhelm Breidenbach reached double figures for the third time this season with 10 points off the bench. He has reached double figures in each of NU’s last two road games.*-Nebraska shot 57.7 percent in the second half after shooting 27.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes*-The Huskers have lost 10 straight to Michigan State dating back to Nebraska’s win in East Lansing in 2016 -

Nebraska Cornhuskers (8-6) vs Michigan St (9-4) Date: January 3rd, 2023 Time: 6:00 pm Arena: Breslin Center Broadcast: BTN Michigan St Spartans Head Coach: Tom Izzo Location: East Lansing, MI Conference: B1G Nickname: Spartans Mascot: Sparty Line: Michigan St by 6.5 Typical Rotation Depth: 9+ KenPom rank: 46 A couple of Famous Alumni: Magic Johnson, Draymond Green Other: Blaise Keita is out Game #15 for Nebraska was also last year at Michigan St. Nebraska dropped that game 67-79. KenPom Analysis: Michigan St. slower this season. Their gameplan is typical for an Izzo team where they pass the ball well on offense and they're all about sitting back on defense to try and force poor shots Player to watch: Joey Hauser Hauser leads the Spartan in scoring and rebounding and all four of MSU's losses line up with Hauser's worst 4 box scores of the year. The big stretch 4 is shooting 44.8% from 3. With Malik Hall back from injury Hauser will likely spend time playing the 5. Player to watch: G Tyson Walker I think that Bando spends more time on AJ Hoggard so look for the undersized Walker to try and get it going today. The combo guard can get hot from the outside and alternates with Hoggard as the PG. KenPom most used lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 11 AJ Hoggard 6-4 210 Jr 2 Tyson Walker 6-1 180 Sr 3 Jaden Akins 6-4 190 So 10 Joey Hauser 6-9 220 Sr 22 Mady Sissoko 6-9 240 Jr 23.2 Others to watch Jaden Akins is another guard in addition to Walker, Hauser, and Brooks who can knock down 3s. 6'6" Pierre Brooks is a 3pt shooting forward at the 3 Mady Sissoko is there for defense and garbage points. If he can't stay with Derrick Walker he won't play much. 6'8" F Malik Hall is working his way back into shape from a foot injury that kept him out of 8 games. 3 level scorer. 6'9" Jaxon Kohler and 6'11" Carson Cooper are freshman post depth 6'2" Tre Holloman is freshman PG depth UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 5 Sam Griesel G 6-7 25 Emmanuel Bandoumel G 6-4 0 C.J. Wilcher G 6-5 4 Juwan Gary F 6-6 13 Derrick Walker F 6-9 Bench 15 Blaise Keita C 6-11 30 Keisei Tominaga G 6-2 32 Wilhelm Breidenbach F 6-10 10 Jamarques Lawrence - G 6-3 12 Denim Dawson - F 6-6 33 Oleg Kojenets F 7-0 12 Sam Hoiberg G 6-0 31 Cale Jacobsen G 6-4 35 Henry Burt F 6-6 24 Jeffrey Grace III G 6-3 Injured 3 Quaran McPherson G 6-3 - Out for the Year The Skinny: Michigan St comes into this game surviving one of the toughest schedules in D-1 plus a couple of key injuries with a respectable 9-4 record. Currently they project as a bubble team and how this roster gels down the stretch will determine whether or not Sparty makes the dance as there isn't a NBA prospect on their roster that will simply carry the team. Michigan St defensively is built to guard the rim so expect Nebraska to test from the outside and look for this to be a Tominaga night. Keisei tends to fair well against shorter opponents and MSU trots out at least 1 small guard. Defensively, Nebraska will be tested tonight against a Michigan St team that will pass the ball and can hit from outside. At some point a team has to get hot against the Cornhuskers and how will the defense respond? Look for a couple of offenses to patiently hunt for shots and perhaps for Michigan State to be looking ahead to Saturday's matchup with Michigan. Who might pull out a close one at the end? We have 12,000 tickets sold each game and then 6000 show up. This time people showed up. They probably had a hunch but it's even tougher to ramp up between Christmas and New Years when people have holiday plans. Otherwise as an experienced attendee, I got Jimmy Johns before the game because I knew getting anything would be a hassle. -

Not having enough concessions or programs or whatever was exacerbated by this easily being the largest crowd of the year. -

That was an era full of guys hucking it up. Paul Silas AVERAGED over 20 rebounds a game during his career at Creighton in '62-'64. -

Yeah, not many Iowa fans. It was a bunch of Nebraska people who decided that they wanted to see a basketball game at 6pm during the holidays. Had a group of Iowa fans leave with 8 minutes to go. Seeing the odds weren't in their favor at that point. -
