KenPom 2022-2023 KenPom Rankings Thread
Chuck Taylor replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
KenPom is a computer program based on points per possession defense and offense, balanced with strength of schedule. It spits us out at 100. Bart Torvik has us at 121 and SJS at 101. We rank ahead of SJS in a couple of of computer ratings, (Evan Miya, Sagarin) so maybe focus on them instead. . -
That core group of guards has been together a while and finally got it together. Amazing that they lost their bigs in the offseason, Nance to North Carolina and Ryan Young to Duke, and they're playing better.
-
KenPom uses scoring efficiency and defensive efficiency, balanced with strength of opponents. With what OSU has scored vs. what they've given up, they should have a much better record. That's what the "luck" component is, and OSU is 363rd, dead last. They've lost a lot of close games, but their wins have been by big margins generally. I'm not sure I've seen anyone with a profile quite like this before.

Game Day Essentials: Game #26 vs Wisconsin

Nailed it! -
If KT was an NBA prospect, then why did he play only 2, 5 and 6 minutes in the 3 games before Gary got hurt? Fred coached in the NBA, seems like he should have seen the NBA potential.
-
I’ve already said I’m in favor of keeping Fred, based on some improvement and the desire to avoid discord over the firing. However, let’s not overstate what he’s accomplished this year. On January 10, before Gary was injured, NU was 106th on Torvik, 13th in the Big Ten and predicted to finish 13-18.

Gotta haves, portal or otherwise
Chuck Taylor replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Portal question: We're looking for transfers, but if any of our younger players transferred who would take them? A good P5? An average P5? Or a mid to low major? Breidenbach Lawrence Dawson Keita McPherson Oleg -

Ah, those misty watercolor memories .... -
Yes, Rhode Island of the A-10 was the first in December, but couldn't find others. Lot of players have missed, but few cancellations.

uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 15, ed 24: vs Penn State

This. I thought the first half looked like a team that could go .500 down the stretch. -
Say we'd landed Keontae Johnson. What's our ceiling?
Chuck Taylor replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
It's worth pointing out that while Johnson is having a great season, point guard Markquis Nowell is the straw that stirs the drink for KSU. He's No. 13 in Torvik player of the year rankings: https://www.barttorvik.com/poy.php He had a poor shooting game against us, but for the season he's 38% on 3s with 8 assists a game. Really fun to watch him. -
Are We Where We Thought We'd Be? (PBA Edition)

I like it! -
Interesting situation for Texas: Terry has them playing well, but he came to UT this year after a total flop at UTEP. The record of hiring interim coaches who did well isn't a good one. Most recent example I can think of is Wichita State, which has fallen off a cliff under the guy who succeeded Marshall.

Right, it doesn't count if the ball is in the air. It has to be in possession in front court in 10 seconds.

Nebraska (10-12) vs. Illinois (15-6) Game Thread
Chuck Taylor replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I can't remember if I knew Shang Ping was "Shang PIng" when he was playing. Seems like I thought he would still develop into something and didn't realize he was "Shang Ping" until a couple of years later. -
Nebraska wouldn't allow a building to be named after a living person, so a bill had to be pushed through the Legislature to change it. Officially changed to Bob Devaney Sports Center in November 1978.

Duke didn't suck. They played in 3 Final Fours in the '60s and the 1964 title game against UCLA. They also played in the 1978 championship game against Kentucky, but the coach left after the next year and Coach K was hired. He won 17 games and went to the NIT his first year with his predecessor's roster and had 2 losing seasons after that, so yes, he did have a losing record after 3 seasons. However, he also had an unbelievable roster with Johnny Dawkins, Jay Bilas, Mark Alarie and ... Bill Jackman. No wonder he had a long leash. The "Duke stuck with Coach K even though he had a losing record" narrative needs some context.
